'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' shows utter ridiculous thinking around The Patriot Act
NBC ^ | 2-14-05

Posted on 02/14/2005 6:32:01 AM PST by GianniV

If you didn't see the episode last evening, it was the most ridiculous rant about the Patriot Act. Basically, the plot consisted of secretly imprisoned Americans that were then tortured in a Federal prison. Of course, this was blamed on the Patriot Act.

The episode gives no clue as to how and why these people were arrested. It was perhaps the dumbest episode of this lame show that I've ever see.

The libs are really getting desperate (and yes, NBC is very liberal).
And the more desperate they get, the more and more ridiculous and transparent their lunacy becomes.

This show is going from bad to worse. Have they changed writers or producers or something?

I recall reading after the election that the star of this show is such a big Kerry supporter that when Bush won, the actor got physically sick and they had to shut down production for a while.

The story also said his costars related how the star would go nuts over any right-leaning political signs or comments, to such an extent that they feared for his health. They supposedly don't talk to him except while in a scene. There's no love lost apparently.

Interesting that now he seems to be being phased out of the show in favor of Chris Noth.

It seems like Law and Order writers have been given their Marching orders from the left wing of the DNC lately. I stopped watching all of them about 2 years ago.

He asked me to tell him what I thought of the show (he knows my politics). I havent's seen it yet. I Tivo'd it to watch this afternoon.

Law & Order is usually a good show. Thoughtful and provocative. At times it goes off into the deep end. Don't care personally for D'Onofrio's politics but he does play a convincing detective. I've always liked the way the crime's solved on "Criminal Intent." And Dick Wolf has a third spin-off scheduled for later this spring with the subtitle, Trial By Jury.

Denny Crane: "There are two places to find the truth. First God and then Fox News."

I think what we have are liberal producers, directors and writers that are going over the deep end due to losing the election again. It's not just this show, JAG is unwatchable, whereas in the past I have sent them congratulatory Email for a good product. Quite a few other shows have gone over to the dark side.

Excuse me. The story was about prison cards who killed one of their own guards to cover up non-authorized torture. The story was about cold blooded murder and betrayal. It had virtually nothing to do with treatment of "terrorists."

If the internees had in fact been terrorists they would likely have been transferred to Guantanamo. The people who were interned here as far as we saw were Americans who potentially knew someone who knew someone. They were being held as material witnesses, nothing else. Until the last minute of the show there was only one internee shown and that was a happless college student who was an American citizen and had been a Baptist from birth.

Im not against such steps in a time of war but I dont think we should be taking pride in this. These are Americans being held and if past experience is any guide, few of those interned under the Patriot Act are guilty of any crime.

What could you barely believe? That prison guards would torture prisoners or that they would kill one of their own to protect their secret? I dont understand your paranoia about this episode. The guilty party here was not the American government for interning these prisoners, it was the sadistic guards who tortured them for their own amusement and then killed one of their own. It was a murder investigation. The 17 unlisted prisoners were taken from Federal custody so they could testify against the guards.

Gee some people must have such weak beliefs that they fear anything that even questions those beliefs.

Tell the writer that his ending was far too predictable, and highly unbelievable. A standoff where the good guys talk down the bad guys, one by one? I suppose it was okay for a TV show, but really stupid for a drama that is supposed to be serious. I stumbled onto the program by accident, and I am not likely to watch it again.

What do we expect from a show where the lead actor's rectum went into vapor lock and he passed out when Dubya was re-elected.

BTW - just as stupid is the FOX series "24" where a remote control device can take over ALL the nuclear reactors in the USA.

The writers of "24" must have seen Jack Lemmon in "How to Murder Your Wife" with the remote control for the glop-a-duh glop-a-duh machine.

"The guilty party here was not the American government for interning these prisoners"

Sorry, but both stories were present, and the American government was slammed for (allegedly) holding people incommunicado without anyone able to know where they were, without the detainees being on the prison's rolls, and for not supervising the guards well enough to detect torture. The Patriot Act was directly compared to Orwell's 1984.

