A Newark man charged with stabbing to death a 15-year-old lesbian in one of the state's first bias murder cases pleaded guilty yesterday to aggravated manslaughter in a deal that could net him as little as 20 years in prison.
Richard McCullough, who also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and bias intimidation, appeared reluctant to admit guilt in the May 2003 killing. At one point, he said the victim, Sakia Gunn, died after running into his knife.

"At one point, he said the victim, Sakia Gunn, died after running into his knife."
Yeah...that's the ticket...she ran into my knife...uh...that was right after she hit my fist with her chin...yeah...
An OJ jury might have bought that one.
I wonder when such stories will stop invoking the memory of Matthew Shepherd and finally admit that he was nothing more than an unfortunate burglary victim.
No. He pleaded guilty to "aggravated manslaughter," not murder. Without reading the rest of the story, I'll have to guess the prosecution decided it didn't have enough evidence to ensure a murder conviction.
No, 20 years for aggravated manslaughter of a 15 year old.
It was the Prosecutor's decision to take the plea deal. (And if the people there don't like it, they can elect a new one.) Judicial resources are scarce, and plea deals are a very common way to deal with the load.
Too bad it wasn't in Florida then this PoS would get what he deserves or Texas.
Including parole.
Dang! Will I never be the first to post?!? =^)
I note they use the term "man" rather loosely here.
This escalated from the "man" driving by in a car, asking the girls if they wanted to go party, him getting out of the car, approaching the victim, exchanging words and stabbing her to death.
Fry the son of a bitch. At thirty years of age, this "man" should have known better. A 15 year old is dead. He does nto deserve to live.
It seems to me that the essential point is that a man murdered a 15-year-old girl, which is a terrible crime, not that she was a lesbian. I don't see why it makes any difference if he stabbed her because he hates lesbians or stabbed her because he hates blondes, or for any other pathological reason he might come up with.
Murder is murder, and bringing all this Marxist victimology into our laws is not helpful to the cause of justice.
Headline: TEEN DIRKS DYKE GUNN
Whoops. Make that TEEN DYKE GUNN DIRKED.
"Matthew Shepherd and finally admit that he was nothing more than an unfortunate burglary victim"
That would be "robbery" not burglery.
Burglers are just simple thieves who go after property, and typically break into a home--with no human around. Robbers assault a person for their property, usually violently.
That's why the phrase is "cat burgler" not "cat robber"
Otherwise, I agree with you. Its high time homosexuals be treated not as a 3rd (or 4th, 5th 6th...) sex, but rather as either men or women with a problem of perversion, not victims of an imagined persecution.
Some other unsavory persons may treat them badly...but we have laws already against that--and have no need for "thought crime" add-ons, lest they become stand alone "crimes," actually used to persecute people of traditional principle.
the local newspapers first reported this as the killing of a fifteen yearold after she declined a man's invitation. Something like three paragraphs, second section.
I thought if this had been a white suburban girl instead of a girl from Newark - the murder would have been front page for days.
After the papers discovered that she declined his invitation saying that she was a lesbian, she moved up in the world, or at least in the Star-Ledger.
Why this s.o.b. was allowed to plead to aggravated manslaughter I do not know.
As for hate crimes, he likely would have killed her just the same if she had said "you're too old for me" or "My mama raised me right." instead of "I'm a lesbian."
