The Simpsons has come out of the closet, addressing the controversial issue of same-sex marriage whilst embracing Marges chain-smoking sister Patty as a lesbian.
Springfield may never be the same again, and the revelation has thrilled gay rights activists.
In an episode entitled Theres Something About Marrying, screened in the US last night, Homer Simpson became a minister on the internet and conducted dozens of same-sex weddings, charging £105 (200 dollars) a pop.
This prompted longtime character Patty Bouvier to explain how she fell for professional golfer Veronica.
But love was not to be. Veronica turned out to be a man, betrayed by a protruding Adams apple and unmasked at the altar.
The heavily promoted episode had attracted widespread publicity with bookmakers taking bets on which character would be revealed as homosexual, and whether there would be a kiss.
The episode, which was preceded by a parental advisory warning, was hailed a ray of light by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
But L Brent Bozell, president of the Parents Television Council, criticised the show for addressing the issue of gay marriage, though warning he had not yet seen the episode.
At a time when the public mood is overwhelmingly against gay marriage, any show that promotes gay marriage is deliberately bucking the public mood, he told the New York Times.
Id rather them not do it at all. Youve got a show watched by millions of children. Do children need to have gay marriage thrust in their faces as an issue ? Why cant we just entertain them?
The Simpsons is no stranger to controversial topics. Another character, Smithers, is gay whilst the show features one of the few born-again Christian characters on television Ned Flanders, Homers neighbour.
This makes The Simpsons the only thing embraced both by Gay Activist Groups and various Christian Groups who admire Ned Flanders and the show's overall morality.
Patty is a lesbian?
Next thing you're gonna do is tell me Smithers is gay!
Beyond disgusting. Freaks, Incorporated.
And neither character reflects well on their own group.
The ONLY place I have seen this show mentioned is here on FR. Nobody seems to care about this show, they must have the best PR service because nobody other than the Mediots is paying attention.
The general reaction seems to be more in the line of "more hollyweird homo propaganda" click, off goes the TV.
ping
I thought the sisters had the hots for MacGyver.
The Simpsons has been on since 1989 and is closing on the all time record for years on the air (Gunsmoke at 20). It's always been extremely popular and the most conservative show on Network TV.
It was a pretty funny episode.
Not as funny as all the crazy furor.
L0L I saw the episode in question.
There where plenty of anti gay remarks in the show as well
If you want on/off the ping list see my profile page.
Matt Groening, the creator, is a very far left guy, as you can tell if you look at some of his other work. However, he is an equal opportunity mocker -- and in fact probably mocks leftist standards more than conservative ones. He is a brilliant satirist, and we should be willing to cut him some slack.
yawn
If 3% of the population was into bigamy or incest, would the rest of America be expected to sit through these little propaganda pieces?
