The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an office within the U.S. Department of Transportation, just finished its annual campaign to get us to wear our seatbelts under a program called "Click It or Ticket." States receive federal subsidies to ticket drivers if they or their passengers are not buckled up.

aside from the obvious nanny implications of this law,
what I dislike is that it gives another justification to pull you over and search you and your car.
Back when the Fed imposed the 55mph national speed limit, they simply withheld highway funds to those states choosing not to comply. The Fed is just blackmailing states into passing a law the Fed has no constitutional authority to make. It's easy to get the sheeple to swallow Bravo Sierra when you sell it with a rhyme. Fifty-five saves lives! Click it or ticket! If it does not fit, you must acquit!
Not in our state, Cal. It's a zero point offense.
As an aside, my son got one of these tickets. He was speeding, but the cop gave him -- and me -- a break.
No points = no insurance premium bump on my policy.
I always wear my seat belt but I find this campaign highly offensive. They always picture some burly sunglassed trooper looking like the class bully. How are we supposed to teach kids not to be afraid to approach a policeman if there is trouble when they're trying to scare everyone to wear seatbelts? Granted I want all real wrongdoers to be afraid at the sight a policeman but making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding people is a little much.
Probably do a touchdown dance if they happen to catch a dope smoker not wearing his seatbelt. ;)Especially if the smoker had some money they could

Fascism never happens overnight, and "promises" from politicians are not worth a bucketfull of bat doo-doo.
I'm not disagreeing with the fact that this is not the federal gov'ts business, but just to play devil's advocate here, do you think there may be an interest in localities requiring seatbelts due to the risk of hurting others as a human projectile?
Oops, pardon. I think you are right in reference to my state too. Seat belt isn't a point.
As a ponder though, I still wonder who else makes money from Insurance surcharges.
Maybe I wasn't mistaken. Mass does the surcharges for seat belts. NJ is a blue as Mass.
Called by its' real name, it is bribery. The government using your and my tax dollars to bribe states into doing what they want. I always thought that bribery was against the law. But I guess if it has the government stamp of approval it is A Okay.
It started that way in every singe state.
In Washington state, they promised the people it would never be a primary offense.

Gee and to think I've driven 20 years with no seat belt and been in several accidents (only one my fault) no worse for the wear...One could also ask by your logic how so many people stayed alive before seatbelts were even in vehicles.
This all needs to be taken back to the states.
We need to start acting locally in our townships, then counties and states to repeal these Unconstitutional Laws.

Yes, it's bribery, and robbery, too. State sponsored, sanctioned, and enforced, but robbery none the less. I will guarantee the founding fathers are whirling in their graves about nonsense like this. They fought a revolution over far less...

Hmm... I assume that you board the schoolbus every day to belt your kid in with his own personal belt, but who does this for him when he leaves school for the ride home?
