Did Newsweek and Dick Durbin Cause the Death of American Soldiers

Detroit, MI:Evidence suggests that Newsweek and Senator Dick Durbin contributed to the death of American soldiers in Iraq. On May 9th, Newsweek published an article that described desecration of the Qur’an by American military personnel. The Newsweek allegations were broadcast throughout the Middle East by the Al Jazeera news service. The accusations of defilement caused riots in Afghanistan that resulted in the death of fifteen people and dozens of injuries. The Newsweek story was ultimately proven to be untrue.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) followed this incident on June 14th with comments about prisoners held at the military complex at Guantanamo Bay. Speaking specifically about the practice of playing loud rap music to detainees and turning the air conditioning up in their cells, Durbin stated that “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others--that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.” Senator Durbin’s comparison of American soldiers to Russian Gulags and Nazi Germany was denounced by both Democrats and Republicans. Combat deaths of American soldiers in Iraq spiked after both of these incidents.

According to CNN, the months following the November 2004 military offensive in Fallujah saw a drop in American combat deaths. From January 2004 to the end of November, 2004, an average of 60 American soldiers per month died as a result of clashes with terrorists in Iraq. After the November Fallujah offensive, the number of combat deaths of American military personnel dropped to an average of 43 per month. This trend held from December of 2004 to April of 2005. May and June saw an increase in battle fatalities. The number jumped from the average of 43 to 69 for May and 67 in June. This increase in battlefield deaths coincides with the Newsweek story and the comments by Senator Durbin. Both incidents were covered heavily by Al Jazeera and other Middle Eastern news sources.

We could not reach Senator Durbin himself for comment, but a representative at his Washington D.C. office referred to the idea that the Congressman’s remarks had any effect on combat deaths as “ridiculous”, and called the correlation between the comments and a spike in violence a coincidence. Newsweek would neither comment on the subject nor return our calls.

Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich said of the Durbin comments being broadcast by Al Jazeera that “You cannot have a public official quoted throughout the world by our enemies describing the U.S. in these terms -- it puts every young American in uniform at risk.” Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist went a step further in his denunciation of his colleague’s words. Saying that Durbin’s statement was “anti-American and only fuels the animus of our enemies. . . .It is this type of language that they use to recruit others to be car bombers; suicide attackers; hostage takers; and full-fledged jihadists.” Criticism of Newsweek by Conservatives was equally harsh.

The opinions on this issue are divided strictly along party lines. Interpretation of the combat deaths and how they coincide with the Newsweek article and Senator Durbin’s comments will undoubtedly also be mired in partisan politics.

I pray that Durbin develops a conscience, and that it tortures him for the rest of his miserable life.

Can Durbin be charged with accessory to crime?

“You cannot have a public official quoted throughout the world by our enemies describing the U.S. in these terms -- it puts every young American in uniform at risk.”

Why is he granted a "Get out of jail card"?

Where are the headlines demanding he be brought up on charges of treason?

I think his words and the casualty numbers should be used against him by anyone who runs for his seat. Hold his feet to the fire!

Yes.......... if not yet, his words are poison to our men!

Durbin deserves a trial, and then a big oak tree and a strong rope.

Of course they did. Will they pay in any way for what in fact is accessory to murder? Heck no!

You know, there's a historical precedent for the Durbin incident. During the Civil War, Lincoln was greatly disturbed by the actions of Ohio's Clement Vallandigham, leader of the treasonous "Copperhead" faction of the democrat party.

Vallandigham's seditious rhetoric became so volatile that General Ambrose Burnside, commander of the geographical area where Vallandigham was operating, had him arrested.

Lincoln realized that prosecuting Vallandigham for treason was a no-win situation, yet he had to do something to stop Vallandigham from further hurting the Union cause and getting Union soldiers killed.

Lincoln's solution? He had Vallandigham escorted into Confederate held territory, where he could be with those who Vallandigham held in his sympathy.

I wonder how much Durbin would enjoy being escorted to the Iranian border?

Motivation for Newsweek. Sell more magazines. the more you sell the better! Content doesn't matter, checking sources to verify information doesn't matter. Just sell more issues! Motivation for Durbin. Hurt President Bush, weaken the war on terror to make him look like a failed president so the RATS can start winning some elections and take back power. The more outrageous the lies about our soldiers the better! Bottom like. These traitors are aiding and abetting our enemies. And as far as hurting our soldiers in battle and making their job more dangerous. THEY DON'T CARE!

Stupidy is a condition, not a crime. The real crime was committed by the voters of Illinois that voted this dunce into office.

To MY POST #13 . I meant to type ''bottom line''. As I was typing fast I instead wrote ''bottom like''. I will let the latter stand since'' bottom like'' is where these DemocRATS dwell anyway. Hopefully they will stay in a sewer on the bottom and never surface again!

The Democratic Leadership fear success in Iraq will mean a huge political loss for the them in the United States. They are right. The Democratic Leadership thinks failure in Iraq will bring them back to power. They are right.

The Evil BAST--Ds have made a calculated effort to give our enemy political aid. They know full well this aid in kind such as Durbin's, Kennedy's, Biden's, Byrd's and others give will increase recruitment of terrorists and decrease the moral of our troops. The Evil BAST--Ds know this will result in American Soldiers Deaths. This is plain and simple sedition. My son has done one tour of Iraq and is going back soon for his second tour. I have the right to call Durbin, Kennedy, Biden, Byrd, Pelosi, Reed and others
Evil Bast--ds. Their words, and actions give aid to the people that will try to kill my son. They are Evil Bast--ds!!!!!!!!!

I will pray every night for your precious son's safe return on his second tour of duty to Iraq! Because of him my family and children can sleep safe at night and continue living free. And he doesn't even know us. He is a true hero! I once went up to a soldier in uniform and thanked him for his service and told him how truly grateful I was! He said he appreciated my words but really didn't need the thanks , he told me the soldiers really just wanted the American peoples support. Its what kept them going and motivated. For the DemocRATS to continue to try and undermine that support for their own selfish reasons makes me shake with anger and fury!........I've tried to be like Jesus and think in my heart, '' GOD forgive them cause they know not what they do.''......But I can't, I just can't, cause I feel the Evil Bast===s know exactly what they're doing!
