ACLU pushes state on Quran oaths

GREENSBORO — The ACLU of North Carolina on Monday accused state court officials of not responding quickly enough to a controversy involving the use of the Quran for courtroom oaths.

The group’s legal foundation is calling on the state Administrative Office of the Courts to adopt a policy allowing the Quran and other religious texts for oath-taking in North Carolina courtrooms.

A Greensboro Muslim group has been waiting for an AOC decision for three weeks after Guilford County’s two top judges decided that Muslims could not legally take an oath on the Quran.

“We think they are dragging their feet,” said Jennifer Rudinger, the state ACLU’s executive director.

Her group, along with a Washington-based Islamic civil rights organization and Greensboro-area religious leaders, has called on the AOC to act. The ACLU wrote a formal letter to the state agency June 28 but has received no word back.

An AOC spokesman on Monday denied that the agency was dawdling. Dick Ellis said a judicial conference last month and vacation schedules have kept key decision-makers from working on the issue.

“Nobody has had time to do that around here,” he said.

Informally, Ellis said, most of the agency’s lawyers feel the issue should be resolved by legislators.

What's so upsetting about the ACLU insisting that witnesses be sworn in while standing on the Koran with their hand on the Bible?

"The ACLU won't stop until Christianity is destroyed."

The power they seek to destroy is vastly superior to any they could possibly muster. They are doomed to failure...

The time has long come and gone for thie members of this anti-American, anti-Christian, paedophile-promoting, pro-criminal conspiracy of effete liberal demagogic barristers to be rounded up, put in a ship and sunk in the middle of the Ocean.

We need a law barring the ACLU or any of its members or agents from ever initiating a lawsuit in any courtroom in America.

What I want to know is what in heaven's name is going on in North Carolina? Two of the London terrorists either lived in or went to school in N. Carolina. Other terrorists have had ties to N. Carolina. Has N. Carolina become a muslim state recently?

By supporting a new bill recently introduced, you can help cut off taxpayer support of the ACLU:

Public Expression of Religion Act of 2005

Information here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1413875/posts

There you will find information about the bill, links to contact your congressmen and state representatives, and links to Stop the ACLU, among others.

Will muslims be permitted to lie to non-muslims in court as per their religious tradition?

I'm waiting for the legal ruling on THAT on.

So how would it work if I, as a non-mulsim, insisted on putting my hand on a koran to be sworn in? I understand the muslims object when an infidel even touches the koran. How would the courts resolve such an issue? Obviously I have a right to demand a koran if I am to be sworn in and at the same time, to do so, would make the state complicit in an act of desecration.

This could be fun.

" The ACLU DO want all religious symbols out of the court. They are pushing this kind of thing so Christians and others will fight it, and thus the courts will ultimately be forced to keep ALL religious materials out of the courts."

The AChaosLU, the true anarchists within our borders. The Secularist slobs running the aclu think they can divide and conquer America, they have another thing coming.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

Well, what do you all think? Anything the ACLU supports is 99% of the time a very bad thing. I think this is one of the bad things. Anyway, supposedly Muslims (at least according to the Koran, of which I have read some) revere all the prophets of the OT and Jesus Christ and Mary. According to the Koran, certainly not in practice. So Muslims should be perfectly happy with Bibles.

And if they don't like taking oaths on the Bible, just let them do the generic oathing.

The ACLU's engines only work because of all of OUR tax money they receive, basically they're a "protection" racket like the Mafia. Only much, much more dangerous - they're not just after money, they're after the destruction of everything that makes human civilization human and civilized. If you don't know about this, please read Jay's links.

Freepmail me if you want on/off this pinglist.

Yes, the Quran says it is okay to lie or murder people in behalf of Islam, so what is the point in this?

Anti Christ Liars United only want the Christian bible out of America...

Given the Koran gives the go ahead to lying to infidels in order to further the cause of Islam...doesn't make much sense to bother to have Muslims swear to 'tell the the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth'.. on one.. so help them Allah...

Not that it should matter to atheists at all.. what they swear to... on a book.. that to them is fiction.. or to a God... that to them... does not even exist..

One Nation Under God (The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and His Son...Jesus Christ that is)

One big problem that a Muslim defendant might run in to if he insists on swearing on the Koran: The prosecutor could destroy the testimony by walking over to that Koran that the defendant swore on, open it up to the part that commands Muslims to lie to the infidel and read that to the jury, and then calmly ask the defendant, "Did you betray the Koran by saying anything truthful in this court full of infidels today?"...the answer would be interesting.

can you cite any examples of Christian sects today who believe that swearing an oath is 'taking the Lord's name in vain'?

There are the J Witnesses. Not sure just how normative Christian they are, but they don't take oaths.
