SCANDAL IMPLOSION (Rove/Cooper/Wilson)
NY Post ^ | July 12, 2005 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 07/11/2005 11:18:25 PM PDT by Howlin

I WROTE a column on Oct. 10, 2003, about the strange case of Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame.

--

...I offered my speculation of what an administration official might have said to a journalist to explain just how Wilson — a Clinton administration official — got the assignment in the first place: "Administration official: 'We didn't send him there. Cheney's office asked CIA to get more information. CIA picked Wilson . . . Look, I hear his wife's in the CIA. He's got nothing to do. She wanted to throw him a bone.' "

Hate to say I told you so, but . . .

--

There's no mistaking the purpose of this conversation between Cooper and Rove. It wasn't intended to discredit, defame or injure Wilson's wife. It was intended to throw cold water on the import, seriousness and supposedly high level of Wilson's findings.

While some may differ on the fairness of discrediting Joseph Wilson, it sure isn't any kind of crime.

--

So if the offense wasn't against Plame, what of the offense against Wilson? There was no offense. As many of Joe Wilson's own hottest defenders would no doubt argue in relation to President Bush, exposing a liar is not only not a crime, it's a public service.

And Wilson lied. Repeatedly.

--

What isn't controversial is this: Karl Rove didn't "out" Valerie Plame as a CIA agent to intimidate Joe Wilson. He was dismissing Joe Wilson as a low-level has-been hack to whom nobody should pay attention. He was right then, and if he said it today, he'd still be right.

And if Valerie wants to live a quiet spy life, she should stop having her picture taken by society photographers and stop getting stories written about her on the front page of the Times.

I don't know about David Gregory because I don't remember hearing him but Terry Moran (ABC)was having a hissy fit. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He was so disrespectful it was sickening. He acted as if he was a child talking back to his parents.

Well, if the MSM is cheesed now, can't wait to see what they'll do when the real leaker's identity is revealed.

Bwah hah hah hah....

I have one word for the MSM: Suckers!!

I need to NEVER go to bed early! I always miss the good stories!

I actually think that the important thing is Plame's interference in the activities of the CIA in order to get her husband (unemployed) a trip with expences covered, a trip whose findings he LIED about for partisan purposes.

This whole thing has been fishy from the get-go. If Rove wanted to retaliate against Wilson, there were far better ways to do so, none of which involved Plame.

Plus, my man the I-Man is being sued by a disgruntled doctor. Imus laid it all out a few minutes ago and he's not taking it lying down.

That's probably right. Wilson just wanted a free trip where he could act like a real diplomat. If Rove had done anything wrong, the left side of the media would already have the goods. They're going to get embarrassed.

Isn't Mandy Grunewald, Hillary's close friend and former employee at the White House, married to Matt Cooper? He probably learned Plame's name from his own wife. It would not surprise me if Valerie and Mandy were also friends, or share a gym, or a preschool, or salon, etc in DC.

But Rove's committed a classic case of treason - deliberately outing a secret operative for base political motives

Where did you read this claptrap?

Yikes. For someone who claims to be a working journalist, you sure seem to have a problem with objectivity.

Where does Podheretz go wrong, in your opinion, in his recap of the facts?

You are quite correct. And I wouldn't be surprised at all if Grunwald was the source of the leak. What you said makes perfect sense. Mandy had a new baby (frightening thought) and Plame had 5-year old twins. It would be perfectly reasonable for Plame to have called Grunwald offering advice on nannies, pre-schools, pediatricians, etc. In fact, knowing the Plame/Wilson duo, it seems to me quite likely, given that they were all about moving in the Rat social circles.

I wondered why ol' Valerie donated as Ms Valerie E Wilson in 1999 (your post #66), and then your answered the question in this post. Wow! Talk about connecting the dots!

Great work!!

Yes, Porter Goss. Former congressman on the intel committee, and before that a CIA operative himself. He understands the culture and the mid-management, and I think is doing a swell job.

There are two parts of this puzzle that continue to bother me:

1. Why would Miller sit in jail for Rove or any Republican?
2. Why would the special prosecutor continue the investigation if he could find no law broken? If it were me, I would shut the investigation down as soon as I hit a terminal dead end, write a report and get back to making big lawyer bucks.

Can't we all just picture all the "good will" Amb Wilson won for the USA during his career!!! 22 years representing America with his snobbish manner. He makes me sick!

He can't tell you his source, he's a journalist. They don't need identifiable (or credible) sources.

No kidding! I can see the government representatives of several African countries rolling their eyes and talking behind his back at what a jerk he is.

And here is another thing I noticed: how come he kept saying "sweet mint tea?" MOST people would have just said "tea." I know this is trivial, but it has really bugged me since the start of this thing.
