OK, folks I did a little site seeing, check out the local color and there is much and frankly there are pictures I will return to take but I did go with really one mission to check on the residences of the "listed" sex offenders in the 5 minute radius. Let me say, we have an elementary school and 3 parks in that area ... actually within 2 miles. There are 41 on the list, some did not have a residence listed.

To my horror there were homes listed that were not LISTED on the street, nothing, no house, no apartment NOTHING . Others were in less than a block of the school. I kid you not.

Have to tell you one, is living with a front porch view of the penitentiary if that doesn't beat all. The more I drove, took photo's looked at the parks and the school's the more upset I became.

I sent out an eye opening email about the number's in my friends neighborhoods and I have enjoyed the replies, but I must say, and please take this in the "loving" way I mean this, get OUT and do the same. If not you than who. If you say you care for your grand kids and that is enough, please do not get into that rut. This is NOT just about your grand kids it is also about the safety of you neighborhood. The word accident really means little if we do not try to prevent future accidents. I mean, that a child in it's most purest state is a child that loves to wonder, investigate to live amongst the world and not under your nose 24/7. I am not trying to make any of my good friends feel bad, to nag my good friends but really to open your eyes to my findings and to ask yourself, "What can I do, to set a positive example not only for my grand kids, but for my children and for those I live among?"

I am horrified of my findings today. As I went on to Ft Leavenworth, I asked one of the gate guards who now works for a private company and no longer works for the city of Leavenworth. I asked about the laws of sex offender's and their residence near a school or park. He said that they are allowed to live there, but must notifiy the neighborhood and school's and parks. AHEM, what the hell is that about.

Most of the houses removed their house number, several were ghost houses and for other's kids everywhere, playing in their pools, playing in the parks, playing at the school parks and riding their skate boards and bikes.

WOW, I just had to stop my car and take a breath. So, I documented my afternoon with photo's and took along a tape recorder as I looked for each home. I did not finish the entire list it is not as easy as it looks on paper.

I will call the police station during business hours to ask of the law's of sex offender's and their residences while on probation.

Folks, the idea that the following were in walking distance of a school and park ATTEMPTED AGGRAVATED CRIMINAL SODOMY, RAPE/CHILD, Aggravated Indecent Solicitation of a Child, STATUTORY RAPE 2ND DEGREE and ATTEMPTED VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER . If this does not scare you into action I do not know what will.

The time was yesterday to take action.

I suppose I have become frustrated with all the proactive folks that do a lot of talking but do they actually do anything about it. Such the opportunity to go on line and see who the offender's are in their neighborhoods. If we were good neighbors we would know who may be without a computer in our neighborhoods and give a list to those who we live near and again this can be accessed at the local libraries and if there is some type of software preventing those in the area from accessing than put a computer in a room that can be seen by the staff with a door and only allow those over 21 or 18 to use it.

I do not advocate taking the law into one's hands. I do feel that it is important to know who your neighbors are or who might be visiting, which is much more difficult to investigate but if a neighborhood bands together they can do a great deal for the children in their neighborhood.

I suppose I felt strongly that someone who has been convicted and does their time and finishes probation should be allowed to move amongst as any felon who has completed their sentence but after this past year I have no more compassion (UNLESS IT IS A HIGHSCHOOL BOY DATING HIS HIGHSCHOOL SWEETHEART -- THIS DOES NOT FIT WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT) they are repeat offender's and frankly I would no longer trust one as far I could toss one.

They do have a repeat factor and I just would not trust him/her. I have been prayerful of my feelings because I have been so disgusted and sad over the year's past crime's against our children. I have become physically ill, but, now I suppose I have wrestled with my frustration and there is just no place in society for those who perpetrate crimes against or most valued and precious resource, our children. We must as a society come to their aide. If we do not, we have nobody to blame but ourselves.

Frankly, I like the Washington State (if I am wrong please corrent the state) way of handling sex offenders. They serve their sentence and then when time to be released they go before a board and I am sure they are medical professionals and lawyer's and police and take an assessment and decide if they can be reintroduced into society. If they cannot, they are moved to another facility, a long term facility that is designed to house the sex animal for an unspecified time.

