How to Make the Dems Pay if Bolton Goes Down - Voinovich and the Golden Rule
WSJ BEST OF THE WEB ITODAY ^ | APRIL 20, 2005 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 04/20/2005 8:32:45 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Democrats trying to sink the nomination of John Bolton as United Nations ambassador scored a big victory yesterday, when Sen. George Voinovich, an Ohio Republican who sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, declared himself unready to back the nominee. The Dems' efforts to beat Bolton on ideological grounds--that he's too pro-American and has "disdain" for the U.N.--having failed, they turned to that old standby, the politics of personal destruction.

Voinovich's concern for the Golden Rule is certainly touching, but does it apply to air traffic controllers? What prompts the question is an incident that occurred in 1995, when he was governor of Ohio. The Cincinnati Enquirer's Cliff Radel described the incident in a June 1996 column:

Gov. Short Fuse blew on Oct. 20 when federal rules delayed his plane's takeoff as the president arrived in Columbus.

When this order is in effect, no planes other than essential aircraft are cleared for takeoff. That reduces the chances of a terrorist staging a kamikaze attack on Air Force One.

The order kept the governor and his plane on the ground. And he was honked.

Gov. Voinovich called it "bull"-something and ordered his pilot to break the rules and take off. He even dared the control tower to "shoot us down." That, too, would have cost. One hour of flying time for an F-15 Eagle fighter jet runs $3,399 to $4,037.

The Federal Aviation Administration "responded by slapping the governor with a standard $1,500 fine," and Voinovich decided to fight, at taxpayer expense. "We're paying his lawyers' $95-an-hour fee," noted Radel in June 1996. "Their bill could top out at $20,000."

Why, I am most concerned about these "allegations."

I hope we can take some more time to look into them.

Voinovich ain't a Dem. Much as I detest him, blaming him for this is just playing into the Dems hands. They block Bolton, and Voinovich gets the blame. They'll love it.

Sounds like he was being mean, and as Sen. Voinovich said, we can't have mean people dealing with others. Time for the Senator to resign immediately.

Speaking of the "Golden Rule" Ronald Maximus Reagan had a "Golden Rule" he called his 11th Commandment.... Thou Shalt not attack a fellow Republican"

We shouldn't attack Voinovich publicly, we should field a candidate in Ohio that will beat him when he is up for re-election

After he opened his mouth he then gave the opening to
Chafee to say no, gonna think about this. Which means
if it doesn't get out of committee then it doesn't get
to the floor.
I have tons of Republican relatives in Ohio and they
will find another Republican to replace him.

BINGO!

That's what they will try to do.... I predict by this time next week the RATS will point to Voinovich as the one who blocked Bolton's nomination out of the Committee and therefore, a full vote on the Senate floor.

We need to cool our jets and let the Democrats take as much rope as they need. The more this charade is played out in public, the more damage it does to the RATS. Any rational person who takes a close look at the accusations the RATS are floating will see just how small and petty they are.

So John Bolton doesn't appreciate being lied to, and he presses for the liar to be reassigned elsewhere. OH THE HUMANITY!!!

The hearings in the Foreign Relations Committee on Condi's Nomination and now John Bolton's, have been a perfect example of gutter politics on Steroids.

Joe Biden should be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance this past Friday when he read the script MoveOn.Org FedEx'd him on Friday Morning. After watching Biden's disingenuous recital during John Bolton's vertual Tribunal last Friday, I felt like leaping to my feet a singing "DONT CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA"

If Bush wanted to get even, just don't appoint a new UN ambassador and ignore it like it deserves to be ignored.

Why wait, avoid the rush:

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Bolton's nomination as U.N. ambassador suffered an unexpected setback Tuesday when the Republican-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee scrapped plans for a vote in favor of a fresh look at allegations of unbecoming conduct.

LOL, That's a good one.

I sometimes wonder if Chafee, Voinovich and Hagel aren't on the RATS Payroll for times when they need them the most. That Sellout Jim Jeffords was easy pickings for the RATS, Dashcle offered Jeffords the Chairmanship of the Education Committee and he took the bait Hook, Line and Sinker. Only to find himself all alone with no seniority on any of the Committees with no help from the RAT leaders who convinced him to betray his Party.

My Question is......... How many back room deals did it take to get Voinovich to betray his Party and the Presidents Nominee???
