Mahony Flies To Rome For Solemnities, Conclave

By K. Connie Kang
Times Staff Writer

April 2, 2005

"As he prepared to fly to Rome to probably attend the funeral of the current pope and help elect a new one, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles asked for spiritual help to get through the momentous events ahead.

"I ask all the people in Southern California to pray for all the cardinals — that we listen wisely to God's voice, the Holy Spirit, and that we choose wisely the next shepherd of the universal church," Mahony told reporters Friday night at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Mahony had celebrated a noon and a 5 p.m. Mass before heading to LAX and ... (Snip) ...then Rome."

"As with many of the other cardinals who will choose a successor to John Paul II, this would be Mahony's first participation in such a conclave. He described himself as being "very excited but also nervous."

Mahony, whose diocese includes an estimated 5 million Roman Catholics in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, said the pope had been given a "very special grace" to know that death was near.

"We hear so often about people who are killed instantly ... and have no time to prepare for the greatest moment of our lives — passing from this life into eternal life," Mahony said.

In Rome, he and other cardinals from around the world will be asked to set dates for nine funeral Masses, Mahony said. He said the pope's burial should take place between the fourth and sixth day after his death..."

"...Only the Holy Spirit knows how that will unfold, he said, declining to speculate on candidates..."

Don't worry, we won't get a liberal Pope. Soon after Pope JPII was elected, the MSM started the death watch, hoping that the next one would be liberal. The Holy Spirit will surprise them all, with a successor who promulgates the never changing faith. You'll see!

Your mother is a saint now. My mom always encouraged me to pray to family. I've never seen my grandmother but I dreamed her one night and my mom nearly fainted. Familial bonds don't end when you die. There's so much more to human beings than mere physical bodies.

There's so much more to human beings than mere physical bodies.

OMG! That's been my view for years. In fact, I consider this physical stuff, this flesh and bone, the least important and most irrelevant part of all.

It's all about the soul, not the body.

He hasn't been just the Catholic Pope but a leader of Christians everywhere.

He has been the Pope of all mankind.

I was touched by your beautiful post. :o)

It's about both, I believe. But temporarily not having a body doesn't hinder the communion of saints.

Yeah, I think I might have overstated my thoughts a bit. The body will pass, but the soul is forever. This material world will pass, but the spiritual world is eternal.

At this hour, I sometimes lose my words.

It's okay and besides I know you're beside yourself with the Pope's illness. I can't sleep so I will be up for a while.

I've stayed up all night, too. I'm surprised I'm coherent. LOL!

We can leave off theology until we can think again. :o)

Fox hasn't been up to par today or so I've been told.
I've been mostly tuned into (gasp) PMSNBC.
I like their reverent and respectful attitude.

You have my deepest and sincere sympathy and prayers Mo.
Just want you to know that.

I had to change the channel when Mahoney was saying Mass for the Pope today. He is the antithesis of JPII in my opinion.