Please tell him this:

Notwithstanding the general liberal slant of the show, I usually enjoy it. What was missing was nuance. The ranting of the ADA did not work dramatically (for me) because it made him seem simple-minded.

YES, the Patriot Act has its perils. Duh! But there there are perils to meet which the Patriot Act was proposed and passed.

I forget who it was that said the Constitution is not a suicide pact, and there are constitutional provisions for the suspension of habeas corpus. The Founders didn't put that provision in because they were "sexist, racist, anti-gay". They anticipated a need.

It's not a service to the Republic or to political discourse to over-simplify a complex and diificult issue.

Does any one remember lead star D'Onofrio losing it and passing out on the set after the presidential election? The NY Post story is copied here:
http://www.boycottliberalism.com/biographies/Donofrio.htm

Excerpt: "Ever since John Kerry lost the election, [D'Onofrio] has lost his [bleep,]" said our on-set insider.

"He has been getting into fistfights with people, and when he passed out today, we all thought he was faking it. But then he insisted they call 911."

D'Onofrio, a big Kerry supporter, was said to be devastated over President Bush's re-election.

That's known as "The Quincy Syndrome." On the show Quincy (Jack Klugmann) the plot always went something like this: A murder is committed. There are two suspects. The first, a homeless, drug addicted black man who steals food because he can't afford to eat, or the white, CEO of a multi-national Company. Guess who the murderer ALWAYS is!

However, half way through the first episode, the lovely and gracious Mrs. Theknow blurted out "Whoever, the Hell wrote this crap did it in crayon."

Criminal Intent is the weakest of the franchise anyway. The original and SVU are the ones to watch.

Pure fantasy! Whoever wrote this storyline must smoking something. This kind of abuse can only exist if you have a media controlled by the government. In the real world, the Syrian-American kid would be having a press conference by now with ACLU defending him. Where are all the lawyers and media people in the story? People have accused the government with less.

OK, here goes... I was a fan of CI. Last night's episode was extremely heavy-handed. TV shows like this should be character-driven, not agenda-driven. Other TV series broadcast liberal screeds, but they balance it with witty writing and politically diverse characters.

For example, I can put up with the sermons on "Boston Legal", because the dialogue between some of the characters is consistently sharp. In "BL", one of the two main characters is a Republican.

I only started watching the "Law and Order" suite of shows when Fred Thompson joined the cast of the original "L&O". Maybe Dick Wolf would get more viewers by diversifying the characters in all of his shows.

CI has jumped the shark. It's also losing audience to "Desperate Housewives".

P.S. - Your writer friend has no control over this, but I also don't care for Chris Noth, who'll be a series regular.

As drama the show was a failure. No effort is made to explain who the invisible prisoners were, what they were accused of, if anything. The existence of such prisoners was taken for granted when it has never been proven that anyone is really being held incomminicado under the Patiot Act. ( as opposed to being an enemy combatant).

Ask your friend what he knows about the Act itself. L&O has done a few shows about it. all in opposition. One show decried the use of black search warrants, allowing FBI to search a premises without informing the occupants. This was terrible, but no one in the show made reference to how the Feds got all those tapes of John Gotti's conversations in the Ravenite Social Club. The place had been bugged by Feds doing a black bag B&E. 20 years ago the feds bugged the home of Paulie Castellano and listened to his "life" without his knowledge. All the Patriot Act did was allow these techniques to be used against suspected terrorists. And BTW telly your friend that I have it on highest authority, ther Bureau, that the six Muslims picked up in Buffalo were very very bad guys and the public guilty pleas they entered do not even begin to tell the story. Thanks for the chance to rant.

Yes, it 's a dumb ass plot: the boogie man government
and a running line that correction's officers are drunk
with power over the prisoners --- prisoners being held
in "secret" lol. Typically liberal; the bad guys are the victims,
whilst the correction officers are corrupt and brutal.

Actually, it was laughable and regretfully, a waste of one hour's precious time.
