Hotline: But do they get Fox at the Vatican? (Postponed Simpsons episode)
The Boston Herald ^ | 04/21/05 | Boston Herald

Fox and the producers of ``The Simpsons'' have decided to postpone a religion-skewering episode in deference to the papal succession, E! reports. The typically irreverent episode, titled ``The Father, Son and Holy Guest,'' features the voice of Liam Neeson as a priest, who inspires Bart after he gets expelled from Springfield Elementary and lands in a Catholic school. Hijinks ensue.

Fox decided to move the episode back to May 15 after the April 2 death of Pope John Paul II. The network had figured the date would give plenty of time for a new pope to be elected. Indeed, Pope Benedict XVI was chosen on Tuesday and will be inaugurated Sunday. Fox declined to comment on the episode rescheduling, which was originally reported in Daily Variety.

``The Simpsons' '' papal shuffle is the latest TV land tweak in recent weeks. ABC and producers of ``Desperate Housewives'' reportedly edited out a reference to Catholics earlier this month

"...Hijinks ensue. "

I love it when hijinks ensue.

I have to honestly say, the Simpsons has jumped the shark as of last season. Its really terrible lately.

I also love hijinks but its the skylarking and good natured ribbing that I really like.

I dont know if I'd go that far- they are a little up and down but still enjoyable.

This as opposed to REALLY jumping the shark where it is unwatchable...

I'm glad to hear you say so. I thought it was just me. I've found each recent episode I've seen dull and stale.

I agree - in addition to not being that funny, it seems the delicate political balance of their writers has been upset - much more ham-fisted attempts to skewer conservatives.

They jumped it awhile ago, imo. I stopped watching new episodes half way through the episode where the family went to "free speech jail" with Michael Moore, Sean Penn, and the Dixie Chicks.

The day before yesterday was the episode where Bush 41 moves in across the street and Homer and GHWB keep pulling pranks on each other, complete with George doing donuts on the Simpsons lawn. It's a really cute episode. My husband and I both wondered if that episode was made this season what it would be like? I'm guessing it wouldn't be nearly as cute.

Please, let this once-great show die with dignity. The writers have also fallen victim to typical lefty bias... something they used to avoid admirably in the past.

The religion-mocking episodes, or the 'deliberately outrageous' ones, are always the worst. Outside the musical-number ones.

"I have to honestly say, the Simpsons has jumped the shark as of last season. Its really terrible lately."

I tried to hang in there but every episode is chock full of liberal talking points.

Last week they went to Springfield Glacier which was, of course, reduced to a small puddle due to global warming. The park ranger character was quick to add that it was the position of the U.S. government that global warming did not exist. He called it a glacier, Lisa called it a puddle, insinuating the government was blind to obvious global warming. Every week, it's something else.

Ever notice that everybody in the show is portrayed as stupid, except Lisa, the symbol of liberalism?

Like the one about a month ago where they ripped Communist China to shreds?

Even Lisa is mocked for being overly-earnest and PC at times.

Simpsons jumped the Shark 5 years ago. I was a huge fan. I don't even care if I see it. Family Guy re-runs are much more clever, and the new season starts in 2 weeks.

"Even Lisa is mocked for being overly-earnest and PC at times."

Yes, because she is nieve and cares so much, not because she is stupid, like every other main character on the show.

Who's the evil guy in town? The rich Mr. Burns. Who sucks up to the evil guy when it's election time in Springfield and makes deals with this devil? The Arnold, the Rush character and other Republicans.

I could go on and on. I'm not saying they don't poke at the left sometimes, but the show has become, in construct, quite liberal.

I really like the family guy as well.
I think that maybe 2 seasons ago I noticed a huge drop in the number of laughs per episode that I was getting. I think now I never even smile.

I noticed something similar except now I'm falling asleep.

I really do love the Birch Barlow character.
Also, they do make fun of the Kennedys but that is about the end of it.

Skylarking can't hold a candle to "monkeyshines".
