Dick Morris, former chief political strategist for Bill Clinton, says President George W. Bush must count on Justice William Rehnquist to quickly retire from The U.S. Supreme Court.
Morris thinks Bush will have to appoint an "extreme right-winger" to replace Sandra Day O'Connor, and thus appease his base. However, if Rehnquist retires, Morris believes that Bush must then appoint a "moderate" to "balance out" the Court. Otherwise, Morris believes, angry voters will elect Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next President of the United States in 2008.
In the first place, why is it that Dick Morris, Teddy Kennedy, Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean, and John Kerry are never pressed by the media to identify the members of "the extreme right-wing" of the Republican Party ? These liberals throw this term around daily, yet no one in the press corps is ever inquisitive enough to make them attach names to this sinister group of "extreme right wingers".
If the Republicans were constantly attacking the extreme left-wingers in the Democratic Party, you can bet that the news media would demand identification of these individuals. It's very frustrating that even the conservative media doesn't take a hard stand on this.
But, beyond that, why does George W. Bush have to name a "moderate" to "balance out" the Court? Bill Clinton was never challenged by the media when he named two extremely liberal judges to the Supreme Court.
I hope President Bush will listen to his friends, and ignore his enemies. He must name only constitutional conservatives to the U.S. Supreme Court. After all, that was his firm promise to voters in the last two elections.
The voters of this country will never be that angry ... Hildabeast will never set foot in our Nation's WH as President. Won't happen ... ever.
Morris better check what he's smoking ... he isn't in touch with reality.
Morris needs a real job.
Morris was right once. This time he's wrong. Judges should be chosen by who believe in the Constitution; they shouldn't be focus grouped.
Perhaps, but he sure gets a lot of ink and airtime here.
I sure hope that the "we have to keep the balance on the Court" crowd looses this one - big time!
I'd prefer to see Rehnquist retire in time to allow Bush to name a replacement.
By "Right Wing", he means "Correct Wing".
Does that make him Ivory Dope?
The same Dick Morris who insisted Bush better get us out of Iraq before the election or he will lose ... that Dick Morris?
Dick Morris is a pinhead.
Amen!!!!!!!!!!I hope the White House reads this.
I don't see it this way at all. My observation is that Conservatives, as a rule, care far more about SC appointments than democrats.
Dobsons been having whole radio shows about this for years. And remember the Sunday night thing a few months ago where everyone went to church and watched videos about taking back the courts?
The core liberals care about this, but the average Demo this goes right over their heads.
Too clever!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd nominate Ralph Reed and Randall Terry.
See doc30's post in #17. The tacit assumption of Morris' prediction is that Mr. Bush is not really a conservative, but pays lip service only to conservative values. There are solid rebuttals to this, but overall, I agree with doc30 and that assumption. We could each go down our respective lists of conservative versus non-conservative, but it would serve no purpose, other than an argument.
To answer your question, I would ask you one: why would Bush want to put a moderate in the AG position?
he's not right or wrong on this, he's just making an observation about what Bush might do - and it may well come true. He could toss Luttig up there for Rehnquist, and a moderate for OConnor. It could happen. I don't like it, but it could happen.
We should hope that Rehnquist remains on the SCOTUS for as long as possible but retire in time for Bush to name a replacement. That's what I meant.
I was reading a thread here yesterday or the day before where it seemed that some FReepers were clamoring for Rehnquist to go right now. That makes no sense to me because his decisions on legal matters are what matter and his decisions are excellent.
The left is perpetually angry and bitter and it doesn't matter what Bush does, they still will be - go for the real thing in both cases.
