Mother Explains Fatal Pit Bull Mauling
Yahoo News ^ | June 12, 2005

Posted on 06/12/2005 9:37:04 PM PDT by Rennes Templar

SAN FRANCISCO - The mother of a 12-year-old boy killed in his own home by one of the family's two pit bulls said she had been so concerned about one of the dogs that she shut her son in the basement to protect him.

Maureen Faibish said she ordered Nicholas to stay in the basement while she did errands on June 3, the day he was attacked by one or both of the dogs. She said she was worried about the male dog, Rex, who was acting possessive because the female, Ella, was in heat.

"I put him down there, with a shovel on the door," Faibish told the San Francisco Chronicle. "And I told him: `Stay down there until I come back.' Typical Nicky, he wouldn't listen to me."

Nicholas apparently found a way to open the basement door.

Faibish said she felt compelled to call the Chronicle Saturday to defend herself against widespread public outrage directed at families with children who own pit bulls.

"My kids got along great with (the dogs)," she told the newspaper. "We were never seeing any kind of violent tendencies."

Faibish found her son's body in a bedroom. He was covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury. No charges have been filed.

Ella was shot to death by a police officer the day of the attack. Rex was taken to a shelter, but Faibish said she wanted him put down.

"I think of Rex as someone who ... murdered my child," she said.

She's attempting a CYA, and failing miserably.

Why would anyone keep dogs that are "actin agressively" in their homes. If she was so concerned, why didn't she take the boy with her. The age of the me me me parent and the consequences.

This is how she defends herself?

Geez.... How about a muzzle? How about locking the dogs downstairs? How about taking your kid with you!?!?!?

I've raised large dogs in my life and have never felt compelled to protect people from my dog with a shovel.

Sick. Twisted. Bad Parenting.

Also, did the dog have free roam of the house while the kid has to stay locked in the basement? It certainly sounds that way to me.

Words escape me on stories like this. I firmly believe she should be charged, tried, and convicted in the death of her son. Maybe she will see how it feels to be locked up in a basement-like cell.

It doesn't matter if the basement was a luxury suite; the kid should be able to walk about his own house as he pleased. The dog doesn't own the place. As for him giving her a hard time, it sounds as if the dog was giving her an even harder time. Ultimately, the kid paid with his life for his mother's selfishness and stupidity.

An "explantion"?

No way. This is pure after-the-fact rationalization. It's pitiful and disgusting.

In another article, Faibush is quoted as saying, in reference to her newly dead son, "It was his time to go."

It's too bad that the mother can't be "put down". This is negligent homicide, or at best wanton negligence resulting in death. Charges should be filed in this case.

Good Lord! Here we have a perfect example of a clueless and irresponsible pet owner that encouraged this attack through negligence and all you can do is suggest that this proves all pit bulls are vicious dogs?

Well don't be surprised if the cop that shot the other dog isn't charged with cruelty to animals.

Get ready to hear from PETA. I seem to remember them putting up a billboard, cheering for a shark that attacked a surfer.

How much you wanna bet she was breeding the dogs for cash and that's why Nicky was put in the basement? Can't let a little thing like child safety get in the way of business.

Doesn't it strike you as strange she had two unneutered pits, and no crates? You always neuter the aggressive breeds if you aren't actively breeding. It keeps a lot of behavioral problems away.

If you are a breeder, why don't you have crates? An amateur has no business breeding a dog like this at all anyway. They have to be carefully selected for temperament. You don't just say, let me make cute little puppies.

People love to agonize over pits but there are plenty of breeds out there that need smart handling. Akitas, Caucasian Shepherds, Rotties, etc. Some dogs just have been bred to be protective. And that's it. You better know what you are doing.

Why would anyone keep dogs that are "actin agressively" in their homes.

I had a paper route growing up and had several customers who kept pit bulls in their homes. I guess at least they didn't let them run wild. Our neighbor had a Doberman and another one had a Great Dane. I didn't like either of them. The ONE dog I really had to look for was the crazy chihuahua (sp?) who dared me to try to step on his lawn to put the paper in the paper box. I got awfully fast that year and had a lot of close calls too.

I think that I read on another thread that she was breeding them to sell.

"LOCK HER UP for reckless endangerment"

They only lock you up in SF if you're a white supremacist and your dog's victim is a lesbian down the hall.

I posted this on the other thread...

1. This mother was criminal in her behavior. She knowingly left a 12-year old child home alone with two pit-bulls, one in heat.

2. I think it was probably reckless behavior for her to have been breeding, as she admits, pit-bulls in her family home.

3. As for banning the dogs, I am not in favor of that. Much like guns, or fast cars, or butter . . . it is what the person does with it that matters.

All that being said, I would not have one, but nor would I have a 15 foot boa constrictor. Unfortunately, If my rights depended on everyone exercising them properly, I would have none. So, I think we blame people who act irresponsibly, not ban the animals. But, in order for that to work, a woman like this needs to be arrested, charged, and convicted.

Here's the quote from another source where the mother racks this one up to "fate". It was all God's fault, apparently.

Faibish returned in the middle of the afternoon on June 3 to discover her son's lifeless body in a bedroom. He was covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury.

It's Nicky's time to go,” she said. “When you're born you're destined to go and this was his time.”

Beyond my comprehension, too. A Democrat, undoubtedly, by extension of her passion to blame others.

bunch of rules

Add another rule. If you can't control your dog at all times, get rid of it. Especially if you have children.

Quite the New Agey b*tch, wouldn't you say?

Oh, I agree. I was just addressing that people were upset the dogs were upstairs and the kid in the basement. The basement may have been the nicer part of the house.

But you are right, dogs must always be last in the order. If it's not the kids house to roam, then the dog isn't safe, period.
