Mexico's Fox furious at prospect of tougher US laws on illegals.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Vicente Fox called recent U.S. measures to stem illegal immigration a step back for bilateral relations on Friday and said Mexican migrants do jobs "that not even blacks want to do."

In comments likely to raise the temperature of the immigration debate, Fox defended the role of undocumented Mexican workers in the United States to a group of Texas business people meeting in Mexico.

"There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States," he said in a speech broadcast in part on local radio and reported on newspaper web sites.

Fox said recent, tougher measures against immigrants do not represent "the road we should be building between friends and partners."

Mexico has been seeking an accord with Washington for years to make it easier for millions of illegal Mexican immigrants to live and work in the United States. The country expects to repatriate this year more than 250,000 foreigners, mostly Central Americans headed for the U.S. border.

Mexican hopes were raised early last year when President Bush proposed a temporary worker program but it has become bogged down in Congress.

A key partner in U.S. border security, Mexico is upset at new U.S. controls on foreign-born people, including tougher rules to obtain drivers' licenses.

Congressional Republicans attached the immigration changes to legislation providing $82 billion in emergency funds for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush is expected to sign the legislation into law soon.

The law, approved unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday, waives environmental rules to allow the extension of a fence on the border between California and Mexico to stop illegal immigrants. Mexico calls the measure "overly extreme."

But Fox said he was encouraged by a bill put forward on Thursday by Sens. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, and Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, to allow some of the estimated 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to get legal jobs and eventual citizenship.

"I hope President Bush will support and push the initiative, as he has publicly agreed. I have to take his word and hope he delivers," Fox said.

>>I do not purchase any product with bilingual labels, if I can help it. It takes some careful shopping, but... Oh yeah, if the toilet paper is "muy suave," forget it! LOL.<<

Those items can also be produced by American companies who want to be able to sell their product in South America or the EU.

It not only doesn't have repercussions for those who don't comply---the bill doesn't even establish a way to shut down the border to keep MORE from coming in and doing the same thing, only this time KNOWING that this stupid McCain/Kennedy bill would give them a cheap ride to citizenship!

Did you see O'Reilly last night? He had a reporter from an Arizona newspaper that said that Arizona is a tourist state and that the business people in ARizona would be furious if the border WAS controlled.

Also, have a look at how much of your produce is grown in Mexico. In California, it varies by market. At Albertsons, ALL the tomatoes are from Mexico. At another supermarket, they still have a few grown in the U.S.

It says on the little sticker. If not sticker, ask to see the box the produce came in. That will tell you..

I just e-mailed this article to Terry Anderson

I just did the same thing!

It doesn't seem to matter how many times Fox insults America, our coward President refuses to speak up for us.

I don't think so. I think it's aimed at a growing "market" here. Spanish labelling in Europe would only be useful in Spain. Products exported to South America have their own labelling specific to the market there, wouldn't be bilingual.

First, it doesn't help to call the President names.

Second, Fox is an improvement

Third, Although Fox has been a disappointment, as a reformer he established close ties with President Bush when he was a governor and President Bush has a strong trait of loyalty.

I never have understood why we kowtow to the wishes of Fox. Why?

Something everyone of us should demand an answer to of President Bush.

Hmmm Good point.

I did a quick search and found a bunch of US products with bilingual labeling like this one
http://www.instawares.com/Ajax-Expert-Glass-and-Multi-Surface-Cleaner-Gallon-Size.04174CPL.0.7.htm

but you make a good point that it would not need to be for export.

Why is he upset? The Dallas Texas ISD is considering forcing school principals to enroll in Spanish classes this Sept and must be proficient in 3 years. Sounds to me like Fox has won and we have lost.

I hope Fox gets voted out, and the new guy will piss off Bush and Bush will come to our side.

It's pretty sh_tty when you have to hope the GOP president will come to your side...

If I understand the election laws in Mexico, Fox can't run again. Could be wrong.

I havent posted here for many many months.. and the reason essentially was I was sick and tired of being called a xenophobe and a racist because of my position regarding illegal immigration. How do you disprove a negative? It was assinine and despicable.. NOW we see that Fox himself really holds blacks and those from his own country who are illegals in this country in very low regard.. just who is he encouraging to come to this country and why?

Don't even get me started on that!!!

I e-mailed a local radio talk show host in Dallas that day I heard about that on the news...

I guess he was just as unhappy, because he had a portion of this show on that particular subject!!! There were teachers and spouses of teachers that had been laid off in Dallas to make room for teachers from MEXICO---just so they could talk to their students.....that is just SO wrong!!!

It's amazing that people really think she'll do anything about it. She has no more intention of stopping it than George W. Bush has.
