DaimlerChrysler says it will become the first manufacturer to unveil a diesel concept car that will meet more stringent pollution rules and get higher mileage than diesels now on the road.
...
Some environmentalists reacted with skepticism to the Daimler car, noting that manufacturers often introduce flashy concept cars that never make it to the production line. They also said the country would be better served by companies making more gasoline hybrid vehicles because they pollute less than cleaner-burning diesels.
"The auto industry is trying to convince the car-buying public . . . to reject better technology like hybrid cars," said Dan Becker, Washington director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Program.

Ya, the auto industry is really trying to discourage the purchase of hybrids. Never mind they have buyers on months long waiting lists to buy them, at sticker.
The highway number is 84 mpg!
mebbe so. but the group of serioud 4-wheelers i was with had absolutely nothing good to say about them. these folks know their stuff.
I do 95% on road, but run around a deeer lease. It will be fine for my needs.
You got that right. They would gladly appoint themselves as our overlords.
Don't tell no one, but back a few years ago, I got the Holly Carb that gives my Saturn SC2 100 mile/gal!!!
OK. just wanted to advise ya of what the dealer will never tell you.
I have a wrangler and I am happy with it. made some rock crawls I never thought it could have.
I wouldn't buy a Liberty for serious off-roading...I was just making the point that for a small SUV, it does OK by comparison with other vehicles in its class. And the diesel helps in that regard.
Our family has two (2) 1984 M-B 190D - four door sedans, each with a 72 bhp diesel engine, and five-speed manual transmission. These were purchased new and each has over 480,000 miles on them ... and they consistently get 46+ mpg ... and other than normal maintenance ... not one ounce of trouble ... ever!!!
Now to get M-B to sell their A-Class or B-Class in the US with diesel engines ... a another story.
i suppose it would be just fine for most applications, and you'll probably enjoy it just fine.
Probably no engineers, but Wiccans and Gaia-ans galore.
They already do. Diesel powered vehicles have been demonstrated to run on 100% soy bean oil (bio-diesel fuel).
I have a 300D. Doesn't get the mileage you're getting, but still respectable. We'll see after I run some Diesel Purge through it if it improves a bit.
The thing I don't like about the A-Class is it's front wheel drive. Somehow seems wrong to call it a M-B. But they do seem nice, anyhow.
"If you needed a sarcasm tag I can't help you."
LOL!! You can't be obvious enough with your sarcasm for some of the folks here.
There are a few hills here and there but I mostly will be going down trails. As for a rock crawler. A properly equipped wrangler is hard to beat. In an ideal world (read I could afford it) I would have an on road suv (shopping utility vehicle)like a 2wd liberty. And then have a hunting jeep with all the bells and whistles.
I heard they run on water.
