Endangered Status Sought for Polar Bears
LA Times ^ | 2/17/05 | Miguel Bustillo

Posted on 02/17/2005 10:59:20 AM PST by NormsRevenge

The polar bear, an icon of the great white north, is in peril, its icy home melting beneath its paws, an environmental group argued Wednesday in formally petitioning the Bush administration to grant the animals protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The Center for Biological Diversity, which made the plea on the day the Kyoto Protocol to address global warming went into effect without the United States, said it did not believe the Bush administration would agree with its 154-page argument.

But by drawing attention to the condition of polar bears, it hoped to expand public awareness of the potentially calamitous consequences of climate change, which include rising sea levels because of melting ice caps and changing weather patterns around the globe. If the plea to list the bears as threatened under the act is rejected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the group vows, it will take its case to court.

--snip--

"The potential listing of the polar bear as an endangered species because of the effects of global warming should set off alarm bells around the world," said Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), who with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has reintroduced legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Rep. Richard W. Pombo (R-Tracy), chairman of the House Resources Committee and a leading proponent of drilling in ANWR as well as rewriting the Endangered Species Act, demurred.

"Given the rising number of polar bears in the Arctic, this appears to be a public relations and fundraising stunt," Pombo said. "There is certainly no credible reason to list them under the ESA."

I know this thread is about polar bears---but since it was brought up in the article, I want to mention what I heard on Rush yesterday, that floored me--

Already, the RINOs in congress are disgracing the Rep. party re: ANWAR---I heard that the proposal to start drilling in ANWR, which I believe that Bush campaigned on, has ALREADY been taken out of the Energy Bill because the dems have told the Reps that they won't pass the Energy bill if ANWR drilling is part of it---

In other words, the REPS are wimping out again and they haven't even gone to the public as far as I know, because I hadn't heard anyone mention it until yesterday---

I know this is off subject of thread, but I didn't know what thread to bring this up---

If their habitat is shrinking due to warming, which I doubt, then the vest thing we could do for them is to have an open season to reduce their population to match their new territory.

And Sawyer knows how to treat those white woolies...

News Headline, AD 2029: Greenpeace activists, dressed up as Great White Tropical Bears, demonstrated to have the tropical animals placed on the endangered list as their habitat cools beneath their paws, even as governments from Indonesia to Brazil are contemplating open hunting season on the ubiquitous pests due to loss of livestock and pets.

The polar bear, an icon of the great white north, is in peril, its icy home melting beneath its paws,...

Bullcrap! If there were less ice "White Bear" would not have to travel as far to get a decent meal in winter.

Oh to be the inventor that could actually harness all of that hot air and actually be able to use it for something!

There was a 1973 pact made by a few countries that limited the hunting of the polar bears... That info is in a chunk of the article I can't post.

They have informally had some protections in place for years. populations are on the increase, but is that gonna stop the GReenoids from milking it for money, most of which will be used for political activists causes and very little used to actually help polar bears or combat 'global warming"..

It's definitely NOT a PR stunt.

That want President Bush to ban global warming.

Leiberman and McCstain are helping them push the wealth redistribution scheme that is Kyoto. Lieberman is a moron for having ASSumed polar bears are endangered and I'm going to throw that in his excommunicated face every chance I get.

Well, if they keep this up, I'd say they're endangered.

We need to invite all the activists to a nice discussion and be reasonable, agreeing to all their demands. Then offer them a nice sumptuous dinner of fried polar bear liver and onions before sending them home.
