Poll: Santos leads Vinick to succeed President Bartlet

March 2, 2005, 11:51 AM EST

UTICA, N.Y. --

Forget Clinton vs. McCain. In the race to occupy "The West Wing," Matt Santos is a lock to beat Arnie Vinick.

Pollster John Zogby, who often asks Americans who they think will be elected the real president, wasn't interested in Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton's chances against Republican John McCain in 2008. He had other candidates in mind _ those running to replace Democratic incumbent Josiah Bartlet on NBC-TV's "The West Wing."

The Zogby International poll found Democratic Rep. Matthew Santos of Texas (played by Jimmy Smits) leading Republican Sen. Arnold Vinick of California (played by Alan Alda), 44 percent to 28 percent, among West Wing viewers contacted by computer for the interactive poll.

Vinick, it seems, has a gender gap problem.

"While he and Santos are tied among men, each getting 35 percent of the vote, Santos holds a commanding lead among women, where he outpolls Vinick by 53 percent to 22 percent," Zogby said.

There is a serious side to the poll, Zogby said.

"There are three nerve centers in this country. There's New York, which is money; Washington, which is power; and Hollywood, which is culture," he said. "We already do New York and Washington."

Zogby went so far as to prescribe a MOE of +/- 0.7% to his poll.

This is either the funniest thing or the most pathetic thing I've seen so far in '05......I still haven't decided.

Could it be both?

I saw a biography program on Alan Alda and they said he would be in ten episodes of the West Wing. I assume that means he will not win. Are my methods as good as Zogby?

Santos has to win. The series is not going to guarantee its own death by putting a Republican in the Oval, thus guaranteeing the ENTIRE current cast would be cashiered.

Is this a poll of people who are registered to vote in The West Wing's election, or does it only include those who are likely to vote in it?

I guess since Democrats are effectively powerless in D.C., they have to content themselves with erecting an alternate reality where there's a Democrat in the White House. Good for them; maybe while they're playing President Barbie, the adults can get some work done.

I will be absolutely shocked if Santos the democrat wins--NOT.

These Hollywood types love to pride themselves on their imagination and open-mindedness, but it's they're awfully small-minded when it comes to politics.

I'd vote for Curly over Alan Alda.

What ratings is this show getting? Is anyone, other than a few groupies, watching?

"There are three nerve centers in this country. There's New York, which is money; Washington, which is power; and Hollywood, which is culture"

This must be the view that caused Zogby to give Kerry over 300 electoral votes last election. If your view of mainstream America is New York City, Washington D.C., and Hollywood, you're bound to expect any Democrat to win by a landslide - especially if you see America's cultural identity as being defined by Hollywood.
