A judge has awarded the former wife of a multimillionaire businessman a divorce settlement worth more than $40 million even though she admitted having affairs with her rock-climbing guide and a man she met on a flight to China.
In addition to a $24 million payment, Susan Sosin will keep the couple's $3.6 million Manhattan apartment, $2 million Utah ski house and $800,000 home in Wallkill, New York. But she has to vacate the couple's two mansions in Connecticut and three desert properties in Arizona.
In the divorce granted Wednesday, she also gets to keep $6 million in her brokerage accounts, eight cars and $2.9 million in jewelry, including a ruby piece her husband had bought for her but hadn't given to her prior to their divorce.
Richard Albrecht, attorney for Sosin's husband, Howard, estimated the total value of the award at $43 million, or 27 percent of the estate. She wanted half, he said.
"My opinion is her conduct in this matter affected the award," Albrecht said.
Susan Sosin's lawyer, Frederic J. Siegel, estimated the total value of the award was about $45 million and said his client asked for about 45 percent of the estate.
"By anybody's standards, it's a large amount of money," Siegel said. "Both parties will be able to move on with their lives."
Siegel said both sides were at fault for the divorce and defended his client as a good mother.
Howard Sosin, 54, who founded AIG Financial Products in 1987, filed for divorce after discovering his wife's relationships in February 2003. During an upgrade of their computer system, he found hundreds of e-mails between his wife and her lover, according to testimony.
Susan Sosin, 51, admitted in testimony that she had become intimate with a guide while rock climbing in 1996, though she...

I agree with you, but people can get divorces for all sorts of reasons - for example, maybe her partner was unfaithful.
All the story says was that they met when she was with someone else. In itself, that's not controversial (though the story makes it sound ornery, for sure).
So if a woman is with a man before and leaves that man (for a reason that is uncontroversial - his adultery, his abandonment, his abuse, for example), and then winds up becoming my companion, that doesn't mean the same set of facts will present themselves again.
I can have a wonderful fulfilling relationship with that woman (then again, maybe not). Millions of people leave bad relationships and start better ones with different people - it's not uncommon at all.
She isn't hard on the eyes, but no great prize either. That rock climber is a lucky guy - he better hang on to a special lady like that!! HAHAHA (as I chomp on my cigar and enjoy a good laugh at the couple's expense).
That may be the case - and here new ex should have known better - BUT - she certainly should not have received one red cent - the divorce, as far as I read - was 100% her fault, because of her infidelity.
Stupid, just stupid.
She got what she would have got (more or less) whether she was faithful or not.
If he had cheated on her, I don't think he should have lost every dime he owned. Just divide the marital property and each party can move on.
Those days are long gone. The correct move is to put all your money legally in a LLC, and then form a trust controlling the LLC. Your employer, ie, Microsoft hires your trust, and you're an employee of the trust drawing a $25,000 salary. Your house and car are owned by the LLC. You have no personal assets, but you have access to anything in disbursements at your discretion. The wife is entitled to NOTHING in a divorce other than a portion of your salary.
"Trophy wives" in reality are no better than two bit con women selling their goods to the highest bidder. With the LLC, you can drive Porsches and live in mansions, date a playmate, and she'll get a few pennies in a settlement. When she presses for marriage, watch the reaction when you inform her your true financial status. It's a great facial expression to observe when a con artist is busted. Why anyone would marry an american women is beyond me, but if you must, believe in the trust. Payback is a beeatch.
Yeah I know, its depressing.
I've thought about teaching myself Japanese and moving there.
Most of the women there are still pretty honest and old fashioned, however through Japanese culture.
Still less risky than an American woman it seems :(
Still single. And hating it.
