Terri's husband isn't the enemy, guardian says
Orlando Sentinel ^ | February 25, 2005 | Mike Thomas

Wolfson's report is based on court files, depositions, medical records and interviews with everyone involved.

That said, I begin with the most explosive allegation:

Did Michael try to kill Terri?

Wolfson laughs. "No!"

-----

Wolfson's report states that in the four years after her collapse, Michael "had insistently held to the premise that Theresa could recover and the evidence is incontrovertible that he gave his heart and soul to her treatment and care . . . In late autumn of 1990, following months of therapy and testing and formal diagnoses of persistent vegetative state with no evidence of improvement, Michael took Theresa to California, where she received an experimental thalamic stimulator implant in her brain. Michael remained in California caring for Theresa during a period of several months."

Says Wolfson now: "Michael was adoring of her. One nursing home complained he was hostile and abusive of the staff in championing her care. She was immaculately kept. In 13 years, she never had one bedsore."

He wanted to fulfill her wishes, and I do believe there was a personal vendetta between Michael and the parents. There are two sides to every story and I don't believe the Schindlers motives are as pure as the driven snow either.

You're extremely confused. Karen Ann Quinlan was on a respirator.

The respirator was removed, and she lived for nine years more.

Her food and water were never removed.

I believe in Quinlan's case, the family eventually fought to have her removed from the respirator and prevailed. However, the feeding tube remained, and she didn't die for several more years.

well you do bring up a point, sometimes doctors are very wrong, but then again presumably you never expressed your wishes to your parents beforehand and presumably it didn't take 15 years to prove the doctors wrong

Wonderful response and most of that I found on Terri's own website.

It's been stated she did not have a CAT scan. That's patently untrue.

That is not the issue.

Unfortunately, a CAT scan is of limited use in diagnosing PVS.

Why did Michael never permit a PET scan?

Why did he never permit an MRI?

She has never had either. Not once.

I find that baffling.

My understanding is that the Schindlers have had at least two court appointed doctors at various times.

OK. Then please provide the names of those two doctors.

Had an MRI been recommended, I would be surprised if they would not authorize it.

I read that Terri still has the metal probes that were used during the experimental treatment in California, implanted in her skull. Other posters explained that if she cannot have an MRI unless those are removed.

Another 'convenience' for Michael and the Judge and Felos.

They have had 5 years that they could have had those probes removed (assuming removing them would not cause further damage, and I have no info the veracity of that either way).

So, we have the MEDIA and DOCTORS, JUDGE,FELOS stating TERRI has had a recent, new and improved MRI, and we have those same set of doctors stating Terri can't have an MRI because she has metal probes in her skull.

That should tell you something, my dear.

There is absolutely NO constitutional reason for the House today; whatever they pass, the USSC will strike it down.

I believe I heard that President Bush asked Congress to stick around the weekend to act on this. Do you disagree with President Bush?

I stand corrected on the facts, my apologies, perhaps I am mixing up my facts with another less high profile case, which is why I qualified with to the best of my recollection which ain't what it used to be, but then that was not euthanasia either

Wow...this article was posted back in February and only 11 responses. To me, this is the most important and credible articles thus far.

That surprised me too, that a three week old article could go overlooked. I'm guessing that it was previously posted here but got deleted, possibly because of a flame war. Fortunately, we're not having one today. :)

I hear a lot of anecdotes and rumors to the contrary, but all the proof is on his side.

All Michael has on the wish to die issue is PARTIALLY SUPPORTED HEARSAY,contaminated by previous court testimony of Michael's that he wanted to take care of Terri the rest of her life, no matter how long she lived, and he was awarded the money partially because of that testimony.

He said not one word about TERRI's WISHES during the LAWSUIT.

SO, which time was he lying?

Maybe, just maybe, he realized, because unlike any of you, he sees her everyday, she's not going to recover. It's then, after exhausting all the avenues, that he decides to let her go. Well, that just makes too much sense for some of you.

Michael Schiavo testimony from medical-malpractice testimony:

"I believe in the vows I took with my wife: through sickness and health, for richer or poor. I married my wife because I love her and I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I'm going to do that."
[“In Sickness”: The unfettered right to love, honor, and pull the plug. -- November 13, 2003 National Review Online]

Yeah, makes too much sense for me. /sarcasm

Without stating my opinion about this matter, what is unfortunate to see is how many opinions are being offered by people who haven't paid attention to some of the nitty gritty facts.

I've seen freepers espouse that Michael is after the insurance money. And yet according to court papers, Michael formally offered to divest himself entirely of his financial interests in the guardianship estate.

Er, Michael ONLY offered to do so if the Schlinders agreed to kill Terri, and that offer was only on the "table" a short while. Read up.

Freepers have said that Terri has not been seen by a neurologist. That's patently untrue.

No one ever said that. They said the neurologists spent little time with her, which IS true.

It's been stated she did not have a CAT scan. That's patently untrue.

Er, once again they said she has NOT had an MRI NOR A PET SCAN (not a Cat Scan).

It's been stated that Michael refused to let a priest visit her. That's patently untrue. Some of them have given interviews after their visit with Terri and just yesterday she was given last rites.

Er, Michael refused to allow a priest to give Terri the last rites THE LAST TIME HAD HAD HER STARVED. He allowed it afterwards and this time. So once again, you are wrong.

Terri's sister stated on CNN last night that they don't even know if Terri had a heart attack. Court documentation by numerous doctors provides evidence that Terri did have a heart attack. Her sister denied that Terri had bulimia but that is the very basis under which Michael won a malpractice suit.

That is because Terri was NEVER diagnosed with bulimia and NO ONE that ever knew her INCLUDING her husband knew she had this supposed "bulimia" - odd, wouldn't you say? It was based on her Potassium falling to 2 (mine has fallen to 1 before and I don't have Bullimia).
If the doctors held out to appeal they would have won.

Some freepers have said that only Michael was told about Terri's comments that she never wanted to be kept alive with machines and tubes. Yet court testimony indicates her best friend, Joan, also heard Terri say that.

Only Michael and his brother and sister in law testified that Terri said that.

Court testimony provided by members of the Schindler family included very personal statements about their desire and intention to ensure that Theresa remain alive . . . at any and all costs. Nearly gruesome examples were given, eliciting agreement by family members that in the event Theresa should contract diabetes and subsequent gangrene in each of her limbs, they would agree to amputate each limb and would then, were she to be diagnosed with heart disease, perform open-heart surgery. Within the testimony, as part of the hypothetical presented, Schindler family members stated that even if Theresa had told them of her intention to have artificial nutrition withdrawn, they would not do it.

Do you now advocate that someone living without a limb or limbs are "gruesome?" Many people who do quite well would beg to differ with you. And of COURSE they would do whatever necessary to save their daughter's life! Who in hell wouldn't?

This is a deplorable situation that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. And it's been upsetting to see absolute lies stated as fact, over and over again on FR. If any good can come of this, it is that people will think more carefully about signing Living Wills and making their intentions clear.

There are many lies stated. As above.

Michael received that money for her care and rehab and there has been no accounting of where that money went. None.

I am sorry but you are wrong about that. I can provide it to you , if you like. Or you can just type a few short words into GOOGLE and find it yourself.
