"The auto industry is trying to convince the car-buying public . . . to reject better technology like hybrid cars," said Dan Becker, Washington director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Program." Ya, the auto industry is really trying to discourage the purchase of hybrids. Never mind they have buyers on months long waiting lists to buy them, at sticker.

Anyhow...I had to cut down the article because it's from WaPo, but that 70 mpg is *combined*.
The highway number is 84 mpg!

I wouldn't buy a Liberty for serious off-roading...I was just making the point that for a small SUV, it does OK by comparison with other vehicles in its class. And the diesel helps in that regard.

Excellent point on the batteries ... heavy metals are serious trouble.
Our family has two (2) 1984 M-B 190D - four door sedans, each with a 72 bhp diesel engine, and five-speed manual transmission. These were purchased new and each has over 480,000 miles on them ... and they consistently get 46+ mpg ... and other than normal maintenance ... not one ounce of trouble ... ever!!!
Now to get M-B to sell their A-Class or B-Class in the US with diesel engines ... a another story.

"Believe what you may, but the Great Criswell had predicted that someday cars will run on vegetables." They already do. Diesel powered vehicles have been demonstrated to run on 100% soy bean oil (bio-diesel fuel).
To: jamaksin
I have a 300D. Doesn't get the mileage you're getting, but still respectable. We'll see after I run some Diesel Purge through it if it improves a bit.
The thing I don't like about the A-Class is it's front wheel drive. Somehow seems wrong to call it a M-B. But they do seem nice, anyhow.

There are a few hills here and there but I mostly will be going down trails. As for a rock crawler. A properly equipped wrangler is hard to beat. In an ideal world (read I could afford it) I would have an on road suv (shopping utility vehicle)like a 2wd liberty. And then have a hunting jeep with all the bells and whistles.

I don't want to hurt your feelings, but if it has doors and a top, it's not a Jeep, it's just another dodge.
