63% in Florida oppose government intervention in Schiavo case
Sun Sentinel ^ | March 26 2005 | Rafael Lorente

WASHINGTON -- By a margin of almost 2-to-1, likely Florida voters feel strongly that Congress and President Bush should have stayed out of the battle over Terri Schiavo's fate, according to a new poll conducted this week for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and Florida Times-Union.

Poll after poll after poll show that the GOP is reading the tea leaves wrong. The Democrates are mum, while the Pubs commit fratricide.

Or the people don't want the Feds interfering. Assuming that everyone agrees with your position is flawed logic.

Umm...don't know much about the Florida Times Union, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is a liberal rag. Those poll results are expected.

Among Republicans, 56 percent disapproved of the intervention and 41 percent approved. Among Democrats and independents disapproval rates were 67 and 68 percent, respectively.

FR marches to a drummer that no one else can hear...

This is exactly why Democracy is to be feared. Thank God this is a Constitutional Representative Republic. A little broken, as evidenced by this case, but by and large our individual rights are still preserved.

People are horribly ill informed about even normal issues, let alone this one. They don't know the background of the case and what is at stake.

These polls are bogus.

Most people in Florida are aware of one thing--the date their Social Security check arrives.

Soon, we will have to have starvation practice classes. 63% of the people think they're a great idea.

Where did I claim that everyone agrees with my position? All I'm saying is that if the media convince enough people that government intervention is wrong and that this is a family matter, they have diverted attention away from the fact that MS and Greer are getting away with murder.

Most people don't know 5% of the details of this case - they believe she is brain dead and that the "family" has decided to "let her go."

A judge ordering her death over the wishes of the family is certainly government interference.

The poll is showing that most americans don't want: government involved with individual rights. There is only one issue in this whole entire circus that needs to be addressed. Her right to die as she requested, that's it. Most people seem to be forgeting that.

"I say media snowjob. Unless the pollees are told the grody details about Terri, they only have a sanitized picture of it."

So, you think they should only hear what the advocacy sites say? Do you suppose that those sites and people are providing the entire picture, without bias?

Bottom line here is that most people who care about this whole issue HAVE heard the gory details...and they've made their decision about how they feel.

Again, don't assume that either side has all the facts straight. That's perfectly obvious from reading the tens of thousands of posts on FR. There is much misinformation coming from the Terri advocacy folks, too.

Assuming that everyone agrees with your position is flawed logic.

It's a far, far greater problem on a place like DU, which is utterly detached from the political reality of the country and filled with people that encounter nobody that disagrees with them in their daily life, but it's still a problem on FR.

But people make the mistake of assuming that FR is an accurate representation of the opinion of the country; it is not...particularly on a lot of social con issues. More than most social cons are prone to living sort of an insular existence where their family, and their friends and fellow churchmembers and whatnot all have similar views.

So true and in this case that drummer ain't got no rhythm.

Some have really gone over the edge on this. Jeb is not the problem nor the killer. Jeb must uphold the law rather some like it or not. And this BS about the polls being wrong, from left wing rags, etc. here we go again...if we don't like the poll shot the messenger.

this is poll is a fraud. The sun sentinal is so far left as to be absurd. You could even argue that that they staff is more"gay" than the NYT.

Seriously they HATE GWBush with venom that is beyond belief.

Seriously with all the push polling that we have seen in the last seven days, these numbes are about as absurd as saddam hussein winning election by 100%.

IF the PRIVATE polls were saing the republicans were making a mistake, hitlary would be out front voting aggainst fed. terri's law. (the senate gave a unanimous consent vote)

Goebles would be proud. Anyone who actually believes these polls should just volunteer to enjoy the euphoria of starving to death to help save social security benefits for the rest of us.

Notice how they never tell you the question that was asked. All the questions have been designed to illicit the answer desired. Example: "Terry has been in a persistent vegatative state for 15 years with absolutely no hope of recovery. Do you suuport the painless fashion in which she will be taken off life support or the governments desire to force her to stay alive?" The honest question should be, "Do you support the court order to kill Terry by starvation?" That question is factually and demonstrably true! Read me the results of that poll! Shame on our lazy press and murderous courts. They will not escape the wrath of a just God.

Ditto #10.

Since when did conservatives and Christians think it was a good idea to use children to make a political point? That's what the liberals do and get slammed for it.

Since when did conservatives think it was a good idea for the federal government to get involved in what has for years been a private matter between families and doctors?

Since when did conservatives think something should be a federal matter vs. a state's right.

Since when did Christians think it was okay to stand outside a Hospice with bullhorns yelling all day and night? Those patients in that Hospice are suffering because of this.

And there was an article today that a little girl got a phone call from the Hospice that her grandpa was dying and before she could get through all the security checkpoints, he'd died.

And since when did the GOP think it was a good idea to let Randall Terry think he owns the party and is going to control its agenda? He is the face of conservatism and Christianity that a LOT of the country does not like, including moderates AND other conservatives.

And since when did the president not understand Politics 101 that you do not cater to the 25% of your radical base? This is what the Democrats have done to disastrous results.
