The success of CBS's "Everybody Loves Raymond" offers several lessons today's TV executives would do well to recognize:
It takes time to grow a hit.
When "Raymond" premiered in September 1996, the show aired at 8:30 p.m. Friday and had terrible ratings. Critics raved about it, but viewers didn't find it. CBS paid attention to the critical plaudits and moved "Raymond" to 8:30 p.m. Monday in 1997, where it grew into a hit.

"Loves Raymond" never grabbed me -- but neither did "Seinfeld" until it went into reruns. Now, I love it. Perhaps I'll grow to love Raymond reruns. (Andy Griffith once said that he thought "Raymond" was the most creative comedy on TV.)
I think a very obscure Cartoon Network cartoon is the most creative comedy on TV. It's called Venture Brothers and it is brilliant.
Everybody does not love Raymond. I thought it was dreadful and yes, I've been married and had children. I just hated these actors, every one of them seemed ugly and stupid to me.
So, when the Romano character famously refers to himself in one episode as a "sexual camel", you were aware that my children may have been watching? How considerate of you.

I do too. Both of them contain genius comedy. The plotline of Seinfeld was genius as well. The writers managed to have several things going on at once in just one episode and bring it all back together at the very end. This kind of writing kept a person glued to the show from beginning to end. One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes still has to be the episode that ran backwards.
Anyone who brags about what they do in life, really isn't doing it.
I don't watch the new eps for some reason, but I watch the reruns all the time.

I fell asleep before Raymond this Monday so didn't even get to see the final episode. Good......it'll be new to me in reruns.
I'm not bragging, I'm just saying that anyone can do anything if they give up things that are a detriment to their lives.
I could be wrong, but to me it seems that you are stuck on this Everybody Loves Raymond show.
I find it amazing that anyone would sit in front of a glowing CRT or flat screen TV to fritter away their time watching TV.
Of course you could be a TV executive and know what I'm saying is true and don't want the truth out.

I guess doing something together with my wife that we enjoy and share a laugh over would be a waste of time to you.
You poor thing, constantly worrying about how much money you might NOT be making (see your prior posts quoting a Harvard study of all things!) by having some "down" time. There's more to life than money.
Personally, I just cannot watch TV. I cannot sit still for the "news". I cannot appreciate Entertainment Tonight. I don't watch TV so I don't irritate my wife. We don't argue very often, but we did have a heated (for us) argument that I ruin her enjoyment of those things.
And she was right. For example, one morning I walked into the kitchen, and she had the Today show on, which I can barely watch without being irritated or angry, and I let it show.
Out of love for my wife, I just let her watch those things, and I read or spend time on the computer. And I don't talk about what she is watching. If she enjoys it, I have to be okay with that.
Man, I can understand the anger and irritation that TV causes. Truth is I only watch about an hour of TV a week, despite accusations here to the contrary. I'll catch mostly King of the Hill because I think the writing is good and insightful and the show leans right, to boot. More and more though I'm running away from TV because there seems to be a growing trend that strikes me as something dangerously close to necrophilia, a puerile fascination with death and aberrant behavior without even an attempt at catharsis. I'm not bothered per se by graphic violence or depictions of repugnant behavior if there is a context that at least attempts to generate catharsis. For example, I can watch Band of Brothers, as graphic as it is, because it gives us a meaningful context. But shows like CSI linger voyeuristically on death, decay and corruption and yet offer us a crumbs worth of philosophical or moral context. Traffic-accident rubberneckers do the same thing.

There is more to life than watching TV...but I don't expect an addict to ever admit they have a problem.
That show "Everybody Loves Raymond",has used up more valuable time of peoples lifetimes than can be calculated.
Ok......I know.....I won't prate on telling people how evil TV is.....they already know.
I'm not telling people that because I say so they must stop watching TV.
I just hope I can reach a few people who know they have a problem and maybe, just maybe they'll do something about it.

I'm sorry that you equate watching a 30-minute TV show with my wife as being "addicted".
You must be very athletic as well since you just love to make huge leaps of assumptions.
We really can do both. I could type a large post regarding everything that I have done and accomplished in my life which would not be limited to owning my own business, traveling to many countries, raising 2 fine children, doing charity work, etc.
My gosh...how on earth did I ever find the time to watch a TV show! (sarcasm off).

Add up the numbers......1/2 hour per week. 52 weeks......26 hours a year...been on for how long???? I heard 9 years.....234 hours of this show.......9 and 3/4 days of this show alone in 9 years.Then you probably will watch the reruns.AT least two or 3 times more. Say 3 times....almost 30 days of this.
Then add up other TV shows you may watch.....the average for most people is over 4 hours a day.
I'm willing to bet that you could not give up TV for a year.
Try it.
...and by the way...congratulations on you family and your accomplishments.....but imagine if you gave up all TV for the rest of your life.......how much more could you have done?
I used to watch TV a lot.
My life has changed because I gave it up. It's just a way for manufacturers to sell you stuff you don' really need.
No, your attitude is arrogant. Condescending, and downright rude to those who find some family enjoyment doing something that you don't like.
It's obvious that you feel superior to anyone who doesn't agree with you.
