MATAMOROS, MEXICO -- The chief officer of the American Consulate in the border city of Matamoros says he is concerned about the Central American Mara Salvatrucha gang helping al-Qaeda.

"The Maras are certainly a threat to the United States," Naland said. "The concern is that they might be just the kind of group which would take money to smuggle an honest-to-goodness terrorist into the United States.

"MS-13/Al-Qaeda Connection"
Monday, February 28, 2005   Updated:11:30:42 PM CST

"NEWSCHANNEL 5 has uncovered that the infamous Mara Salvatrucha Gang may have ties to Al Qaeda."

MATAMOROS, MEXICO --

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Consul John Naland made his remarks following the arrest Feb. 24 of an MS-13 gang member in Matamoros trying to smuggle three illegal aliens into the United States. The arrest comes on the heels of the American government acknowledging last week it was holding Ebner Anibal Rivera-Paz - the reputed head of the Honduran Mara Salvatrucha organization - after his arrest in Falfurrias, Texas on Feb. 10.

"The Maras are certainly a threat to the United States," Naland said. "The concern is that they might be just the kind of group which would take money to smuggle an honest-to-goodness terrorist into the United States.

"There has been some intelligence that al-Qaeda has talked with the Maras to help smuggle someone in to the U.S.," Naland added. "It's kind of the logical open door that could be used and the Maras are just ruthless enough to do it."

Gang experts in Matamoros say the Mara Salvatrucha are a "transit-gang" in the area, only interested in transporting drugs and people for profit."

This article does not even begin to describe to extent of MS13. Mara Salvatrucha, the MS-13 gang, a network of Marxist paramilitary guerillas from El Salvador, is one of the most dangerous Latino gangs in the United States. It is unique among gangs within the US in that it maintains active ties with members and factions in El Salvador. More than one million people fled from El Salvador civil war in the 80s and 90s. The Salvadorian refugees and immigrants initially settled California and Washington, D.C.. Some had ties with La Mara, a violent street gang from El Salvador. Others had been members of the Marxist paramilitary group Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMNL) during the war. FMNL was made up of Salvadorian peasants who were trained as Marxist guerilla fighters. Many were adept at using explosives, firearms, and booby traps. Most settled in the established Hispanic neighborhoods of the "Rampart" area of Los Angeles. In the late 1980s, members of La Mara and FMNL formed what is now known as the Mara Salvatrucha (MS) street gang in Los Angeles. MS quickly developed a reputation for being organized and extremely violent. MS membership continues to be fed by refugees from groups like FMNL. Further reading:

OCTOBER 31, 2004 : (REPORT: SHUKRIJUMAH HAS HOOKED UP WITH SALVADORAN GROUP MS-13 aka MARA SALVATRUCHA - POSSIBLY RELATED TO BIN LADEN THREAT TAPE?) Many believe that the ringleader of any possible attack is Adnan Shukriagumah, a 28-year-old Saudi-born Guyanese man who grew up in South Florida. A $5 million reward has been offered for Shukriagumah, who has bomb- making skills, is trained to fly commercial jets and has been linked to Sept. 11 ringleader, Mohamed Atta. Intelligence reports say Shukriagumah has hooked up with the El Salvadorian street gang, MS-13, which is known to be very adept at smuggling drugs and people into the United States. Why don't these news-traitors just broadcast the address and phone number for MS-13 in Mexico? I don't believe that MS-13 (or the Federales, Rurales and Locales they bribe to stay in business) are stupid enough to bring in any Al-Qaeda types into the US. Disclosure of their involvement would not only result in the kind of border backlash a Michael Savage would love, but it would effectively seal MS-13's fate. They may be audacious risk takers, but even a coke-fueled maniac would avoid that kind of trouble.

Problem is that they don't care what it is as long as they get paid.

Second, they're not a Mexican gang. They don't like Mexicans, and Mexicans don't like them.

These guys are based out of Central America, but they do recruit other races in America.

Problem is that they don't care what it is as long as they get paid. Second, they're not a Mexican gang. They don't like Mexicans, and Mexicans don't like them. My point was that if you get yourself added to the list of terrorist groups attacking America, you may get "paid", but you'll also get "daid", and I don't think that even MS-13 is dumb enough to bring that kind of heat on themselves. I know that MS-13 is Central American, not Mexican, but if they're operating in Mexico, somebody at some level of Mexican law enforcement is getting their "mordida", their bite, from MS-13. Remember the Mexican Government, and the Mexican police are not bound by Constitutional niceties. If they want MS-13 gone, they'll be gone. Someone is protecting them, and that protector will act as an advisor and a restraint on MS-13. In fact if I were Mr Shukrijumah, I'd watch my back around MS-13, they might be able to profit by taking his money and then "flipping" and turning him over to the Mexicans and/or to the US.

Roger. Just remember what happened when we closed the Mexican border after the torture and killing of Kiki Camarena. The "real killers" were found and turned over in a record time that would have made the FBI, Scotland Yard and the Surete look like amateurs by comparison (assuming, of course that the Federales didn't already know where to look). When I hear reports of MS-13 types terrorizing entire Mexican communities, I can only assume that law enforcement in the Third World country next door is either intimidated, or bought off, or both.
