Showdown Nears Over Bush Judicial Nominees
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Republicans on Thursday moved closer to a showdown with Democrats over filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees, sending two judges under dispute to the full Senate.
The GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee on identical 10-8 partisan votes gave its approval to Texas judge Priscilla Owen and California judge Janice Rogers Brown, who were nominated by Bush for lifetime judgeships on the regional U.S. appeals courts, the nation's second-highest courts.

Great news. I really want to follow Janice Rogers Brown, partially because she's an African American. I am white, but it's important for the black community to see that there are black conservatives. There are better role models than Jesse Jackson, Al Shady Sharpton, Wacko Jacko and 50 Cent.
I'll believe it when it happens. After following the so-far-successful Democrat effort to sink the Bolton nomination (to the UN), I'm feeling discouraged.
Nuke Em now!
We were discussing on another thread that GOP strategery might be to bring up Brown first...does Obama really want to have to filabuster her?
I already know ken5050 disagrees with this strategy.
Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), a leading advocate of the nuclear option to end the Democrats filibuster of judicial nominees, is privately arguing for a delay in the face of adverse internal party polls.

Bill Sammon just said on Fox News that "Bill Frsit is running for President", and is worried about how this will play out. LOL!
Since he's already endorsed Sheets Byrd for re-election, I don't think he'll have any hesitancy filibustering Justice Brown.
Man, if Frist doesn't know that nuking the Dems will likely catapult him into the lead for the '08 nomination, he seriously lacks political instincts.
I wonder..there's a huge difference...Brown gets the highest vote totals in California..BLUE state Cal..and Obama's not even gonna give her a vote?
You may have a point there. It will be interesting to see what happens, but my money is on Obama following in jack-booted lock-step with his party.
Note sure..he'd have a hard time explaining/justifying that one..it would haunt him big time later on...and of course, there's the "Sheets" issue..he supports Byrd.but NOT Brown..and how could he say he would vote for her, but opposes giving her a vote?..That's better/worse? thatn Kerry's "I voted for it befoe I voted against it>..<P.
The problem for Dems is that if they let one of these judges come to an up-or down vote, he/she will will..and get nearlyt 60 votes, or more..all the GOP plus most of the Dem Senators from Red states up in 2006..so the Dems' rational that they are "right" to filabuster supposedly unpopular judges collapses...
I wonder if the fact that Obama is only "black" when he wants to be will become a factor.
If Frist or Santorum or any of them back down I will NEVER give the Republican party a dime again. I've heard some mealy mouthed talk about Santorum. If he thinks whimping out on this will help him close against casey, he's very wrong. I am prepared to go to Pennsylvania to fight it out with the rats as I did in November, but if he lets this fall through and the evil donkey wins - forget it!
