Bush daughter is said to volunteer in S. Africa

CAPE TOWN -- At the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, children sit on their mothers' laps in waiting rooms, waddle down hallways, and wail inside the burn unit, where nurses carefully wrap gauze around their arms, legs, and heads.

It is here, say some doctors and nurses, that Barbara Bush, one of President Bush's twin daughters, has been working in near anonymity as a volunteer.

.....A White House official, Peter Watkins, confirmed yesterday that her mother, Laura Bush, will visit Barbara in South Africa later this week, ... The official said Laura Bush and her other daughter, Jenna, will spend five days with Barbara and then will travel to other African countries to speak about AIDS relief and education initiatives.

...Both mother and daughter apparently were deeply touched two years ago when they visited a pediatric AIDS unit in Botswana run by Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After the visit, which was part of President Bush's six-day swing through Africa, Laura Bush said, ''My message is there is hope for children all over the world who suffer from AIDS and other diseases as well, that they are really surrounded by love."

....''When she visited the center in Botswana, she told me she was interested in international health and pediatric AIDS," Dr. Mark Kline, professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, said yesterday. ''She said, 'I just love to do this work.' . . . She called me and said she was interested and we talked about what she might do with the program," but nothing happened.

No one at the Red Cross hospital would discuss how Barbara Bush ended up helping there, or what she is doing each day.

Typical Bush - doing what's right in a humble fashion instead of going for a blaring, chest-thumping photo-op while actually doing nothing.

Interesting how the MSM would let her deeds go unnoticed though; if it was a Dim's kid, they would be all over it like stink on a Dim.

Yes, and now she'll likely have to move elsewhere or become a security nightmare.

It actually sounds like she is trying not to be noticed.

I hope there are adequate security provisions. Given the reports on crime levels in SA, one would think that her decision might be suboptimal.

Yep. BAD article, IMO. Nice to shine some light on positive behavior, but giving away her location is the height of stupidity, not that I expect much more from a 'journalist'.

Well, the LeftStream Media is the intelligence arm of the terrorists, and these news stories are their field reports.

Your comment recalled a brief flash of Clinton, walking into Sunday services with a five pound Bible in his hand for the photo-op.

The cost of the security for her trip certainly outweighs any good her choice of a cause and location may have done.

I would imagine she has the very best secret service coverage. I would imagine that in that situation, it would be voluntary because the work would be exceptionally tough.

God bless these men and women who look over her and keep her safe, and God bless Barbara for her good heart.

I disagree. Her involvement will bring a bright PR spotlight on this need.

On an unrelated note, where can I sign up to volunteer in South Africa?

So, I guess, she just sits in the White House so some can claim that she is sponging off the government and is a lazy no-good.

sometimes I wonder if people who post here stop and think before doing it. So there is a security cost. If she is able to help and our media has created a situation where there is no private life for the daughter of a President, is she to stop helping people because of the cost? If she helps and at sometime in the future is able to lead a discussion about African needs - because she was there, then the left can't cry that Republicans don't care. There is no down side to her help to these poor people.
