Prom offers gays night out
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | 7/11/05 | Trisha L. Howard

Tim Hart and James Lasadose skipped their senior proms this spring because they couldn't take each other. They made up for the missed experience Saturday night at "Out in the City," St. Louis' first prom for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people and their straight friends. Hart and Lasadose, both 18, wore matching Renaissance-style black shirts and buttons declaring, "I am loved."

"My favorite part was just actually being able to be with my boyfriend," Hart said later. "Not all the time can you be in a large room with a lot of people, and be with the person you want to be with. We got to hold hands without looking over our shoulders."

More than 150 young people from Missouri and Illinois turned out for Saturday's event, held at City Museum. They came in shorts, jeans, tuxedos, miniskirts, floor-length gowns. They posed for prom pictures, sat at tables bedecked with purple and silver stars, sipped faux cocktails, shared a "gender-free" restroom. They danced in groups, or in pairs. And they reveled in a common refrain: It feels good to be me.

Tiffany "Tip" Franklin, 21, had attended her own senior prom by herself, clad in jeans and a T-shirt "so I wouldn't stand out too much."

On Saturday night, she wore what made her comfortable: a dark dress shirt and pants, a tie, a gold chain. Her girlfriend of six months wore a sleek black dress.

"I get a chance to dress like myself," Franklin said.

In a 2003 survey, more than a third of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people said they would be uncomfortable attending a school dance with a same-sex date, according to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

"I get a chance to dress like myself," Franklin said.

Hmmm, you mean he doesn't dress like himself every day???

I guess the good news is that there were only 150 of them for a two state area.

From the caption for the picture that accompnies the article:

Scott Whipple, 23, of Granite City, and Scott Hopke, 21, of South Roxana, are two of the first to hit the dance floor Saturday at a prom at City Museum.

Now, I have assumed that this is a "high school" prom, the article does not specify. But my comment would be:

What kind of a 23 year old attends a high school prom?

What is it with that stupid term?! I have no idea what grammar has to do with perversion. Is this supposed to refer transvestites?

Frankly, I don't care what these young people did or do, if it 's not in my face. At one of the proms at our local high school a group of wierdos crashed it, wearing tuxedo pants, suspenders and no shirts and then cut in on the couples dancing and danced with the male. This is much preferable. Let them be.

Here's a twisted tune for that event: http://www.bobrivers.com/audiovault/tunes/tunes.asp?Var=B&Page=2

It's the first song listed.

Re. your tagline ... that was a great scene, but Rommel actually wrote "Infantry Tactics," about his WW1 experience, while Heinz Guderian wrote "Achtung Panzer!"
