Why? The slide of or moral standing has been, without question, that fast.

Listen to television, the use of vulgarities that would not have been allowed even 5 years ago is commonplace now. Society, without question has seen this rapid decline over the last forty years. Gradual desensitization of our populace.

Forty years ago, child pornography would have gotten you shunned/incarcerated for the rest of your days, now it is protected under the First Amendment. Don't kid yourself, we are more violent, perverse, and irresponsible than at any time in our history and it can statistically be traced back to the sixties.

I think posting a story like this makes people aware. My husband was married before and his ex-wife allows her children to pretty much care for themselves, he tried to get custody, but the judges say basically he has little rights. The boy will hit and choke his sister over a video game. I think that most of this comes from a world where parents think their children "do no wrong, my little angel" also where we take up for our children in the extremest of circustances in order keep them from seeing consequences for their actions or to keep from having to face the fact that something might not be quite right. We also show children through television, games and media, children really can get away with murder...after all they say "what can they do to me, I am too young......"

I suspect that there is an "America is wonderful" song that continually goes on in their head. They can't stand looking at the truth about the cultural changes we are undertaking thanks to the legislators they worship.

What causes this?

Ever watch any of the Nanny 911 or Super Nanny shows? After seeing some of the monsters on those shows (generally with loving, caring, but ignorant parents who have just given up) this is entirely believable.

Can you find me one case from 50 years ago where a child intentionally murdered an infant?

I will look and I am sure I can find more than one.

Until then, check out this chart from the Department of Justice. It shows that the rate of infanticide stayed relatively stable from 1976 through 2002.

One more thing. Notice the rate. It is per 100,000 population. For example, 2 per 100,000. The actual numbers range from around 500 to 800 murders per year. I agree it is a horrible crime but when looked at it terms of the total US population, it is hardly epidemic.

Your definition of "love" is completely false. Apparently you believe that "love" is an emotional state. It is not. Love is wanting and doing what is GOOD for another person-- i.e., one disciplines children not because one is angry, but because it is GOOD for them. A good parent does not give children stuff just to make them happy, but only gives what is GOOD for them. Love ALWAYS requires both thought and action, and love can be given in the complete absence of tender feelings (I still love my husband even when I'm annoyed, or even angry at him.) Love is a choice, an effort of will, and the highest of all ethical norms.

Agreed.Putting a 7-year-old to death is out of the question.
The parents drop the ball and let their kid down, and we should solve the problem with execution? Wrong. We need to be better parents if we want good kids. Unfortunately, good or bad, we lead by example, and some morons simply don't get it-and the kids pay the price.

Maybe the parents should be held responsible. But then if it's caused by a dead beat dad, how will we know? Or if it is caused by the mom that cares for the child mostly? How would we really know? We would first have to find out who to blame and in all cases it would be different. This is tough, but something has to be done, clearly.

If the parents were "right outside" why didn't they hear the baby screaming in pain from being hit?

Hi B4, Pete is a big boy. If someone as computer illiterate as I am can google, anybody can google.

Alot of different information there, he'll just have to go through it.

Just an Example:

Survey Shows Dramatic Increase
in Child Abuse and Neglect, 1986-1993

Excerpts from HHS Release, September 18, 1996
Link to Full HHS Release

The Department of Health and Human Services released a survey estimating that child abuse and neglect in the United States nearly doubled during the seven years between 1986 and 1993.

According to the HHS study, the number of total child maltreatment instances that were investigated by state agencies remained constant from 1986 to 1993; however, the percentage of cases investigated declined dramatically.

"It is shameful and startling to see that so many more children are in danger and that proportionately fewer incidents are investigated," HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala said. "Now states, schools, health care professionals -- all of us -- must commit ourselves to investigating and preventing child abuse with far greater effectiveness than we have seen in the past."

The report estimated the number of abused and neglected children increased from 1.4 million in 1986, to over 2.8 million in 1993. The number of children who were seriously injured quadrupled from about 143,000 to nearly 570,000.

When I was 7 I knew right from wrong. If this kid didn't know, his parents are worse than I already think they are.

Yep. I'm in a similar situation. My husband is not morally bankrupt because he is divorced. Heck, he didn't even want the divorce, but unfortunately his ex felt unfulfilled with monogamy. JMHO, painting all divorced people with the morally bankrupt brush is asinine.

Yes, children do suffer with divorce, but blaming a parent for something they could not prevent (thanks to no-fault divorce) is BS.

There is a whole lot of assumption going on about how horrible that dad and girlfriend are. Why not also assume that the father did not initiate the breakup of his previous marriage? Why not also assume that mommy dearest was fostering and encouraging jealousy of the infant half-sister?

I don't think murders or killings by children are a new phenomena. With the advent of all our technology, we are able to hear and read about it now.

1. An executioner, same as everybody else.
2. LI, Gas, etc. same as everybody else.
3. I'd have no problems with it, same as with living next to an executioner of adults.
4. And yes, we do already abort them, which is far messier and more painful to the baby that has done nothing wrong. In some cases, yes, I would like to live in a country that severely punishes anyone who murders someone else.

I have worked in the Justice field for almost eight years and there are so many contributing factors that are different in every case, and the juvenile rate is climbing in record numbers, in 1990 statistics say the average age of offenders in the juvenile court was 13 now I think it is 10, for a first arrest. I think everyone is at a loss as to which way to go. However, we do know that tougher laws have to be mandated against both parents and children, making them responsible, maybe then we can find some kind of deterrent, who knows...:(

"My definition of love?"
I didn't give you one. All I said is that everyone can "love".
But love doesn't mean you know what is GOOD.
A crack whore "loves" her child, but isn't showing it any GOOD by getting stoned and passing out leaving it to fend for itself around all her transient boyfriends.
