BELFAST (Reuters) - The IRA admitted on Friday to the 1973 killing of a teenage girl that it had blamed on the British army and apologised to her family who had called on the paramilitaries to accept responsibility.
Kathleen Feeney was shot dead near her home in Londonderry. At the time, the IRA, which put its violent, 30-year campaign against British rule on hold in 1997, blamed British soldiers for the 14-year-old's murder.
"We wish to apologise unreservedly to the Feeney family for the death of Kathleen and all the grief that our actions have caused to them," the IRA said in a statement to the Derry Journal.
British Army commanders in the area said some of their troops came under fire at the time of the incident, but denied any of the soldiers had fired the fatal shots.
Last year the Feeney family asked the IRA to admit its members had killed Kathleen, saying their failure to do so had added to the family's hurt and pain.
True - I want them ALL hauled before the courts! But a lot of Irish people can't see through that empty statement!
Well...report away if you will. I don't support all of the IRA's actions, but I don't believe the British should be in Northern Ireland either. The whole problem in Ireland is due to the British Empire's policy of "divide & conquer.
And I am no "troll". Note the date I joined FR.
And you think the Ulster Orangeman haven't killed their share of Irish children?
BOTH sides are guilty as hell. The d*mned British are to blame for ALL of it.
IT, thanks for the ping.
Any "motive" mentioned for this killing?
No bother Happy - will see you there. Just don't make me go to an Opera!
You know it moved forward to the Eve of Saint Johns - Christianity fitted pagan cultures, hmmm... can Islam do that?
The loyalist terrorists are scumbags too - but why make a moral equivalent of terrorists and the British government?
The majority of people in NI want to remain part of the UK.
My statement (for now), was aimed at fools who defended the IRA before.
One of the Opera's this year is an American Opera, and it's in English. You'd love it. You're a music man! :-)
No, I didn't. Anyway, there's always too many friggin' crustys at them things, always stoned and banging on about moon gods and wearing those silly flower dresses. Those guys should be sent to spike island to grow their organic veggies.
Speaking of moon gods, I'm of to my big brass bed - night all!
If you think the present problems in the North are anything to do with British 'occupation' you are misguided.
There are Ulster protestant unionists in NI whose families have lived there longer than your family have lived in the United States.
The problems in NI at the moment are largely due to racketeering by paramiliataries masquerading under a bullshit blanket of a 'cause' funded by the rose-tinted glasses of Boston bar rooms.
I do not defend most of their actions, but I do recognize their right to use revolution to drive the British out. You must also remember that for Michael Collins and the IRA, there would be no Free Ireland at all. I know how my ancestors were treated by the British, and all the blood of British soldiers for the next 100 years couldn't make up for the misery the English heaped on Ireland.
BTW, will it hard to find accomodation that weekend? We are thinking of renting a large house for the weekend for 2 families. Any ideas?
Well, how do you think that there ARE any Orangeman in Northern Ireland? The English put them there. You may be right about the motives of some, but I do know that whatever the problem, it is time for the English to leave.
Orangemen? William of Orange was Dutch!
BTW, if you want to go to one of the main Operas you gotta book one of those now too. Check out www.wexfordopera.com If you don't want to go to a full opera, check out the lunchtime concerts or the opera scenes. Very good value for money.
I thought that was common knowledge.
The IRA sold out to the man long ago. Probably why they are damned near out of business.
You can do a www.google.com search for those articles.
Fortunately American settlement started in earnest shortly thereafter, otherwise the English would have continued with the clearance and simply driven the Irish into the sea.
I would consider "pledge allegience to the crown and become a Protestant or we'll take your land" a dividing move.
I know in Iraq Reuter's reporters are required to be Baathist's party members. Are they required to be in the IRA in Ireland?
