NY Times: Iraq Had WMD 'Stockpiles' in 2003

In a stunning about-face, the New York Times reported Sunday that when the U.S. attacked Iraq in March 2003, Saddam Hussein possessed "stockpiles of monitored chemicals and materials," as well as sophisticated equipment to manufacture nuclear and biological weapons, which was removed to "a neighboring state" before the U.S. could secure the weapons sites.

The U.N.'s Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission [Unmovic], "has filed regular reports to the Security Council since last May," the paper said, "about the dismantlement of important weapons installations and "the export of dangerous materials to foreign states."

"Officials of the commission and the [International] Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly called on the Iraqi government to report on what it knows of the fate of the thousands of pieces of monitored equipment and stockpiles of monitored chemicals and materials."

Last fall, IAEA director Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei confirmed that "nuclear-related materials" had gone missing from monitored sites, calling on the interim Iraqi government to start the process of accounting for the missing stockpiles still ostensibly under the agency's supervision.

I didn't say it wasn't.  And I did, so please don't tell me what I should bother to read.  I asked a question, if you don't want to answer it ... don't ... easiest thing you'll do all day.

The Times would spin this story differently.

The Times IS spinning this story differently.

Their story is not about the facts presented by News Max, namely that there WERE WMD, banned materials, a well funded and equipped nuclear program, stockpiles of chemicals, etc.

No. The Times story is about the FAILURE of the BUSH ADMINISTRATION to secure these items (which the Times has been insisting were never there).

This isn't proof that WMDs were present and the Times was wrong. Oh no. That's old news. They've moved on from that. This is proof that the war was run incompetently.

If AlGore or J F'n Kerry or the oh so perfect Kofi were in charge they would have found the WMD and secured them.

It's all Bush's fault!

The Newsmax.com article doesn't give the link from the NYT, but I believe that this is it: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/13/international/middleeast/13loot.html?hp&ex=1110776400&en=e7534dd977e6dc08&ei=5094&partner=homepage.

"The threat posed by these types of facilities was cited by the Bush administration as a reason for invading Iraq, but the installations were left largely unguarded by allied forces in the chaotic months after the invasion. "

Yeah, that's the key statement as far as the Slimes intent. Nevertheless, it still is an admittance of WMD though it's source is only the one Iraqi official, Sami al-Araji, deputy minister of industry.

Yes, the article does go into an anti-Bush rant (again) but what is the one thing that people read?  The headline and most won't bother to read the rest ... especially those who hate Bush and it looks like it praises him or in any way makes him look good.

it still is an admittance of WMD

Exactly, it kills the "bush lied ... people died" chant that's been going on since the beginning.

No. The Times story is about the FAILURE of the BUSH ADMINISTRATION to secure these items (which the Times has been insisting were never there).

The Times has never insisted that UN-monitored WMD-related (NOT actual "WMDs") facilities and equipment were never there.

The fundamental cause of confusion in a billion "WMD" threads has been this issue of stuff Iraq was actually ALLOWED to have.

A lot of "Dual use" stuff; chemical equipment used to make regular industrial chemicals, but COULD be used to make WMDs; also, a lot of equipment at their nuclear facility, wasn't destroyed, but sealed and monitored by the IAEA.

Iraq was never required to destroy them; instead, they were regularly inspected by the UN.

That this stuff existed isn't breaking news, and there are zillions of articles from before GW II describing them in detail.

None of these materials potentially violated UN sanctions and were openly declared and acknowledged by the Iraqis.

One problem with the NYT article is that it assumes the reader, to a degree, is aware of the above. However, many people on FR, and, apparently, Newsmax, is not.

Also people seem to be confusing "looted after Baghdad fell" with "Shipped out of Iraq before the war by Saddam."

The election is over, let the truth leak out now that nobody seems to care anymore. Sooner or later the sheeple would find out the truth... 50 years from now the record will show that the NY Times did report it. Ho hum.

Change the story. Bush let the WMDs get away!

Remember how...

HILLARY RODHAM
BILL CLINTON
JOHN KERRY
TED KENNEDY

...kept telling us to deal with North Korea first, not Iraq, and to go-go-go to the UN for Invasion approval, adding several months for SADDAM to get his bad stuff out of country?

The Enemy is now Within...
and always has been.

"Bush let tons of explosives get away"

Yes, but no one seemed to care, it just sort of laid there and died a meaningless death.

The "dis-information" of the press will slowly fall apart ... we are talking baby steps here, the admittance of Iraqi WMD is only the first step ... more will follow.