I hate that I would have feed, clothe, provide medical care .. but the alternative well I will suck up the cost of these animals although I wish there were a way to make they serve a sentence that is kind of like the bio dome where they must be self reliant. Oh I could go on but I feel like I need a shower of my disgust.

Thank you, I actually felt I might have been to wordy in my vanity, but really it is difficult to bring this to 100 words or less. So, thank you for reading the thread.

I tell you, I was heart broken as I saw the those offender's living so close. I want to hope the good in people the rehabilitating of our offender's but they do not see to respond to rehabilitation and frankly prison has chosen to not pursue the rehab area of incarceration. But these folks who have committed crimes against our children well they warrant a institution for just them and to remain for the rest of their earthly life.

Thanks for caring this much. Your attitude and work must and should be contagious with all parents and grandparents.I check my local registry regularly and within my small zip code - I have noticed unfamiliar street addresses. School will start soon and I will do the same as you - locate these addresses and if I can't - will go to my LE and check it out.
We just cannot let apathy rule us on this matter. I am so angry. Children stolen from their own homes, their own beds. When will the copy-cats begin killing parents to get at their children?

It has been a draining day, so if my facts are wrong, feel free to correct me.

Can a judge incarcerate based on words and thoughts. Do not get me wrong, I say toss them in prison and melt the key.

One thing that is apparent those that say they will re offend do in fact re offend. Do a study do what ever is required to than say this scientifically sound and then keep them incarcerated, not a tough concept.

What I saw today in our zip code is unacceptable.

Oddly enough, I recall the Michael Jackson case, and the coverage mentioned if he were to be convicted he would NOT be allowed to return to Neverland because of the proximity of a school.

just wanted to say thank you for your kind words.

Not sure what "incident" pushed me over the edge to take the time to go to the site and print out the names. I knew I would not publicly do anything but wanted to see if the addresses were accurate and the locations of the sex offenders.

The idea that they can reside so close to a school is haunting. I saw kids everywhere. I saw some adults sitting on their porch. I wanted to stop and ask them if they were aware of who their neighbor was but did not want to put myself in what might end up being an unpleasant situation. Perhaps when my beloved returns I will actually make contact.

I am however, going to make copies of all the paperwork I used today, after confirming with the police, and then give it to my neighbors. It is at least a first step, perhaps a neighborhood watch.

Will also ask the schools what the policy is because more times than not sex offender's watch their prey and what better super market for them then a park or school. Some can sit from their porch and see the school. OK, gonna take a deep breath.

I am so glad that maybe my words my put the fire in other's to at least check out their sites.

But, frankly I wouldn't expect anything less from my fellow Freeper's!

Excellent comment, WKB. You might consider putting it on a thread all on it's own, perhaps breaking but at least frontpage. That way you get the info our faster and to a bigger audience. Perhaps we can ask Jim to see if there were a way to run a banner or something when an Amber Alert is issued, time is of the essence in these event's.

We're up to our eyeballs here too. Check out the Colorado site and pay special attention to how most of the offenders are classified. It's a real eye opener.

Hey FMC, that was good methodology (researching and taking photos), excellent! As I now do some of this stuff as a PI, that's a good first effort in building a database or references on these monsters. If your photos are from a public place (public street, etc.) no sweat. Try and get some clear shots of any vehicles at those residences also--with readable LPs. You never know how that information may be needed--hopefully not!

We are not aggressive enough about our communities, have you introduced yourself to some trustworthy officers in you area? Get to know them and express your concerns so that they'll know who they are dealing with and if by chance you need their help, I think they'll be more amenable to putting forth some effort.

One thing - If some are bogus addresses (empty lots), then how can we assume that the legit addresses really are the offenders in question. People move or that no background check of the current homeowner.

For the ones who really want to know, try pretexting the homeowner. Check for vehicle license plates and get the name from the State or PI. Check for names on mail or newspaper. Try reverse directory for a phone number and call and ask for the person in question. Deliver a package to the person in question that needs to sign for.
