Russia's state prosecutor has ordered an examination of Shulhan Arukh - a code of Jewish halakhic law compiled in the 16th century - to ascertain whether it constitutes racist incitement and anti-Russian material. . . . Last Thursday, attorneys from the Russian State Prosecutor's Office questioned Rabbi Zinovy Kogan, chairman of the Congress of Jewish Organizations - one of the two large Jewish umbrella organizations in Russia. Kogan was asked to explain the contents of Shulhan Arukh, especially regarding its treatment of non-Jews. Jerusalem sources following the affair said this is the first time since Stalin's regime that Russian officials have described holy Jewish scriptures as prohibited incitement. . . . The state prosecutor's last move has increased Israel's concern for the Jews in Russia, following the recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents there. These incidents include attacks on Jews and damage to Jewish property. The inquiry was launched following a letter signed by 500 public figures, including some 20 members of the nationalist Rodina party, urging the state prosecutor to outlaw the Jewish religion and all the Jewish organizations operating in Russia. The prosecutor rejected requests of Jewish organizations to open an investigation into those who had initiated the letter. Rodina's leader, Dimitri Rogozin, sent a letter to Moscow Chief Rabbi Pinhas Goldschmidt over the weekend, criticizing the anti-Semitic displays in his party. "Theological sources cannot be subjected to judiciary procedures," he wrote. . . . Alexander Boroda, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities told a Russian news agency: "We are shocked by the very examination. The fact that books from the 16th century, which have become part of Jewish heritage, are subject to investigation shows the short-sightedness of the state prosecutor's people."

I do agree that Putin himself has tried to make things better for Jewish people in Russia. But there are many around him who don't.
Well, yes, just like in this country, Russia has rabid nationalists. They are no good for either country.
We don't need our neo-nazis any more than Russia needs theirs.
And clearly not all in this party are in agreement with what happened. But that's not the point is it? The point is to smear Russia at all costs.
If he lets them go, then he is also the new stalin and must be associated with them.
It is so old and tiring it is almost amusing, the constant influx and eventual banning of one after another of these folk who come here to FR to post their agenda of hate. New screen names, same old stories. They only post russophobic material. Ho-hum.
Meanwhile Condi, Bush, and Sharon all work with Putin and seem to like him and value Russia's friendship.
These people are our own homegrown version of rabid nationalists in the flesh. They have confused hating an old enemy with patriotism. I try to pity them in their bitter, outdated mind warps, but at times I just find them to be tiring and I lose patience.
It takes years within the Orthodox church to follow it all and understand. But some think they can come here and post from without and know what they are talking about. Again, they make the author of their work clear to the rest of us. May God have mercy on them.
In reality, today’s authorities are no different from their predecessors. Like the Yeltsin administration, Putin’s team has come from under the wing of the old Soviet Communist Party. But unlike Yeltsin’s people, Putin’s team does not even try to hide the fact – rather, it cultivates the familial affinity. It is just as corporate, just as much built on personal loyalty and back-scratching and gets its support above all from the security forces.
As for the Prosecutor General’s Office, proclaimed the "state’s eye" 300 years ago, it never has been independent and is not today. Quite the contrary, as can be seen by the events of the last two years (18 months of which were under Putin), which have seen the prosecutors valiantly pursuing open opponents of the Kremlin and trying to frighten potential opponents. Also, the tradition of obtaining authorization from the top before investigating high- or even middle-ranking officials has not changed since Soviet times.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the forum “Let My People Live” on January 27, devoted to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, admitted that he was ashamed of manifestations of anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Russia.
“The German chancellor said quite recently that he is ashamed of the past, but it was the past, while we should be ashamed of nowadays, since we now often see manifestations of this ailment, even in Russia which had done more than others for the victory over fascism and for the liberation of Jews,” the Russian leader said.
Chief Russian rabbi Berl Lazar thanked the president for these words which, in his opinion, “were the response to the events of the past month, including the latest absurd statement by some deputies”. ( the Chief Rabbi also sent strong letters of condemnation to the Speaker of the Duma and the heads of the Communist and Rodina parties)
The Russian Foreign Ministry made a statement where it called the address by deputy “blatant anti-Semitism” and emphasized that it has nothing to do with the general position of the Russian leadership.
Most State Duma deputies also opposed the motion by the 19 legislators. Speaker of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov called the address to the Prosecutor-General’s Office “outrageous”. Chairman of the Duma International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev stressed in an interview with Tass that deputies intend to give a political appraisal to this “vicious anti-Semitic statement, subject to articles of the Criminal Code”.

Fair enough. Just curious...do you know who is responsible for hiring and firing the state prosecutor? It's a genuine question...I don't know.
Why don't you post about the American people who are anti-Semitic? Or those from another country?

Nope. I'm not hear to smear. I just want to expose the fact that Putin et al are neither in the interests of the US, our allies, or the Russian people. I figure the more people who shed light on this KGB-strongman, the less he will be able to get away with. That serves both US and Russian interests.
