Here is the response I received from Her Highness Barb Vander Veen:

Dear Mr. XXXXX,

Thank you for contacting my office. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with House Bill 4624. It appears that we will have to agree to disagree on this subject.

I believe by making Michigan bars and restaurants smoke-free state wide we will level the playing field for all establishment owners. Right now as the law stands, restaurants can go smoke-free but they stand the chance of losing business because the restaurant next door may not go the same route. If both are under the same law, they will then continue to operate on a level playing field.

Many critics speak of the amount of business that will be lost by going smoke-free. From the data that is available, this is simply not true.

Smoke-free Air Saves Businesses Money. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the cost savings of eliminating secondhand smoke in the workplace from reducing premature deaths and tobacco-related illnesses to be between $35 and $66 billion a year.

Smoke-free Laws Do Not Harm Restaurant Sales. In fact, more people are demanding smoke-free establishments. Data from the New York City Department of Finance show that tax receipts increased by 8.7 percent, or approximately $1.4 million.

Nearly 8 in 10 (80 percent) of respondents of a poll commissioned in Michigan state they would be “more likely” or “just as likely” to patronize the restaurants they typically go to if they became smoke-free

Smoke-free Air Laws Do Not Harm Bars. There has not yet been a study that has proven smoke-free air laws negatively affect the bar industry. Research on smoke-free communities in California, Massachusetts, Oregon, Texas, New York and Florida show that smoke-free air ordinances had no negative effect on bar sales.

Smoke-free Laws Do Not Increase Unemployment. A study conducted by the New York City Department of Finance reported 10,600 new jobs in its bars and restaurants between March 2003 and December 2003.

Consumer choice is often mentioned when people criticize this bill, and I believe this is important, however what about worker choice? Consumers can choose to go to a smoke-free restaurant or to sit in the non-smoking section, but what about the waitress or the bartender at that establishment? They are not afforded the same choice. With Michigan having the nation’s highest unemployment rate I don’t believe it is as easy as some claim to just get another job.

The science of how damaging secondhand smoke is can not be ignored. Also let us remember the nearly 17 million Americans that suffer from asthma and are not able to enjoy a night out because of the risk of inhaling secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke causes between 35,000 and 40,000 deaths from heart disease every year.

12,000 otherwise healthy nonsmokers will die of some form of cancer, 3,000 specifically to lung cancer, because of their exposure to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke contains over 4000 substances, more than 60 of which are known or suspected to cause cancer.

Some restaurants and bars have invested money for non-smoking sections as well as smoke eating machines, but this does not go far enough. There are still a number of restaurants and bars that do not have ample smoke eating devices for their establishments. It is argued that if someone doesn’t want to eat in a smoke filled environment, then they can go to another restaurant. Let us be reasonable here, this is often not an option. The number of restaurants that are smoke-free is minimal compared to those that allow smoking. I think its time to consider the person who wishes to breathe clean air.

Again, thank you for contacting my office. If you wish to keep up with the status of this bill on your own you can search for HB 4624 at www.legislature.mi.gov.

Sincerely, Barb Vander Veen

Right off the bat she proves just how BATTY she is.........

First she admits that non-smoking hurts business and then she says - so let's hurt ALL business.

Hey lady - did you ever here of let the market decide? No, I didn't think so.

Why in heaven's name do people keep electing these control freaks?????

I'll get into the rest of her crapola after a good night's sleep.

Thank you for your post, Peter Libra :) The older I get, the less tolerant I am when it comes to rude and obnoxious behaviour, and if good people do not speak out, then who will? Perhaps some folks do not mind being known for their lack of grace and manners, and maybe they enjoy the attention their disruptive behaviour causes. But I think most people prefer to be known for their kind words and deeds, and the ability to converse with others in a mature fashion.

As for the smoking bans......I tell ya, it's yet another dagger into the heart of freedom. I feel it is a disgrace that those who do not wish to smoke are now forcing their personal preferences on those who do. I understood why they banned smoking on planes because a non-smoker can't just walk out of the plane when he/she wants to. Well, not without a parachute. lol But when one is on the ground, one has many choices. And now they want to ban smoking in outside areas as well, and force businesses to be smoke-free, even when they are privately owned. Yes, that is irritating, and THAT is an understatement. :)

"I believe by making Michigan bars and restaurants smoke-free state wide we will level the playing field for all establishment owners."

Right there lies a huge portion of the problem. Liberals want all playing fields to be level. Life is not level, life was not meant to be level. Thanks for posting Barb Vander Veen's letter, Hot Tabasco. :)

Hey! Other than Detroit, there's nothing wrong with Michigan. I've been trying to devise a plan to annex Detroit to Canada, but haven't come up with any good ideas yet.

I have tried to get them to cut it loose and let it float away, or build a wall around it an forget it.

No luck yet.

Here is a copy of my email to the RINO:

I have a suggestion for you your Highness, why not allow the citizens of Michigan to vote on your proposal rather than let you and your fellow elected elitists dictate what you deem to be good for us?

Furthermore, I also propose that such bill only be passed by a MAJORITY OF THE REGISTERED VOTERS in the state of Michigan rather than merely a majority of those who vote.

IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK OR DO YOU FEAR THE COMMON SENSE RATIONALE OF THOSE YOU OVERSEE?

Here is her response to me:

Dear Mr. XXXXX,

Thank you for your interest in a continued dialogue on this issue.

I believe there is interest in a ballot initiative for this bill if it stalls in the legislature. I don't believe this would work for all items that we vote on, because of the sheer volume of bills, but if the public wishes to vote on this issue I would welcome a group having this put on the ballot. I would like to let you know that out of the calls and emails my office has received the overwhelming majority is in favor of this legislation.

Our form of government was set up so that the people would elect representatives to vote for them on the matters that come before the government. It isn't feasible to have a majority of registered voters take a look at bills like this. I believe often times a majority of registered voters do not make their votes heard when we are voting in a presidential election, so it would be even tougher for all issues like this.

Again, thank you for contacting my office.

Sincerely,

Barb Vander Veen

Here is my follow up to her:

Dear Barbara,

I really hate to say this but you are nothing more than a typical lying democrat who uses false arguments and fraudulent statistics in order to push your own personal agenda. The reason you are afraid of utilizing a majority of the registered voters is that it enables you and your ilk to utilize the silent voice of those who could care less about your smoking issues to your own advantage. In political speak, that is called "Tyranny of the Minority"!

Here is a quote from your own statement which pretty much sums up your lame argument against smoking and the one which all liberals such as you ultimately rely on to support your unsupportable arguments:

"I believe by making Michigan bars and restaurants smoke-free state wide we will level the playing field for all establishment owners."

Unfortunately those neighborhood bar owners, those bars you would never ever think about stepping foot into, are the businesses who are going to suffer the most. Their clientele are the hard working blue coller workers who stop by after work to down a few beers, shoot some pool and smoke cigarettes. What do you think is going to happen to them when your tobacco police decide to stop by just to see if anyone is smoking? Oh, its going to be a couple $500 dollar fines or so then the penalty will increase to the point where the owner is going to have to tell his patrons "no more smoking". At that point his patrons will tell him to kiss his ass and head on home for his brews instead. Then the bar goes out of business...........

In your arguments to the legislature, you never once mentioned the disasterous effects your smoking bans have across this united states on the neighborhood mom and pops but you didn't really care did you? You elitists never do!

Here's some results of your socialist feel good anti-tobacco bans:
