Duke Energy CEO Anderson Calls for Federal Tax on Carbon
Electric Power Daily ^ | 8 APR 05 | Electric Power Daily

In what may be the first step of its kind by a major energy company, Duke Energy Chairman and CEO Paul Anderson Thursday said he believes a mandatory “economywide” federal tax on carbon is needed to slow the impact of climate change. Speaking at a breakfast in Charlotte, N.C., sponsored by the Charlotte Business Journal, Anderson said Duke “has long supported voluntary measures to reduce greenhouse gases. But it’s clear to me now that we have to move mandatory measures to get real results in a fair manner.”

“I believe U.S. public policy on global climate change should encourage a transition to a lower-carbon-intensive economy through a broad-based, mandatory approach,” Anderson said. “And I believe the best approach is a carbon tax, which addresses greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors of the economy.”

Anderson said such a tax would provide incentives for conservation, promote the use of low-emission power plants and spur technology innovations to address climate change. A carbon tax can offer price certainty, apply to all sectors and is easier to implement than a CO2 cap and an emissions trading program, which has been proposed on Capitol Hill, according to Duke’s new policy statement on climate change.

The Edison Electric Institute said Duke Energy is the only company to recently put the idea of a carbon tax on the table.

Folks...if you think your energy bills are high now, wait until these jackasses start this. Duke involved itself with too many gas-fired turbines...now they want to stick it to you.

Well, maybe this will assist in the development and construction of more nuclear facilities.

That said, the "Tax on Carbon" is just another tax system, and I don't for a second believe that global warming will come under control from anything mankind does, because I don't believe mankind has the ability to control the climate regardless of what we do.

If we passed a flatulence tax, the cities in the blue states would finally pay for themselves.

I wish he would have waited until Yucca Mountain goes into service before he expressed this opinion. When that happens, you'll see lots of nukes ordered.

I support a carbon tax to pay for nationalized nuclear power plants which would support 100% of our electrical generation needs for the next +50 years.

How would Duke energy like that?

So would I. But I would like to see the reactor designs standardized, not just for cost savings, but for safety reasons. And I would like the reactors run by the Navy, which has done an outstanding job with its nuclear propulsion systems.

Yes, it certainly makes sense at today's prices for fossil fuels. But nuclear power is renewable and we have done our pennance since Three Mile Island.

These are the same incompetent idiots who left North Carolina customers without power for weeks, in the aftermath of an ice storm! It's time for a Duke Power "Bill-Out" if this tax happens every customer should refuse to pay their bill!

There are units about the size of a whole house air conditioning box that will create all the energy you need for your home and pump back the excess power created to the power company. The government won't allow them to be sold though.

I suspect most of Global Warming is attributable to the hot air escaping from the mouths of idiots!

I knew there was an investment angle in it. No one in the energy business of any credibility believes in the global warming hoax, so far as I am aware.
