7 Republicans abandon GOP on filibuster

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Seven Senate Republicans bolted from their leaders last night and dropped their support for the "nuclear option" in exchange for seven Democrats' abandoning filibusters against three of President Bush's judicial nominees. "This is really good news for every American tonight," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said moments after the deal was announced last night on live television. "This is a significant victory." The seven Republican signers were Sens. Mike DeWine of Ohio, Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island, John McCain of Arizona, John W. Warner of Virginia and Olympia J. Snowe of Maine. Click to Visit The seven Democratic signers were Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana, Ken Salazar of Colorado and Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii. The deal didn't satisfy Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has maintained that the Constitution requires up-or-down votes on all judicial nominees. "The agreement announced tonight falls short of that principle," the Tennessee Republican said on the Senate floor. "It falls short. It has some good news, and it has some disappointing news."

"I am starting to believe that the Republican party no longer wants my conservative vote.

I have been a rock-ribbed Republican since 1980, but I feel like I don't have a home there anymore."

That's also when I became a republican. I'm from Georgia and supported Reagan over Carter.

I did not leave the GOP. They left me.

We can blame the RINOs, but where was the GOP leadership?

"RINOs couldn't stand backing their party on a matter of importance. If the party had its cojones it ought to return the favor in kind by withdrawing its financial backing for RINOs re-election bids and sanctioning favored home-state projects. You desert the party, don't expect rewards for betraying it. "

Bye Bye bases.

I agree. I think the only election in which I ever failed to vote was one in which John Warner was running for re-election. I just couldn't stand to vote for him, and wouldn't vote for his opponent, so I didn't vote. It really bothered me not to vote, but these RINOs give you no choice. I just wish the Republicans would learn their lesson, but they never do. They didn't learn from Jeffords, they didn't learn from Specter... I am hoping maybe George Allen can change that course of action as the point man on GOP Senate elections (I forget the actual title of that position). And not to be petty, but to me one of the worst parts of this compromise is having to see John McCain on the news.... I am disgusted but trying very hard to see a silver lining in this cloud.

You must not have heard the anger and the depression last night.
Nobody's giving the republicans JACK.

Most of the anger and depression comes from the letdown. We all showed up for a fight, but the fighters kissed and made up before fight time. That was always a possibility, we just didn't know what form it would take.

I haven't given to the Republicans in ages. I do give to individual candidates (not RINOs) and advocay groups, e.g. Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Be patient. The DEMs can't resist being naughty. The obstructionist tactic of refusing to vote on a nominee is bound to come up again. If the GOP leadership looks the other way the next time, then we'll know the part of the Constitution that deals with nominees has been betrayed by the GOP.

Look.

It's a given, at this point.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Fool me 12,492,583 times, I am a Republican.

The talk in my circles (Maine) is that Snowe will NOT be re-elected. Most Republicans will support a primary bid against her, or just not vote for her.

The Maine GOP apparatus is not interested in conservatives. I tried approaching them many times, and they have a tin ear. I understand Snowe got a rather large "no vote" last election. I was one of them. The only way I'd vote for her or Collins if if the moonbat DEM is within spitting distance of winning.

I feel just fine, thankyewverymuch. You may recall that I predicted this possibility, as well as the pitfall of blame being trhown to the GOP based on the issue being cast as the GOP having control over the timing. Hah - as if the GOP can control the timing of DEM temper tantrums.

BTW, CSPAN callers have a decidedly different flavor this morning. It is not all liberals. People are really angry about this. That works in conservatives favor, I think. And it is heartening to hear how many people know that the issue is going to come back.

Just sent my email. At first I was going to omit my phone number, then thought... I hope they do call me! And oh yes, Senator Warner, keep that number handy to call me for a campaign contribution... I'll have lots to say to you then.

Thomas Sowell just had an excellent article on this topic. He points out that all this rhetoric about how good the Judges are, whether they are extremist, etc., is irrelevant. If those facts are true, they should be debated and discussed by the whole Senate in the confirmation process. He notes that the only issue here is whether the Senate, as a whole, gets to vote. It's a really good article. I am sure it is posted here somewhere, though I read it at townhall.com.

What we need to do is keep our dander up enough to get new Republican (not RINO) Senators in wherever we can. There must be races where the Republicans have a good chance of take over and our ire (and money) can be put to good use tipping the balance.

Also, I think two of the Democrat Senators from the South may not save themselves with this deal. I'd love to hear from people there who know if these seats can be taken.

Plus, do what ever it takes to make sure that McCain NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER gets anywhere near the presidency. That has to be done primary by primary.

I think that a number of the Senators in this "deal" want to be in McCain's scope for appointments etc, under the mistaken impression he still has a chance.

We can take care of that, too, by insuring that McCain FAILS.

To have someone get close to the presidency that would pull both this stunt on the elected President and would treat the nominees in this cavalier manner - IS NOT EVEN THINKABLE.

Again, we have to start planning, now, primary by primary.

Well, I am disappointed, somewhat, but think what would have happened if Frist pushed the rule change vote and lost! 2000 term all over again.

Well they got us again. I don't suppose we will ever realize what it means to be in the majority .

I am bitterly dissappointed. We work and work and why can't we get good people up there?

It's pathetic. I have been able to get through to two of the Senators offices. McCains people must be getting a lot of calls because they were really rude.

What a pack of trash holes!!!
