Dismay at US Koran 'desecration'
BBC ^ | 8 May 2005 | BBC News - World Edition

Pakistani officials say they are "deeply dismayed" over reports that the Koran was desecrated at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. The latest edition of the American Newsweek magazine said such tactics were used to rattle suspects.

It says that US personnel on one occasion flushed a copy of Islam's most holy book "down the toilet".

Pakistan, a conservative Muslim nation, is also a key US ally in its war against terrorism.

'Highly objectionable'

Pakistani foreign office spokesman, Jalil Abbas Jilani, told the AFP news agency Pakistan was also concerned about "the highly objectionable and regrettable treatment meted out to the detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre".

Mr Jilani said the reported act of sacrilege had shocked people of every faith around the world.

"The government of Pakistan condemns the incident and demands that an inquiry should be conducted to bring to justice the perpetrators of this shameful act," he said.

Insulting the Koran and Islam's Prophet Mohammed is regarded as blasphemy and punishable by death in Pakistan.

In an interview last week with the BBC's Haroon Rashid, Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost, an Afghan prisoner recently released from the Cuban detention centre, said a number of Arab prisoners had still not spoken to their investigators after three years to protest at the desecration of the Koran by guards.

Mr Dost also said inmates' beards were shaved and the prisoners were shouted at during interrogations.

The US is holding about 520 inmates at Guantanamo Bay, many of them al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects captured in Pakistan and Afghanistan following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.

It must be a pretty thick book...I doubt it was flushed down a toilet, unless it was one of those $20,000 DoD toilets.

It's impossible to "desecrate" the Koran.

Heh..it depends on the definitions of "flushed" and "toilet".

I've seen some parta-pots that you could "flush" a box of Korans down with no problem.

Whenever I read stuff like this, I can't help but think about how they're not supposed to worship images. And yet the Koran in the context of this article is an image. Disrespectful of the religion, ehhhh maybe, punishable by death? It's an image of the words Allah and they shouldn't be worshipping it.

Again this is an example of the firey words and twists to incite the muslim people.

Be fair. Putting a crucifix in a glass of urine is the same sort of thing and if we're going to get indignant about the one, we ought to allow Muslims' indignation about the other.

If that is all its takes to stress them out, then I am going to find a copy of the Koran, an outhouse, and then serve myself an extra large serving of pork.

With all of the massacres and murders, you would think that reasonable people of all stripe would find something more worthy of their angst then the toilet practices at Gitmo.

Those interrogators are animals! Can you believe those poor prisoners were "shouted at" during interrogation?

Urban legend intended to incite the ignorant, emotive masses...there are countless unsubstantiated versions of this lie to be found on the internet...and its always the Pakistanis who seem to be getting insulted...TS

BBC: 23 May 2001, Japan investigates Koran desecration

The police in the north-western Japanese prefecture of Toyama say they are investigating a number of anti-Muslim incidents including the alleged theft and destruction of a copy of the Koran -- an incident which has angered Pakistanis living in Japan.

The Muslim holy book was found damaged with pages torn out, outside a Pakistani-owned car dealership, along with derogatory leaflets slandering Muslims.

The Pakistani embassy has appealed for the arrest of anyone involved in the desecration of the Koran, which was allegedly stolen from a meeting-palce in a nearby town where local Muslims gather to pray. Police are examining whether there is a connection with a group of right-wing extremists, who last month drove vehicles rigged with loudspeakers through the streets of Toyama demanding that Pakistanis leave town.
