A 26-year-old Houston man was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of unlawfully transporting people for financial gain after authorities discovered 10 apparently illegal immigrants in the back of the sport utility vehicle he was driving.
Victoria County Sheriff's deputies pulled the man over on U.S. Highway 59 North on suspicion of a traffic violation, said Lt. Jeff Meyer, and two people fled the vehicle.
The driver, who was booked into the Victoria County Jail, also attempted to flee but was detained by officers, he said. The two men who fled were not found, Meyer said.
Deputies discovered four women ranging in age from 18 to 34 and six men ranging in age from 18 to 43 in the back of the vehicle, Meyer said.
The immigrants were turned over to officials with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday, Meyer said.
Deputies had been notified by Goliad County authorities of five vehicles that appeared to be traveling in a group, Meyer said. Recently immigrant smugglers have begun traveling in such a manner, he said.
The vehicle driven by the suspect matched the description of one of the vehicles that were provided by Goliad authorities, he said.
The other vehicles were not stopped, Meyer said.
Flesh-peddlers are the scum of the earth. Lock him up an throw away the key.
Coyote Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
So four of the five made it to Houston. Wonderful.
Is this supposed to be a success story? They way I read this is at least forty illegals were not stopped, two were stopped but ran away, and ten were turned over to immigration who no doubt immediately released them until their hearing date, which they will not show up for. CONGRESS NEEDS TO BE REPLACED!
I'm a scanner, often not a close reader. Anyone notice any identification of the nationaity or ethnicity of the people arrested? Hmmm?
