Everything I learned about successful TV from 'Everybody Loves Raymond'
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | May 15, 2005 | Rob Owen

The success of CBS's "Everybody Loves Raymond" offers several lessons today's TV executives would do well to recognize:

It takes time to grow a hit.

When "Raymond" premiered in September 1996, the show aired at 8:30 p.m. Friday and had terrible ratings. Critics raved about it, but viewers didn't find it. CBS paid attention to the critical plaudits and moved "Raymond" to 8:30 p.m. Monday in 1997, where it grew into a hit.

And who can forget the "baby-eating Bishop".

Tony Robinson was wonderful as Baldrick.

"Real Men" do NOT watch "Will and Grace", especially "Mountain Men". You can quote me on that.

You're right. Iwas at a friends house one time, and their kids were watching it. I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the next room. And couldn't believe what my friends were allowing their kids to watch (until I made a rather "rude" comment).

The next time I was home, flipping through channels, and came across it. I decided to give it another chance. WRONG! Same trash as before. Some scrawny little twit, acting like a 10 tear old, giggling every time he heard the word "balls". Oh yeah, thats funny. If your a prepubesent 10 year old.

Its a shame, Debra Messing reminds me of a girl I dated many many moons ago.

"She's just downright mean to Ray, Something not in character with conservatism."

You understand that she's playing a character on the show, right?

I never watched it until a few months ago, but I will not miss a rerun on TBS. The show is a riot.

,,,,,,,,,Raymond is funny, but his wife is a real *itch. Can't watch it 'cuz of her. She's just not funny.
,,,,,,,,,,

I agree with you. The wife's *itchyness spoils it for me frequently. Even when they write the show where it comes out in her favor her angry attitude makes it not worth while. Recently a rerun had her asking herself and Ray why DID she marry him? I have wondered that myself because she constantly finds him stupid, smelly, lazy, and refuses him sex.

If the character roles were reversed and Raymond had that attitude towards her it would be considered terrible and so boorish.

I actually do love Raymond and the others but I concur with you, Deborah is a downer.

Bingo! There are too many people in this life who just don't know how to relax and suspend reality for 30 minutes.

Quite a few of them post on FR. :-)

"Frasier" is probably one of the most intelligent and well-written sit-coms ever produced in this country.

True, it was a very funny and entertaining series. Unfortunately, "Frasier" did get tired towards the end of its run. TV shows probably weren't meant to go on that long. Keeping it going too long meant too many attempts at bedroom farce and too many "What stupid thing will Frasier do this week" shows. But Kelsey Grammar was talented enough to make even a lot of the more stale plots work.

"Even though we try to keep the humor adult, in the condom episode not once do we say 'condom.' When Marie made a sculpture of the female anatomy, we never mentioned what it was. We are very aware of the responsibility of being on television."

Good for them and I have to say I noticed it in both of the above episodes as well as others.

ELR is hysterical and I will very much miss it!

I'm sorry, but blaming their actions on a TV show is almost liberal-like behavior. Talk about not taking responsibility for one's actions and blaming them on something else. You should really talk with them.

Seriously. That's not right. They shouldn't do that to you.

Thank you for your concern.

My anecdote was somewhat enhanced for comedic effect.

That said, my parents and I get along pretty well. Their 'bad' behavior was addressed long ago, and we're doing much better now.

They've lived in Vegas for 20 years and we moved them here to NC back in late 03. After being so far apart for so long, they went a little nuts at first. We now try to respect each others privacy, etc.

For the record, I'm 52, they are 82 and 86. They are both in great health, still very active and my Dad is bored to tears with NC.

They will miss ELR but thank God for syndication.

Yeah but I don't.....HA HA HA!!!!!!!

That makes me so much better than you....(Stupidity and sarcasm off)

But in all seriousness???????.......I'm learning languages that I never thought I had time for because of no TV......plus I'm learning how to play the piano and the guitar. All the while not watching TV. I guess it works for some and for others...well I guess you do what you do!

Do you watch TV while in Europe and if you do, do you buy the products that are advertised...because that is what TV programs are for...to sell merchandise with tidbits of entertainment.

Yeah....I really don't know what is on TV any more. I stopped watching a few years ago and I now am TV STOOPID. I've never watched Everybody LOves Raymond because I didn't know it was on.

I don't know who is still on the air and who isn't. The last program I used to watch regularly was Cheers and I don't even know if it is still on. Probably not by now.

Noooooo...don't get me wrong.

If you want to watch TV....go right ahead.

The world needs people to buy the stuff being advertised.....because that is all TV is really used for...advertise stuff to buy with a little bit of entertainment in between.

Nooooooo go right ahead. I'm not saying you are stupid for watching TV. Nope. I like the idea of being able to choose if you want to sit in front of a glowing screen and mesmerize your mind with vicariuos experiences.

I prefer to live a life of tasting all it has to offer.

It would be a very crowded world where I go if all had the same ideas about TV and the waste of time that it is.

By the way.........Harvard University did a study on television watching and found that for every hour of TV watched......it costs you $250.00 in lost earnings due to the waste of time factor.

TV is very expensive when you look at it that way.
