Gartner Inc. reported Friday that despite disappointing results for most vendors shipping computers in the United States, Apple has leapfrogged Toshiba to become the fifth largest vendor of PCs for the region, based on Gartner's estimates of shipments made during the first calendar quarter.
"Apple's PC shipments in the United States increased 45.1 percent in the first quarter," reported Gartner.
For the fiscal quarter ending in March, Apple reported 477,000 CPU units shipped for its Americas segment, which include North, South and Central America. The company also reported another 144,000 units shipped through its Retail segment, which includes domestic and international Apple Stores. Gartner estimates Apple shipped 571,000 units in North America specifically -- 3.7 percent marketshare, a 45.1 percent increase over the same calendar quarter in 2004, when Apple held 2.6 percent of the U.S. market.

Stock market note: Clearly a change in sentiment is in the wind; The market whacked AAPL badly this week, when it is firing on all cylinders about as well as any company can.
Actually, AAPL always rises right before an earnings or new product announcement, and then dips sharply right afterwards. It's been the same cycle since the mid-1990s.
The funny thing about AAPL is when there is good stock news, the stock always seems to go down, I should buy some more at this price.
Michael Dell can't boast of growth like that.
That was before the Mac Mini.
The most recent quarter, Apple has strapped on the rockets.
Buy on the rumor, sell on the news...
I'm FReeping using a Toshiba Satellite P25 S607.
Love its 17" screen, sound and CPU speed.
But its skimpy DVD-RW drive SUCKS. The thing broke in no time.
Ping...
Toshiba made a great notebook in the early 90's and then slid a little in quality, IMO. Looks like they are back.
People are using the ipod and are buying the computers as a result. I'm sure Apple is happy about that.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Jim Cramer said on "Mad Money" this afternoon that people won't be satisfied with AAPL until they have another blowout quarter, then it'll zoom up. Until then, expect it to wander back and forth between 32 and 38.
(Disclaimer: his comments, not mine. YMMV, not valid in Quebec.)
I have never and will never knowingly purchase a Toshiba product.
Had no idea. Thanks for the head's up. The OS code that's running on it was licensed to China as well.
Apple didn't need to strap them on, they've always been there since the iPod arrived.
They just turned them on. And wait until they get to stage 2.
