This is born out by my experience on Jeopardy.
According to the staffers, 4 men show up to try out for each woman. On average, those women who show up do just as well as the men.
But if your pool of applicants is 80% male, you're going to be stuck with a disproportionate number of men, even though the staff tries to balance genders as much as they can.
