It's been described as "the worst flu you ever had" and pain that never goes away. Fibromyalgia affects some 3 million to 6 million Americans -- primarily women.
Many struggle just to convince their doctor of their pain because symptoms are varied and no test can diagnose it. One woman finally found an answer herself.

Darlene discovered the key to her relief was in the foods she ate and those she eliminated. The trigger seemed to be a substance called excitotoxins. It's found in monosodium glutamate, high fructose corn syrup, even vegetables high in glutamate.
Without it, Darlene is like a new person.

Eliminating MSG and aspartame can be tough to do. Many processed foods contain these items and the consumer may be unaware since they can be listed as other ingredients.
According to Truth in Labeling Campaign, the following substances always contain MSG:
autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, gelatin, glutamate, glutamic acid, hydrolyzed protein, monopotassium glutamate, monosodium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast extract , yeast food, and yeast nutrient.

I've heard that fibromyalgia has been diagnosed since the 1880's but that they called it fibroitis until about 20 years ago. They found that though there is alot of pain, there is no damage to the tissues or the joints due to fibroitis therefore they changed the name to fibromyalgia to represent that.
Fibro = tissues and myalgia = pain.
I was taking the powder which had three different kinds of harmless stomach bacteria.
I didn't even have to watch my diet while I was getting well from this stuff.
Unfortunately, I had to start again after getting that virus stuff this winter and having to take antibiotics yet again but I never got back to feeling as badly as I did before the bacteria and I could still go outside without aching for a week.
Except for the virus, this is the best winter I've had in years.
Let's face it. We should just stop eating.
Almonds are great snack food. One one hand they do have quite a bit of calories. However:
Lots of Vitamin E,
Other anti-oxidants,
The good kind of fat (for the HDL levels, bring down the LDL's),
Fiber.
I think the "cure" for most of these sorts of things would be something like:
1. Chill out
2. Cut back on as many meds as one can stand (including anti biotics)
3. Good, wholesome diet, of good old fashioned normal food.
4. Excercise
5. Stop watching TV (I know this may seem odd, but my finding is that people who watch lots of TV seem to have psychological and medical problems in greater percentages)
6. Lose as much weight as possible
7. Prayer, quiet and silence, at least 30 minutes per day
8. Etc
I have this. It has disabled me. I also have herniated disks. When I go to the doctor, they talk to me about the disk pain. They look strange when I tell them it is the fibromyalgia that causes me by far the most problems.
For years many doctors didn't even believe this disease existed. Some still don't.
I agree 100%. You've hit the nail on the head!
Have you ever been on vacation to a tropical island or Central America? You play all day in the beach or the rain forest, and they feed you tropical foods, like mango, melon, fish, beans and rice. You come back wishing you could live that life 24/7.
If we would only listen to our bodies, instead of the experts on TV.

I snack on beef jerky, pork rinds, peanuts, cashews, cheddar cheese squares, dill pickles, stuff like that. I tried the Atkins candy bars, but I went into a major stall on my weight loss.
Please do not talk about something you do not have a clue about. Stress is only a minor factor in this disease and many others. Virus infection,Trauma,Accidents, sleep disorders, allergies, and many others factors are involved, and you need to stop painting everyone with the same brush. It is people's attitudes like yours that are the reason that some people with these disorders get worse and are told they are just nut cases.
Thanks, I will check it out. I would much rather go natural, then any medication.
It can be different for different people, but the main symptom that distinguishes FMS from other things like lupus or MS is the absence of any medical evidence for any other condition, along with widespread muscle pain that can be localized to specific 'trigger points' on the body. I know because I have it, as does my mother, and it's a major factor in my tagline. Other conditions usually associated with FMS are migraine headache, irritable bowel, recurrent cystitis, and fatigue. Most research indicates that it may be caused or aggravated by non-restorative sleep. Your body must enter REM sleep in order for the muscles to repair themselves from daily wear and tear.
I know there are folks out there who agree with the docs who say it's 'all in the patient's head'. Thank the Lord above I found a female doctor who also suffers from FMS. We know it's real, and while it is not life-threatening it can certainly be life-limiting. Most FMS sufferers are female, type A people who get exhausted and just can't recover. I fit that category to a T, working for the past 20 years as a systems analyst, raising 2 kids, trying to stay involved in church. My pastor (male) was diagnosed w/ FMS a few years after I was. His mother also had it, and some research indicates that it may be hereditary.
Diet RC? Same thing as Diet Rite? I like Diet Rite because it has no aspartame OR caffeine, and it tastes good. Caffeine is supposed to be a no-no for fibromites, which kills me because I buy coffee from the Dominican Republic and it's WONDERFUL. So I cheat a little there.
This is a little off the subject but I would like to encourage people to do their own research and investigation on some of these diagnoses. What seems like certainty from the medical professional may not be the final word.
A friend of mine started suffering from muscle weakness about a year and a half ago. It progressed fairly quickly to where he was stumbling and almost confined to a wheelchair. His hands cramped up and even breathing became a labor.
After much testing and prodding the doctors diagnosed ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and gave him the bleak picture of progressive deterioration until death in five years. This friend is in his fifties.
But the family kept on researching and consulting others. Finally a doctor said it was possible that the spinal column was progressively getting narrower, resulting in nerve compression and even compression of the spinal cord itself. They did surgery and when the nerve pressure was relieved, he was partially back in the game, at least as far as his legs were concerned.
Even then, doctors were dubious about whether surgery higher up the neck would help his crippled hands. Once again the family had to push and push. This man is coming home from the hospital this weekend (we hope) from his second surgery. His hands are noticeably relaxing and circulation is returning to his extremities. In laymen's terms, the doctors explained that the spinal column narrowed to the point of constricting spinal fluid circulation, resulting in little or no nerve communication with his extremities and even to his lungs eventually. He now has a titanium rod surrounding the spinal cord to resist the bone constriction.
The doctors had advised him and his wife to make him happy for his final years, to sit him in a corner and let nature take its course. Now he is on the road to, hopefully, full recovery although only time will tell if the year or more of inaction caused permanent damage. He is confident and hopeful although he understands progress will be slow.
Friday some church members are going to fix up their house (just cleaning and yard work) and then we are going to throw one great birthday party/homecoming party for him Saturday.
Follow your gut. Prayer for inspiration. If you don't feel right about your doctor's work, question it.
One nutritionist had me on acidophilus and something that begins with "B" but I can't remember the name of it just now. You can get them at a health food store or GNC or one of those kinds of stores.
Ever try Waist Watchers? It's made with splenda and tastes great. I don't know how good it is for you but I do like the taste as opposed to other diet sodas.
Thank-you Samantha. After 2 recent trips to ER for intense chest pains, many EKG's and Echo's, another sress test, and a cath procedure on the heart without finding cause or reasoning for the acute pains that appeared to be heart attacks, we changed our diet completely and are making ammends in lack of exercise. She had already been diagnosed with fibro at the beginning of the year but this heart/chest pains was totally new. To be safe, the docter prescribed nitro under the tongue for these flair-ups (which we hope will diminish soon). I'll check out both reference books.
