$400 billion a year military..

Lots of nukes.

That's how we'd handle it if it gets like Israel.

You are right. The solution is always a "feel good" one which is most easily put in effect against law abiding citizens.

In the nineteen-thirties, America was a largely agrarian, somewhat isolationist sleeping giant... plagued by a depression that nobody could fix, distracted by flagpole sitters and escapist movies, while Hitler, Mussolini, and the Greater Southeast Asia Co-prosperity Sphere ( that's Imperial Japan, in weasel-words of their own choosing ) steamrollered much of the world. Plunder & pillage, rape & oppression were the watchwords of those days-- we looked, and worried from across the seas that were our moat.

The Three Stooges even made a movie satirizing it all. So did Charlie Chaplin.

Then, they hit us.

And you know what? That sleeping nation of farmers & mechanics & shopkeepers & housewives rose up, and in just a few short years, hammered that "Thousand-Year Reich" into the junkheap of history.

Turned all that steel and concrete into a smoking pile of rubble. Made their symbols of the broken Cross, and the Meatball, into mockeries. Pounded their "vengance weapons" and propaganda into the rubbish pile they deserved.

Hung their leaders like dogs.

Our assorted enemies think we can't do that again-- they look at our admittedly junk popular culture-- and yes, it's decadent, it's garbage, like the people who swim in it, and promote it-- and think we have grown too weak.

I have a simple rejoinder to that-- "try us... come on, try us, bet your lives, your countries, your culture, against us, one more time."

I say, we don't change that much from one generation to the next, and the blood runs true in America. Join the Third Reich on the ashheap of History.

>>. The Palestinians don't seem to learn from the mistake of Terrorism.<<

The Palestinians believe they are fighting a religious war. That alone is their reason for needing justification.

The Muslims believe the same thing. If we were to have car bombings in the US there would be an immediate and unstopping of series of murders. The US Muslim community would learn how Americans think very quickly.

The Muslims would hear one message from their neighbors. Either join your community in fighting terrorism and protect America or a death warrant might be placed on your head next week. Identify the people that you think might be involved in sleeper cells or your neighbors will think you are in one.

It would be a dangerous time for them unless they immediately became known as American patriots.

ps. The next time you post, please use paragraphs.

I think that the bottom line is that American's do tend to panic over little stuff. But when someone attacks us we become quickly enraged and will continue to hunt them until they are dead.

It's been said that America is slow to anger. That is true. But when we are aroused nations cease to exist and the world changes to how we want it to be.

There is no people able to love and care for others as we do. And there is no people who will hold an abiding hatred as long or as fervently as we do.

We are currently in a war against islam. It started because islam attacked us unprovoked (which royally ticked us off). In our mercy we decided to take out the worst of the bunch first and move on from there rather than taking all of islam out at once.

The terrorists know we can do it. A few nukes could take out Mecca, Medina, and every arab/moslem capital in moments and there is nothing anyone could do to stop us. They are too afraid to attack us this way. They know that it would mean the end of their culture, their families, their countries and their religion.

As long as we continue to respond strongly in the Middle East, we will keep them out of our lands. The arba is either at your feet or at your throat. We need to keep them at our feet until we can destroy the alst vestiges of the cult known as islam

(we also need to keep real American's in control of our government. No more traitor (read democrat) presidents)

We need a law mandating that people wash their hands, how long should people wash their hands, what kind of soap, what temp. of the water....Remember it's for the children!

If & when we did end up in this situation, I would first make sure that my family were safe & I would go hunting, I might reactivate the old "regulators". You must look into your old west history to get this one. As the song goes "they call for a rope in Texas and an tall oak tree"

Too bad you'd be rounded up as a potential threat. You saw how President Bush, other members of the government, and the media treated the Minutemen in Arizona.

I often wondered how we Americans would react if such terror came to our restaurants, malls and buses.

CCWs. States that don't already have concealed carry would come under ENORMOUS political pressure to legalize it.

"I think the evidence is mixed. I wish I could be entirely optimistic that we would react as befits a nation whose national anthem describes itself as "The home of the brave," but there is too much evidence that suggests a less than strong response."

Why don't you go to hell and ask the dead Taliban guys there whether or not Americans run.

(All bets are off about leftist Americans.)

In a way this article is kind of specious in that the threats to the two different countries aren't really the same. At least at the end he shows faith in the American character. IMO if we were that different than the Israelis then New York would be a ghost town after 911.

You know the part of their hands that people always miss? In between the fingers, so we would definitely need a law forcing washing between the fingers. And under the fingernails. And using your towel to turn off the water and open the door to go out of the bathroom....

LAMB: By the way, you say you don't agree entirely with "The Longest Day," Cornelius Ryan's book. What are the differences in what you've found?

AMBROSE: First of all, Ryan didn't have access to anything like the number of sources that I did. Ryan interviewed 250 men.

LAMB: When did he write that book?

AMBROSE: In 1955-57. Ryan didn't know about the Ultra secret, for example. There is an awful lot of high command stuff that Ryan never knew about. I'm not knocking Ryan's book. It was an inspiration to me. I read it when it first came out. I saw the movie, like everybody else in this country, and I loved the movie.

(snip)

And that happens as a climax in the movie, and Robert Mitchum says, "Let's go on up that hill," and it's like the cavalry to the rescue. Guys from all over the beach start yelling like banshees and start moving up that draw. It's a great movie scene, but nothing remotely like that ever happened in fact. What happened in fact was, those ravines were much too well-defended to get up. The tanks that the infantry were told were going to be coming in with them, beside them -- these swimming tanks, these Shermans that had the inflatable rubber skirts around them, 32 of the 35 of them sank. There was no way to get up the ravines, and the true story of what happened at Omaha was much more inspiring than the way Daryl Zanuck presented it.

The true story is, junior officers and noncoms who had been college students two years before and had ROTC commissions pinned down at that sea wall and couldn't retreat, couldn't go back -- it was just chaos back behind them -- couldn't, as the plan called for, go up the draws. They were getting butchered where they were all the sea wall because the Germans had it all zeroed in with their mortars that were coming down on top of them. And, "Over here, Captain," "Over here, Lieutenant, over here." A sergeant looked at this situation and said, "The hell with this. If I'm going to get killed, I'm going to take some Germans with me." And he would call out, "Follow me," and up he would start. Hitler didn't believe this was ever possible. Hitler was certain that the soft, effeminate children of democracy could never become soldiers. Hitler was certain that the Nazi youth would always outfight the Boy Scouts, and Hitler was wrong.

The Boy Scouts took them on D-Day. Joe Dawson led Company G. He started off with 200 men. He got to the top of the bluff with 20 men, but he got to the top. He was the first one to get there. He's going to be introducing President Clinton tomorrow at Omaha Beach. John Spaulding was another. He was a lieutenant. Many of them are nameless. I don't know their names. I've talked to men who've said, "I saw this lieutenant and he tossed a grenade into the embrasure of that fortification, and out came four Germans with their hands up. I thought to myself, hell, if he can do that, I can do that." "What was his name?" I will ask. "Geez, I don't know. I never found out his name. I never saw him before, and I never saw him again, but he was a great man. He got me up that bluff."

Yep, Hitler, Mussolini, and the whole sorry lot of Totalitarians bet wrong- and lost their lives and empires.

The spirit of America has a lot of cold hard iron stuffed into our veins.

The totalitarians keep making the same mistake over and over again. One of these days they'll get a clue.

If I may paraphrase Victor Davis Hanson, Free men make better killers than slaves do.
