Is being generous good for business? Costco CEO profits as he offers top pay, benefits
Houston Chronicle ^ | July 16, 2005 | Steven Greenhouse

ISSAQUAH, WASH. - Jim Sinegal, the chief executive of Costco Wholesale, the nation's fifth-largest retailer, crows about Costco's private-label pinpoint cotton dress shirts.

"Look, these are just $12.99," he said while lifting a crisp blue button-down inside Costco's cavernous warehouse store here in the company's hometown. "At Nordstrom or Macy's, this is a $45, $50 shirt."

Combining high quality with stunningly low prices, the shirts appeal to upscale customers — and epitomize why some retail analysts say Sinegal just might be America's shrewdest merchant since Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart.

Note to Wal-Mart. You don't have to screw over your people to make a buck.

The bulk food deal makes me have to eat like a horse before the stuff spoils. I usually buy food at the local grocery store.

Yeah, but for stuff like soda and paper towels, stuff that lasts forever, they're a godsend.

the Ralph Lauren shirt you buy at Costco, is not the same Ralph Lauren shirt you buy at Ralph Lauren, or at Nordstrom. Sure, its got the same brand name label, but its a lower quality product designed for a store like costco.

Costco and WalMart do an entirely different kind of business. Costco only sells stuff that they can get at a huge discount. They don't carry everything, and the products they offer come and go. They don't have to operate on a tiny margin like full-service grocers -- including Wal Mart -- have to do.

that's true.

and their essentially lifetime warranty on things like electronics, plasma TVs - you can't get that anywhere else. although I suspect as they did with returns on PCs, they will be changing that policy soon.

Yeah, but Sam's Club operates pretty much the same way Wal-Mart does. And I don't believe that Costco is pulling in bigger profits than Wally World, no matter what their margin is.

Note to Wal-Mart. You don't have to screw over your people to make a buck.

Note to Ace. You don't have to be a union goon all your life.

I know a retired grocery business guy who walked into Costco for the first time and said, "I wish I had stock in this company." /profound wisdom.../sarcasm.

It's great that he has been able to make his business model successful. He's also entitled to donate to whomever he wishes. Last time I looked we're allowed to do that in this country. I, for one, found the inbterview very interesting.

Costco has repeatedly had local governments use eminent domain laws to acquire other private property so it can build a Costco store. In California, they convinced a town to remove a Church to build a Costco since it would generate more property tax...

Laundry soap. Spray-n-Wash.

I have 3 boys.

But I shop at Sam's for that stuff. No Costco's except in ATL.

I just moved to Bullhead City, AZ from San Diego. Before I moved here I didn't like the mention of the name Walmart. But let me tell you, here in BHC, it's the only place to go. I love it. I know the arguments against it, but it makes our lives so much easier.
