indeed, there will be no fight over this, its an "even trade". when (if) a pro-Roe justice retires, and Bush tries to replace that person with an anti-Roe one, then it all goes to hell. and only then will we really find out the detailed agreements of the deal that McCain and his "gang of 7" negotiated with the Dems.

None alas. I wish Bush would pick O'Connell myself as the new face. He's as smart as a whip, and would take some of the load off Scalia to do all the heavy lifting these days. Alas, his name is not in the big three. Gonzalez would be a mistake. He's too close to Bush, and well, too much of an unknown quantity, with well, moderate instincts. I like moderates often, but not at this point on the court. We need to make sure we don't get another Sandra Day on the court. (I put Kennedy in another category, almost sui generis category at this point, something akin to a bi-polar category.) While we disagree about states rights, other than that when it comes to the Court, I think we both agree on what is needed.

Good to hear from you John. :)

Ya, but alas not on that topic. One thing about if I am nominated; FR would become famous. Every post of mine would be pored over with a fine tooth comb. :)

to hell with Scalia, if he won't support federalism.

Thomas for Chief Justice.

I am just now getting the part of the Hugh Hewitt show that is about Rehnquist's retirement...

The guy he is talking to about this is Manuel Miranda!!!

He is a good guy that has been done so wrong by both the dems and REps....

Hugh said that Manuel is going to be a regular guest on his show...

Manuel says that he thinks there won't be an announcement before September IF THEN...he also thinks if there is one, it will be Garza...

So he kind of said the opposite of Hugh re; Rehnquist retiring next week....

Does anyone have the "Great One" F Levin's ear?

We could get the answer and it would be entertaining as well.

If this is true, all hell is going to break loose.

I just hope this is the battle that the Pubs have been keeping their powder dry for.

"Gonzalez would be a mistake."

That's an understatment, you do realize that appointing a pro Roe Justice will ensure the ProLifers are ready to walk on out on the GOP in 2008?

"We need to make sure we don't get another Sandra Day on the court."

Oooooooooh baby, you think Sandra is bad? I have it on VERY good authority that every Conservative White House lawyer who has worked with Gonzales in the past says he is a full blown Souter. Gonzales will be MUCH worse than Sandra.

But even worse than being a liberal, they say there "isn't a whole lot going on between his ears" if you know what I mean. The man isn't very smart, he hasn't written in any distinguished law journal, in fact he doesn't even read about legal theory much if at all from what I heard.

A SCOTUS Justice, liberal or Conservative, should at least have a razor sharp legal mind, and Gonzales is as sharp as an aluminum bat.

This will be an interesting judge of Bush's true character don't you think?

I mean, unlike Souter, Bush knows damn well that Gonzales won't overturn Roe, and that he Gonzales will probably a complete disaster for the Conservative movement.

Look at everything the Conservative grassroots has endured for 6 years to get Bush elected and reelected. Can you imagine the betrayal they would feel if Gonzales is taken over Luttig after everything they've done for Bush???

The only good thing that would come from a Gonzales appointment is that Jeb and his idiot son will NEVER have a shot at the GOP Presidential Primary.

We'll find out what type of a man Bush really is won't we?....

A Gonzales appointment will also mean that Bush LIED when he PROMISED he would only appoint "Strict Constructionits" to the court, because Bush isn't so dense that he doesn't know Gonzales is a liberal.

>>>"I keep reminding myself that Bush plays "Chess" not "checkers" and that they always misunderestimate him"<<<

Lately I wonder who Bush is playing Chess with. I understand that he represents "everyone" not just us Conservatives that elected him, but it is getting to the point that a couple of Pawns and Rooks need to be captured.

I still want him to accept the "Minute Men" and I don't know if he ever retracted the "Vigilante" label.

President Bush is very good at being a "nice guy" but if he is always going to get raked over the coals, at least he could occasionally Veto something or beat a Senator up in the Press or something.

You seem to know more about Gonzalez than most of us; he is at once both pro Roe and dumb. I didn't know that. How do you know that? What I know is that I don't know if Gonzalez is an even money bet or better to vote to overturn Roe. I want better odds. And it is not because I am an anti abortion militant (far from it), except in the third trimester. I just think the Roe has poisoned the public square far more than Rachel Carson could have imagined in her Silent Spring as to what DDT did to flora and fauna, in her most (as it turned out) "ascientific" perfervid moments.

Which reminds me - an acute awareness of the uncertainties attending so many matters is job one.

Hoping GWB will do a double-header recess appointment of Bolton and Scalia.

Janice Brown to the Supreme Court bench. It would be the ultimate payback for RAT obstruction, they allowed her to be a judge now she should go to the Supreme Court.
