TYLER, Texas (AP) -- A man angry about being sued for unpaid child support opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle outside a courthouse, killing his ex-wife and a man trying to help the couple's adult son.

The gunman, 43-year-old David Hernandez Arroyo Sr., was killed Thursday afternoon in a gun battle with officers a few miles away after wounding his son and three law enforcement officers, one critically.

The son had been acting as a mediator between his parents, police said. Police estimated that Arroyo, who had a history of spousal abuse and weapons violations, shot 50 rounds in the historic town square. He was wearing a military flak jacket and a bulletproof vest. "He definitely came well-armed and prepared," police Chief Gary Swindle said. "We do understand there had been some threats made by him the previous week."

But the attorney representing Maribel Estrada, 41, said he doesn't believe she thought her ex-husband was dangerous. Estrada worked at a meat packing plant in Tyler and raised a 17-year-old and a 6-year-old with the help of her eldest son, Joshua Wintters said.

The other victim, Mark Alan Wilson, 52, was credited by authorities with saving the life of David Hernandez Arroyo Jr., who was listed in fair condition at a hospital with leg wounds. A sheriff's deputy, Sherman Dollison, 28, was in critical condition after being shot in the liver, lungs and legs; a sheriff's lieutenant and a Tyler police detective were treated and released.

"One of the deputies at the scene said if it hadn't been for Mr. Wilson," said Sheriff J.B. Smith, "the son would be dead."

"Wilson was credited with saving the son's life."...

an 'evil' gun-toting permit holder dies in the aid of a stranger. when's the last time one of the million mommies risked their life helping someone?

Wilson deserves a posthumous award.

Wilson deserves a posthumous award.

Yes, he does, but don't be surprised when the cops issue their "folks, don't do what this guy did--leave it to the 'experts'" pronouncement.

I can't wait to read the VPC's analysis of all this.

the nature of the horrendous crime is clear.

now, does anyone have the fortitude to examine an out of control child support collection system that would drive a person to things up to and including murder?

before you flame, be sure you know what it's like to be dragged into that machinery.

No lie there. That 44 minute shoot out in LA could have been solved in under 3 minutes by ANY hunter who would've sniped those two turds LONG before they had the time to shoot up the town. Body armor might be nice but NO ONE survives a scoped head shot.

I hope that the State awards the CCW holder a medal of valor. He rates it.

Dial 911, don't resist, take no action on your own. Remain calm while the perp shoots you, many times.

I can understand your point. I wonder how some people live who have such high child support payments.

From the AP (via FOX News):

Wilson, a gun enthusiast who once owned a shooting range, intervened after Arroyo killed his ex-wife, witnesses said. Swindle, the police chief, said Wilson shot at Arroyo several times but his rounds weren't penetrating the armor.

"They traded shots, missing each other, and then the gunman hit Wilson and Wilson went down," Tyler Morning Telegraph publisher Nelson Clyde III said in Friday's editions of the newspaper. Clyde watched the shooting from a nearby restaurant.

"The gunman walked up to Wilson and shot him while he was on the ground," Clyde said. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was sickening."

Never bring a pistol to a rifle fight.

Doesn't say what Wilson was carrying but it might not have mattered given the murderer wearing a bullet-proof vest.

The only handgun ammunition I have heard of that can penetrate a bullet-proof vest (Kevlar only) are the teflon-coated "cop-killer" bullets.

I know what it's like. Been on both sides of that coin.
I'm now on the side of the coin that has to deal with the fact the system does absolutley nothing to punish the deadbeat mom.

Sorry. Can't go there. Your argument sounds too much like the excuses for 911. 'sure its bad BUT imagine how arabs must feel because . . . '

I'm happy to indict the whole system of persecution of men by the divorce system in this country. But it does not serve as even a tiny excuse or explanation for strapping on your flak jacket, racking the Mossberg, and killing the ex.

"opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle outside a courthouse,"

Bull puckey. It may have been a semiautomatic AK-47 STYLED assault rifle, but that is it. More intentional blurring of the lines between semi and full auto (machine guns) by the MSM.

This makes a very strong case for the FN 5.7 handgun, which can penetrate body armor and holds 20 rounds.

I would suggest buying one before the gun grabbers outlaw it (they're trying).

Not entirely true. If Wilson was carrying a .38, a .380, or even a 9 mm, there's a good chance that his rounds wouldn't penetrate a Kevlar vest. When you start moving to the magnum ranges, the chances of penetration of a vest increase, and that much lead at that velocity has the ability to knock someone over and do soft tissue damage even without vest penetration. I have no information on this, but my guess was that Wilson was carrying "small" for concealability rather than power. In most situations that's going to be enough, and it's difficult to conceal a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum with a long barrel.

God bless Wilson and what he did for a stranger.

One, the CCW permit holder deserves a medal for valor.

Two, amazed that there has been no 'leave it to the professionals' message

Three, some men won't take being made into slaves lying down. I wonder if that explains the "get a restraining order, get disarmed by the cops" actions in divorces?

SS196 is the AP version of the ammo, and that IS banned already.

A friend lost two homes and a business due to out-of-control
child-support and alimony payments. The woman TOOK both homes, now worth well over $350K EACH and got all the money from the business for 2 kids that were 14 and 15.
She outright said she wouldnt marry or go to work so he would be made to pay her alimony for the rest of her life.

I personally know 2 women whose ex-husbands outright said they would not go to work so they would not have to pay the ex-wives. I don't believe the ex-wives have shot them, their children, and any bystanders yet. They probably don't realize how much sympathy is out there waiting for them.

A couple of important lessons in this.

#1 Mozambique or El Presidente drills, 2 to the body, 1 to the head.

#2 Shoot the threat until the threat stops being one.

Folks, please keep the Texas CHL holder and his family in our prayers. He was doing his best to stop the bad guy and protect the innocent. He was the very definition of a Sheep Dog.
