Time's Matthew Cooper Expected to Testify
Las Vegas Sun (AP) ^ | July 13, 2005 | Pete Yost

Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, a key figure in the Karl Rove controversy, showed up at U.S. District Court on Wednesday. The grand jury investigating the leak was meeting, and it was expected Cooper would testify. He did not comment while entering the courthouse.

Meanwhile, President Bush and first lady Laura Bush are standing by Rove, whose role in the leak of an undercover CIA officer's identity has prompted Democrats to call for dismissal of the president's top political adviser.

Cooper wrote an article in 2003 in which he identified the officer as Valerie Plame. It was disclosed this week that the story ran after a July 11, 2003, conversation with Rove during which the political adviser discussed Plame but not by name.

Cooper had refused to reveal his source for the story but agreed to do so after a confidentiality agreement was waived. That came just before Cooper could have been sent to jail for not cooperating with the investigation into who in the Bush administration leaked her name and whether that constituted a crime

I like this article, it gives a succinct timeline of events for those of us who need reminders, and for those who are just now getting interested in this.

Is this Matt Cooper the same person someone on another thread referred to as "Time's Cooper"? If so, he is married to Mandy Gruenwald, one of Hillary's most loyal and most vicious minions!

And I like Laura Bush's reply to a reporter: "Mrs. Bush, talking to reporters while traveling in Africa on Wednesday, called Rove "a very good friend" whom the Bushes have known for many years.

"It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on any of it," she said, "so I think I'll leave the speculation to you all and I'll leave the investigation" to the prosecutor. "

Maybe she learned a good lesson after the media so twisted her response to a question about a female appointee to the Supreme Court.

The press is going to stay on this until Rove pays somehow regardless of whether there's really anything there or not.

Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Speculation is right!

a key figure in the Karl Rove controversy...

It would be revealing indeed to see a Nexis/Lexis comparison of the number of MSM articles written with these fields:

Berger + classified
vs.
Rove + Plame

The media is all over the Rove story and what I want to know is how did Michael Isakoff get Cooper's email? After all of the hot air devoted to protecting sources, where is the analysis of Time turning docs over to the court and them leaking an email to Newsweek. Meanwhile Cooper was shown emotional about being released by his source. As you guys say, Barf alert. I did not know about Mandy Grunwald. So, maybe this whole story is still just democratic politicos out to embarass Bush.

This is incorrect. Rove waived that agreement 18 months ago.

No, this not just another story. The criminality involved here is far more treasonous and vindictive than Watergate ever was. Rove and the other involved in the latest BushCo episode don't have a "third rate burglary" defense to rescue them. Have you noticed that Scott McClellan's defense is only to wait until the prosecutor acts? Scott doesn't even try to explain his and Dubya's prior inconsistent statements to the press.

BTW, here's a link to an earlier article that helps to understand what's fact and what is fiction. Noticeably, the CIA says they wouldn't offer a referral unlesss Mrs. Wilson was a covert agent at the time of the crimes by Rove and others in the BushMafia.

I never watch Dan Abrams, but last night Victoria T. (can't spell last name) was on with a couple of libs. She wrote the law concerning outing CIA people. Abrams and the libs were trying to say that she did not know what the law said.

Seemed weird to me that they would know more than the author.

Keep peddling the lie that Valerie was "undercover CIA". She was not. She worked at Langley and her name was listed online on her husband's web site bio. How "undercover" is that? I guess the lamestream media believes if they keep pushing the lie, the sheeple will believe it.

I hope that there is a sarcasm note missing to your post, or I am just reading it wrong, if not you are crazier than a bed bug. There has been no crime committed stated by the former federal prosecutor that wrote the laws concerning the outing of agents. It had been 9 years since the agent was out in the field, 4 more than is necessary to not be identified.

There is NOTHING to this. Plame was never covert and therefore never outed. You have to be posted overseas for that kind of work. In fact, information that she worked for the CIA was readily available on her husband's website as well as other sources. Andrea Mitchell openly admitted that everyone in the press corp knew Plame worked for the CIA.

Rove will be exonerated.

However, misuse of public funds and libel charges should immediately be field against Wilson and Plame.
