DaimlerChrysler says it will become the first manufacturer to unveil a diesel concept car that will meet more stringent pollution rules and get higher mileage than diesels now on the road.
...
Some environmentalists reacted with skepticism to the Daimler car, noting that manufacturers often introduce flashy concept cars that never make it to the production line. They also said the country would be better served by companies making more gasoline hybrid vehicles because they pollute less than cleaner-burning diesels.
"The auto industry is trying to convince the car-buying public . . . to reject better technology like hybrid cars," said Dan Becker, Washington director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Program.

Also I should mention that this car is 2-1/2 seconds faster on 0-100 km/h than the Prius.
Whereas the Sierra Club is being run by vegetables.

2001 Stuttgart, Daimler courts Chrysler:
"Ya, it vill be a marriage of equals: Daimler und Chrrrrrysler.
To be fair, ve do alphabetical, OK?
Und in Cherman, der 'Chrysler ees silent.
Ser gut!"
Interesting. It doesn't look all that hot but if gas prices continue to climb I'm sure many would adjust.
I keep my short sword and steel baton in the car. Its usually my anti car-jacking device, but I guess I could fend off a bear also.
Then there are those gals running out of Jenny Craig chasing after my car......
Is that a +1 short sword of slashing? :-)
Which means, were in the wrong businesses, we need to whip up some secret plans.
Not too shabby!
Years ago I drove a 300 series turbo diesel, it was truly a great car....think I got about 300,000 miles out of it until an employee of mine wrecked it....oh, and because the car was like a tank, they walked away from the accident unscathed.
I just got mine. It's an '85 (last year of the W123 chassis), and has only 172,000 miles. I'm hoping to get a fair number of miles out of it, but you never know.
Diesel will be making a comeback in this country. My brother publishes the best alternative fuel vehicle magazine in the country, GREEN CAR JOURNAL. He has a long term test care -- a diesel Jetta. It is as quiet as a gasoline engine. This is not your grandaddy's diesel.
Thanks for the info. I'm checking it out right now.
To be 'prefectly clear', the Jenny Craig gals are chasing after my car because the exhaust smells like french fries, not because I cut a dashing figure.
Actually the sword is a short 'ninja' sword from my Budo Taijutsu days. Had to stop, it was too rough on my arthritic joints.
