Ban of .50-cal. rifles sought in Illinois
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | February 25, 2005 | FRANK MAIN AND ART GOLAB

Anti-gun lawmakers are seeking a ban on .50-caliber "sniper rifles," saying they're favored by terrorists and can shoot down aircraft from a range of more than 2,000 yards -- though they don't appear to be tied to any crimes here in the last decade, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis shows.

A spokesman for the National Rifle Association, which is pushing dozens of its own bills in the General Assembly, vowed to fight the sniper-rifle legislation backed by Representatives Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) and Beth Coulson (R-Glenview).

"There isn't a single person in the United States that I know of who has been killed by one of these firearms," said Todd Vandermyde, an NRA lobbyist in Springfield.

Vandermyde pointed out that the 1968 federal Gun Control Act allowed civilians to own guns in which the diameter of the barrel's bore -- its caliber -- is up to .50 of an inch. Most .50-caliber weapons in the United States are single-bolt action rifles used for recreational target shooting, he said.

Muzzle loaders exempt

Thom Mannard of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence said the proposed legislation would exempt muzzle loaders and other such recreational guns with far less firepower than sniper rifles made by companies like ArmaLite in Downstate Geneseo.

"It is simply hard to imagine how anyone could be against preventing .50-caliber sniper rifles from falling into the wrong hands," Mannard said.

Legislators in Springfield and Washington -- including Gov. Blagojevich when he was in Congress -- have previously failed to ban .50-caliber sniper rifles. They argue the rifles are designed to attack landing aircraft, fuel tanks and carry out assassinations.

Or, EVER!

Let's just ban everything that has, or may injure someone, now or in the future?

We should also ban gravity....if it saves just ONE child from falling down.

LOL!

Yeah, Chicago, that GUN BAN is really working to keep that murder rate down.

Why use a .50 cal sniper when if you REALLY want to whack someone, put a sound suppresor on a 30.06 and be a little more quiet about it.

Stupid liberals. They're too damn dumb to learn.

"I rather have a 8.58x71mm Laupa Magnum any way."

The Lapua is good, no doubt about it. Of course, if these gun-grabbers can work their magic on the .50bmg, what makes you think that your preferred caliber won't be on the chopping block in the coming months?

"They argue the rifles are designed to attack landing aircraft, fuel tanks and carry out assassinations."

According to who?

There isn't a shred of evidence to support this claim.

Just the 'lets make it up as we go' antigun crowd inane ramblings.

How do people get away with such blatant lies?

?Actually this is a back door method to ban shot guns above .410, the boys of daley's mob want not one to have a weapon.

Can't have them shooting back at the mob members.

As much as I loved my home state I had to leave. My property taxes were 14k per year and I have a but load of guns. Taxes and firearms are two big issues I have.

Wonder when they'll get those single shot street sweeper shotguns off the streets? Commonly used across the nation to mow down harmless bunnies, they are also capable of cutting down crowds of people in one shot. They can also be fired from the hip and reloaded quickly by an amateur gunman, according to the Brady Campaign. Authorities say these so-called "hunting weapons" could potentially be used in violent crimes, even capable of piercing police body armor with a high-power cop killer round called a slug. Located in many homes across America, Brady says this is a disaster waiting to happen. "We must put an end to the sales and manufacture of these deadly cop-killer assault shotguns. Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in!"

This is so silly. You should see what I can do with a M1903-A1/Unertl 8x Springfield using M72 Match ammo. That's .30-06 caliber for you non-firearm folks out there.

The only thing these proposed .50 caliber bans have accomplished is to create a blossoming market for these firearms.
I can remember a time before these fools started whining about all these long-distance-aircraft-killing-preferred-weapon-of-choice-for-terrorist-rifles. There were less than a handful of manufacturers producing them. Ammo was either inaccurate surplus military machine gun ammo or painstakingly made handloads. Now there are dozens of companies producing them in all sorts of configurations and there's a broad range of quality ammunition available.

Even though I have absolutely no use for one, I'd love to get a Barrett M-82A1 with all the trimmings. If for no other reason than to give these clowns a good case of heartburn.

Illinois lawmakers always have good sounding reasons to ban specific weapons. The problem is that they are methodically going through their list, one weapon at a time, in an effort to effectively ban all guns in the state.

"It is simply hard to imagine how anyone could be against preventing .50-caliber sniper rifles from falling into the wrong hands," Mannard said.

Or box cutters, or lawn fertilizer, or gasoline, or pesticides, or airplanes, or high voltage electricity, or battery acid, or spray paint, etc., etc. The list of objects and chemicals that could be misused is huge. We need to ban it all and put the UN in charge of enforcement.

What's really unfair is that southern Illinois is mostly sane, and we have people in a city 300 miles away making our gun laws for us.
