'Indians are bastards anyway' - Kissinger (1971)

HUA HIN, Thailand - Indians are "a slippery, treacherous people", said president Richard Nixon. "The Indians are bastards anyway. They are the most aggressive goddamn people around," echoed his assistant for national security affairs, Henry Kissinger. The setting: a White House meeting on July 16, 1971, during the run-up to the India-Pakistan war which ultimately led to the birth of Bangladesh, erstwhile East Pakistan.

The US State Department recently declassified some of the Nixon White House tapes and secret documents that bring to light the way in which the Nixon administration went about the Bangladesh saga, reflecting the potential of mindsets and personal equations taking precedence over ground realities in White House decisionmaking.

In 1971, some 3 million people are estimated to have been killed in the genocide unleashed by Pakistan's military government on East Pakistan, leading to a rush of refugees into India, drawing India into a swift and decisive war that eventually forced Pakistan's hand. But all along, the Nixon administration sided with the military establishment of Pakistan over democratic India because of Nixon's "special relationship" with Pakistan's handsome military dictator, General Yahya Khan, and his uncontrolled revulsion at the "old witch" Indira Gandhi, India's then prime minister.

Despite the avowed goal of containing war, the US administration, in its zeal to put India in a spot, even went to the extent of pleading with the Chinese to initiate troop movements toward the Indian border in coordination with Pakistan, and assured it support in case the Soviet Union jumped into the fray. Near the end of the war, in a highly secret meeting on December 10, 1971, Kissinger pitched the idea to Chinese ambassador to the UN, Huang Ha.

The Indians must be "a slippery, treacherous people". How else are they in a position to take American jobs outsourced to India but an American can't move to India with the job. Now an Indian can emigrate to the US, work and is protected by US laws. When the American jobs are sent to India, that Indian can return to his own country and take the job but an American cannot emigrate to India with the job which is now officially an Indian job. That would be hiring Americans to take Indian jobs. And that the Indian govt refuses allow to happen.

I happen to listen to a Nixon/ Kissenger phone conv tape on c-span. They weren't being hateful but Kissinger had just been to India and Nixon said to him that when you go there they lie so much it's like a cloud is around you and you can't see what teh heck is really going on. Simple fact is many cultures in this world consider lying to be basic operating procedure. I'm not sure we're not one of them.

Not true.
There are no government restrictions to Americans comming here and working in India. As a matter of fact a lot of Americans ARE working in India in places like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

Just that most Americans wont be ready in the first place to work at the wages an Indian(in India) would be ready to do.

Anyway this post isnt about offshoring.

Such an irony that tomorrow when US fights a war with China, us "bastards" will be the allies!

I don't believe you'ld be our allies. I think you would find a way to play both ends against the middle. Much as Nehru did.

more like, when India and China start slugging it out, will the US be dragged in?

On another note, according to an Indian friend of mine, India doesn't have nukes cause of Pakistan, but because of China. Pakistan just isnt that much of a threat to China. Makes you think, doesn't it?

I dont think thats why Condolezza Rice would make so many trips to India so frequently. PM of India Dr.Manmohan Singh will be visiting the US next month.

We are heading towards an alliance and it would come much sooner then you think.

I have had this argument many times before. As things stand China is much more on a confrontation path with the US (and Japan) then with India. In fact they have even offered a strategic partnership with India. Now we only need to be too foolish to accept it.

We shall see. But after our experiences with India in the Cold War, I don't trust you folks much.

I didn't know you were Jewish so I thought it might have been a "half-in-jest" sort of comment. I've never seen serious anti-semitism on FR except from trolls.
