Where is the FCC when we need them?: Vets benefits cut doesn't illicit a peep
JWR ^ | 4-20-05 | Steve Young

Posted on 04/20/2005 6:03:23 AM PDT by FlyLow

If there was ever a time the FCC should jump on broadcasting sin, this is it. I'm not talking about what was said as much as what hasn't.

Last month, Congress rejected additional funds for veterans' health care and actually cut veterans benefits in their budget resolution. And yet, Talk Radio, which has been 100% behind the administration's sending our young men and women into war, hasn't raised a vocal cord in protest over Congress's refusal to give appropriate health services to our disabled veterans.

A vote AGAINST our military but not a peep from those who so passionately preach undying support for our soldiers. Perhaps they were too busy not letting go of Clinton's presidency.

The GOP budget resolution contained reconciliation orders requiring the House Veterans' Affairs (VA) Committee to cut benefits or to tax veterans by increasing their fees. Over five years, the Republican budget resolution will cut almost $16 billion from veterans' medical assistance.

Talk Radio? Nothing. Perhaps they was too busy fighting 24/7 for Terri Schiavo's care to have time to care about the tens of thousands of our veterans who's care was cut.

For all the fire and brimstone complaining in the article, it never really explains the "cuts" or what "fees" are increasing or who would be affected...

What's this guy on? Fines against broadcasters for things they fail to say? Can fines for our thoughts be far behind?

People seeking more government control and rules and regulations never cease to amaze me.

He does have a point - aside from the FCC stuff. We need funding for veteran care now more than ever. Know any vets that need medical help? I do.

I got a checkup at a new VA clinic yesterday and was damned grateful for it, too!

He is not far off the mark. There use to be an FCC requirement for broadcasters to report the news until the industry was deregulated under Reagan. Since then the fine line between entertainment and hard news has all but disappeared.

I was told to take tylenol and use ice packs on my knees (jumped off too many airplanes). Guess that used up all my vet's benefits. There are those that are much worse off - I hope they're getting treated better.

I don't know what to beleive. My father-in-law is a Navy vet who served in the late 50's. He only went into the Navy to avoid jail. He served whatever the minimum enlistment was. Today, he is retired and is using the VA for his healthcare. He has a hearing problem which they somehow connected with his Navy service instead of his 20+ years working in the private sector with heavy machinery. He gets everything very cheaply at the VA up to and including the BATTERIES for his hearing aid! I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. If the VA can afford to pay for this kind of stuff, they either have too much $$ or they are using it poorly.

Perscriptions: deductable goes from $7.00/rx to $15/rx. that is on top of the raise 3 years ago the went from $3/rx to $7.00 rx.

$250/ year fee to use VA.

Over 65, you go into the medicare system.

That is for starters.

Yes, they are adding 7% to the VA budget from last year, but adding 100,000 new vets. They have to cut us old timers out to make room.

What do you think it will take to get this situation more into the public eye?

JWR and Steve Young need to go back to school. It's 'ELICIT', not 'illicit'.

I have no idea. I tried to call Medved show, and was insulted for even suggesting that the older vet was being shafted.

I'm guessing that by deductible, you mean copay - and I have to tell you, $15 isn't bad compared to a lot of plans out there. There shouldn't be a cost at all for the vets, but still and all, that's not bad as a copay.

Ya, co-pay, TB. And I agree, $15 isn't too bad. Neither is the $250/year. Neither is the kicking us out to medicare. But put it all together, and it is a pattern of cutting benefits.

People look on us (especially VietNam vets) who use VA as on welfare. The VA is not welfare. It was paid for in blood on Normandy Beach, Hue, Iraq and Heartbreak Ridge.
