Music Preview: Toby Keith might not be for the war, but he's behind our soldiers
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | June 30, 2005 | Ed Measley

Posted on 07/05/2005 4:21:15 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Toby Keith is tearing up the country charts this very minute with a smile-inducing sing-along that hangs its chorus on the line "I ain't as good as I once was/But I'm as good once as I ever was."

-SNIP-

"I completely supported the Afghanistan thing 100 percent," he says. "You've got a guy dealing guns and crack in your neighborhood by your kids' school, you call the police. You want 'em to go in, bust it up and get the bad guy, right? Well, when somebody flies planes into buildings, the armed forces may be the police to go do it, but you still want 'em to go get the bad guy. So all of a sudden, because of my song, which is 100 percent all about 9/11 -- it has nothing to do with the Iraq War -- I get lumped into that anyway, but that's part of the baggage you've gotta deal with. It comes with the territory."

He never supported the war in Iraq, he says, although a recent trip to Europe may have changed his mind.

This is very interesting. From a review of "1776" on Amazon:
Esteemed historian David McCullough covers the military side of the momentous year of 1776 with characteristic insight and a gripping narrative, adding new scholarship and a fresh perspective to the beginning of the American Revolution. It was a turbulent and confusing time. As British and American politicians struggled to reach a compromise, events on the ground escalated until war was inevitable. McCullough writes vividly about the dismal conditions that troops on both sides had to endure, including an unusually harsh winter, and the role that luck and the whims of the weather played in helping the colonial forces hold off the world's greatest army. He also effectively explores the importance of motivation and troop morale--a tie was as good as a win to the Americans, while anything short of overwhelming victory was disheartening to the British, who expected a swift end to the war. The redcoat retreat from Boston, for example, was particularly humiliating for the British, while the minor American victory at Trenton was magnified despite its limited strategic importance.
Have we become as the British in 1776? Ready to cut and run with every minor setback? If you are a democrat, the answer is yes it seems.

I keep hearing that "you can't say that you support the troops if you don't support their mission."

I have been saying that from day one... and I can prove it...

"...I don't agree with this war and it looks like a complete disaster"
Would also be interesting to hear some of his arguments behind these pronouncements.

This is Pgh's liberal rag newspaper. Within the past month CMT had an interview with Toby and he stated that at first he wasn't sure the war in Iraq was a good idea, but since his first trip huge progress has been made and he thinks now it was definitely needed.

He stated that there has been much improvement in the infrastructure and that the Iraqis themselves are happy to be working towards being an independent people.

This interview only gave half the information it should have.

Keith mentions he is a Conservative Democrat --- lets see that is like a Vegetarian Vampire right?

This yokel is all about money and knows how to work both sides of the street. Ask TK a real question like which end is up? Then follow it with "which end is down?" (these clowns hate trick questions).

BTW TK both of your two faces suck "The Tipsy Chicks with Dicks" have more balls than you do.

But then this is just my opinion on this phony hay seed.

"you can't say that you support the troops if you don't support their mission." Which does make sense. It's like saying "You're doing something bad but doing it well."

I disagree.

If the nation's political leadership misuses the armed forces in PC or aimless ways, it does not mean the troops are "doing something bad".

It means their civilian commanders are doing something bad, and saying so has nothing to do with the troops.

I don't care if he hasn't given a cent. He's given his time via USO shows and paid tribute to our troops with his songs.

As is so abundantly clear here on FR, it's rather easy to get folks to write a check, but to get them to actually volunteer their time for something is a completely different story.
