Md. cardinal to boycott Giuliani speech
5/18/2005, 11:11 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cardinal William Keeler will not attend a Jesuit university commencement because keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, a Catholic, supports abortion rights, an official said Wednesday.

Giuliani, the Republican former New York City mayor mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, is expected to award some 1,600 degrees and certificates at Friday's commencement at Loyola College of Maryland.

He also is to receive an honorary degree.

Friday's graduating class entered the school one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said Loyola spokesman Mark Kelly.

"The attacks had a huge effect on this class, many of whom are from New York," Kelly said late Wednesday. "The college selected Mayor Giuliani because of his courage and leadership after the attacks."

Kelly added Loyola does not agree with every position held by every speaker.

Keeler could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. His spokesman did not elaborate on the decision, but confirmed it was because of Giuliani's abortion stance.

The Cardinal Newman Society is planning protests, the group said in a statement.

The society is protesting speakers and honorees at 18 Catholic college and universities, saying the invitations violate the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement last year asserting "Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."

Earlier this week, New York Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, also a Catholic, canceled his speech to graduates of St. Elizabeth's College of Nursing after learning a bishop opposed his appearance. Boehlert said he did not want to draw attention from the graduation ceremony.

A spokeswoman for Giuliani did not immediately return phone calls.

Keep the focus on the subject. Rudy Giuliani isn't a neo-Nazi or a Klansman. He's a Republican. I don't agree with his views on abortion, but I didn't mind him speaking at the RNC.

What the Cardinal should do when a Nazi or a Klansman speaks is a totally different matter.

I still haven't taken my dogs for walk, so see you later.

Why are people upset because of Guiliani's views on abortion? If one must blame anybody, then blame the women who are having abortions. They are the murderers, and not Guiliani.

Just got an email this evening someone who got it from the Cardinal Newman Society. The President of the group is appearing tonight on Scarborough Country on MSNBC this evening (10 PM EDT, I think). He is planning to call for Giuliani to step aside and to allow a Pro Life speaker like Fr. Frank Pavone give the commencement. I think the group is picketing the venue where the commencement is to be held as well. Might be worth watching as Scarborough is a reasonable sort.

Check the cemeteries. St. Ignatius Loyola and all of the older Jesuits (when they were still loyally Catholic) must be rolling over in their graves.

There appears to be a pattern. First, Fr. Reese was removed from America magazine. Now it looks like they are cracking down on the colleges. This is the MOST discipline applied to the liberal Jesuits in QUITE a long time.

Waiting for the next Chess move on the board...

Maybe Benedict could appoint Fr. Fessio as the next Archbishop/Cardinal to replace Keeler.

Would that the problem were primarily about trial lawyers. It is not. That is about 2% of the fiscal problem.

"Sister Helen Amos, the executive chairman of the board, could not be reached for comment yesterday... Loyola officials said Giuliani will not address abortion during his address. They said the college opposes abortion and tries to teach students Catholic beliefs, but it also tries to foster an open dialogue. Neither professors nor students are required to be Catholic."

They said the college ... tries to teach students Catholic beliefs ...

Tries? Tries to teach? Couldn't they find anyone who CAN teach Catholic beliefs?

professors ... are [not] required to be Catholic.

Well, there is part of the problem, IMHO. It's supposed to be a Catholic university for crying out loud.

ELS: On behalf of myself, the TdTGC and HMBA, please don't die! We want the oman Catholic army at full strength for ther restoration of genuine authority.

Things you won't want to miss:

1. Roger Cardinal Mahoney with a paper bag over his head and cuffed behind his back, being led on the perp walk from the Taj Mahoney to the California hoosegow when the civil discovery process is completed in the probable world-record lawsuit by the victims of clerical misbhavior (including his) over the last few decades.

2. William Cardinal Keeler being replced by a Catholic in Baltimore.

3. Theodore Cardinal McCarrick ditto in DC.

4. The USCCB passing a resolution calling upon B-16 to give permission for it to dissolve itself.

5. The denial of the Eucharist to any known "Catholic" pro-abort, politician or otherwise. This includes SCOTUS trash Anthony Kennedy for his role as co-conspirator in Webster vs. Missouri and Planned Barrenhood vs. Casey.

6. The denial of funeral Masses to those mentioned in #5 above. After all, John Cardinal O'Connor denied a Catholic funeral to murdered Gambino Family crime boss Paul Castellano who was responsible for far fewer people killed much less innocent people killed than the pro-aborts among us and on SCOTUS and in Congress and in the Senate, and in the voting booth, etc. Denial of Catholic funeral should also involve a denial of burial in sacred ground. Fr. Richard McBrien wrote Mario Cuomo's Catholic quisling on abortion "personally opposed but" speech a couple of decades ago. Deny them Catholic funerals too.

If you have enjoyed the humor, I am happy to have helped to provide it.

Thanks. That photo will not help Rudy in New Hampshire or Iowa or South Carolina or anywhere in the Southland after which he will be an historical footnote.

Of course, he might not lose on it in New York if he ran against Madame Arkansas Antichrist in 2006.

Rudy Giuliani isn't a neo-Nazi or a Klansman.

He supports the killing of a class of human beings.

I think Rudy's rationale was: "When in Gomorrah, dress as the Gomorrahans do!"

I am so glad that the Cardinal refused to show up for the graduation. Hillary the Hun was honored today at Marymount - which used to be a Catholic college. This is another disgrace. I am not Catholc but I salute Cardinal Egan for denouncing Marymount. It's about time the Catholic Church excommunicated these pro abortion politicians. They could start with Ted Kennedy, who is also an adulterer, and follow with Geraldine Ferraro, who hs defended abortion on tv.

For Catholics who are actually Catholic, our Faith is infinitely more important than honoring the conceded courage and effectiveness after 9/11 of a pro-abortion Catholic. By allowing him to appear by invitation at a Catholic function much less to award him an honorary degree is to betray Catholic dogma and violate Catholic discipline. That would be true if he were not Catholic at all but were pro-abort.

Ought Loyola College to award an honorary degree and status as primary speaker at its graduation to someone who says that Nazism or Communism was just another political philosophy and admirable in various respects? I don't think so either.

It ill behooves institutions using the Catholic trademark of a Faith that teaches that 45-50 million dead innocent babies in the USA are victims of judicial/political murder to honor a political opportunist (he probably recognizes the reality of abortion as murder privately) of any Faith much less our own who claims that it is OK to kill the kids.

Our society can and will pay the price for those 45-50 million dead innocents. Our society has no business expecting the Catholic Church to ratify the societal crimes of SCOTUS and the USA against the unborn.

Whatever his virtues, until Rudy publicly repents, he is not fit to address any Catholic institution, not fit to be on stage at any Catholic function, and, like John Kerry, not fit to receive the Eucharist. Catholic property (like Loyola University claims to be), is as much in control of Catholic authority as your front porch is in control of your personal authority.
